Nice color page with Yue and Kerberus we got there… they both look very different, very contemporary CLAMP art style. Kerberus’ eyes look kinder/less fierce and Yue looks like he came out of GATE 7.
So the mysterious cloaked figure is riding and commanding the snakey thing that we saw at the end of last chapter, as if the cloaked figure were its master, hummm. Sakura is drawn to it/them, or rather, the new key seems to be attracted to both the creature and the mysterious figure, bringing Sakura closer to them. The mysterious figure’s clothes match the key so it definitely seems like the mysterious figure is the master of that key.
Sakura then wakes up and we found out that she was having a dream within a dream (very XXXHOLiC, very CLAMP, very Ohkawa).
Am I the only one who thinks Kero looks weird? I noticed this last chapter but I decided to wait a bit longer. He definitely looks weird. He looks ok on color pages, though. Did Nekoi lost her touch in drawing him?
The new key materializes itself from the dream world to the real world. We learned from XXXHOLiC that if one holds on an item within a dream, one can retrieve same item to the real world.
Sakura is worried at breakfast and Fujitaka obviously notices it and that reminds him of the fact that he hasn’t seen Nadeshiko as of lately, and he wonders if that’s a good or a bad sign… I had to remind myself that Fujitaka is now able to see Nadeshiko, I completely forgot about that.
On her way to school, Sakura is surprised by an unusual gush of wind. She can’t use her cards since they have lost their magic powers so instead, the new key turns itself into a beautiful new staff (slightly worried with the amount of CG used in this scene).
Sakura realizes by herself that using the usual incantation won’t work with this staff so she come up with a new one by herself (suspicious). That also goes to show she is more powerful than ever now.
The new incantation works and Sakura seals, or rather, secures the gush of wind, which turns out to be a new card called GALE! What’s up with all the fragments? Is the same ones from Sakura’s dream…
The new card design is so beautiful with its transparent factor. This must be a challenge to draw and soon animate it and manufacture it (if they ever plan on releasing them). The design of the card itself is very similar to Clow and Sakura’s — same magic symbols, 4 elements and the sun, the moon and stars. Only the design of the card’s identity looks completely different. While Clow and Sakura’s card have human appearance, this new card seems to have the appearance of entity. The little mechanic wings and gears remind me of CLOVER =)
“Gale” is a synonym for “wind” and surely that was intentional? Are we going to deal with counterparts of Clow and Sakura’s cards? Also, notice how it’s just “GALE” and not “THE GALE” like it is with Clow and Sakura’s cards.
Tomoyo freaks out that she wasn’t able to record Sakura capturing/securing the card, but for a sec there, Syaoran looks slightly alarmed that Tomoyo might have figured something out. That goes to show just how Syaoran knows a lot more of what’s going on than he says he does.
Did anybody else notice that the outfit Tomoyo made for Sakura is the same one from the promotional illustration for the Clear Card arc? 🙂
So Sakura and Syaoran can only sense Sakura’s powers coming from the card and the key, hummm… either the sorcerer who made them is disguising their powers really well, or……………. Sakura herself made them.
Then, we found out that Eriol was avoiding Sakura just like we thought. He calls Syaoran (!) and he fills Eriol in concerning the latest developments. Syaoran then says he knows what he has to do… he looks so sad when he says that =(
Before I finish this, I just want to say that I slightly uncomfortable with the thickness of the lines here. Sometimes they look too thick for CCS, almost not looking like CCS. Sometimes everything looks the same and there is no contrast between background and foreground and characters. See page 28 where we get to see GALE full frontal, it looks rather messy with the magic symbol in the back and Sakura and Kero in the front, you can’t really distinguish what is what. Maybe I’ll get used to it, or maybe it’ll look better on print — it always does.
Another set of 34 pages this time. 107 pages so far for volume 1, which means we are slightly over half of it. Next chapter will be next month.
