The covers of XXXHOLiC #7 and #8 for the CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION edition have been announced!

They will be released on November 5. They can be ordered via Amazon Japan (volume 7, volume 8).

This time we got pretty vibrant colors as backgrounds.

My predictions were right! But then again, it wasn’t hard to guess at all…

I think Yuuko is looking more like her classic self on the cover of volume 7. On the cover of volume 8, she is looking a bit younger again ^^” Also, isn’t it the first time we see the Spider Lady colored by CLAMP?

My predictions for volumes 9 and 10 are Haruka and Kohane, although I would love to see Neko Musume in color for the first time (but I don’t know if she is popular/important enough for that).

Here’s the upcoming release schedule for XXXHOLiC:

December 2021: volumes 9 & 10
January 2022: volumes 11 & 12
February 2022: volumes 13 & 14
March 2022: volumes 15 & 16
April 2022: volumes 17 & 18
May 2022: volume 19 & ?

The covers of XXXHOLiC #5 and #6 for the CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION edition have been announced!

They will be released on October 6. They can be ordered via Amazon Japan (volume 5, volume 6).

Both very pretty! I am loving that Yuuko is looking more and more like her usual self.

This time, we got Mokona with Yuuko on the cover of volume 5 and Zashiki Warashi on the cover of volume 6. It seems like the pattern for these covers will be Yuuko with another character (until it becomes Watanuki with another character, later down the story). My bet for volume 7 is Spider Lady and volume 8 Ame Warashi, but it could be the other way around as well.

Here’s the upcoming release schedule for XXXHOLiC:

November 2021: volumes 7 & 8
December 2021: volumes 9 & 10
January 2022: volumes 11 & 12
February 2022: volumes 13 & 14
March 2022: volumes 15 & 16
April 2022: volumes 17 & 18
May 2022: volume 19 & ?

The covers of XXXHOLiC #3 and #4 for the CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION edition have been announced!

They will be released on September 6. They can be ordered via Amazon Japan (volume 3, volume 4).

I don’t know if I should say “improvement”, but Yuuko is definitely looking more like herself in these two covers.

Good to know that this is a departure from the traditional Yuuko & Watanuki covers to allow room for other characters.

I love the detail in volume 3 where the smoke seems to come out of Yuuko’s kimono’s belt and turns into Doumeki’s bow.

UPDATE: The belts attached to volumes 3 and 4 reveal that volumes 5 and 6 will be released simultaneously on October 6.

Tokyo Babylon CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION scheduled for summer 2022 in Japan; CLAMP release official statement

The official twitter account of Kadokawa‘s Young Ace magazine announced today that the CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION version of Tokyo Babylon is scheduled to be released on the Japanese summer in 2022.

This likely means that the next work to be released after XXXHOLiC‘s 19 volumes run should be Tokyo Babylon. The 19th volume of XXXHOLiC is expected to be released in May/June of 2022. We could have Tokyo Babylon starting on May or a little later, in case we have a shorter series in between.

This release may or may not tie-in with the new Tokyo Babylon TV Anime project, which is hopefully still in the works.

On a related note, in light of yesterday’s news that GoHands animation studio is suing Kodansha-affiliated entertainment company King Records, CLAMP posted an official statement on their twitter account:

The statement can be translated as follows:

Regarding Tokyo Babylon

It’s still a bit away, but the special edition with the newly drawn covers we promised previously will be included in the CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION that is being currently published.

If we’ll get approval/permission, CLAMP will be happy to take part not only to the development of the new edition, but also to all the related media mix from now on.

Above all, we hope you can still enjoy Tokyo Babylon from the bottom of our hearts

In Japan, “media mix” is used to describe any media adaptation in any form of audio or video format. What CLAMP mean here is that they hope they can participate in any upcoming media adaptation (audio or video) of Tokyo Babylon if they have the permission to.

This note reaffirms that, as original creators, CLAMP are not always allowed to participate in the adaptations of their own works. This is pretty common as far as adaptations go. In fact, CLAMP are known to be one of the few original creators who get involved in the media adaptations of their works, but it’s a case by case basis and it’s not a given that they will always be part of the production. This could be because they chose to (as it happened in the past), or because they were not given the choice. CLAMP have previously stated that they are first and foremost a group that create manga.

At this point, we don’t know what is happening with the new Tokyo Babylon anime, we don’t even know if it’s still happening. This note from CLAMP indicates that they are not yet involved or they are but it’s too soon to announce that. In case it’s the former, I do hope that the producing committee gets hold of this message and consider involving CLAMP in the production, since they explicitly expressed a desire to do so this time.

With Tokyo Babylon 2021, CLAMP have barely spoke or shown enthusiasm about it and we all saw what happened later…

The covers of XXXHOLiC #1 and #2 for the CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION edition have been announced!

They will be released on August 5. They can be ordered via Amazon Japan (volume 1, volume 2).

This CLAMP tweet informs that volumes 3 and 4 will be released on September 6. So for now I guess it is safe to assume that these will be released at a 2-volumes pace every month.

You can see the obi strip in Amazon Japan’s pictures and it mentions something about a XXXHOLiC postcard binder for those who purchase all volumes. The deadline is June 30 2022, therefore I assume by then the XXXHOLiC re-releases will be over. It makes sense if you consider 19 volumes for XXXHOLiC and 4 volumes for XXXHOLiC Rei (23 volumes total, 11.5 months to release them all). I need more information about that postcard binder, though. Does this mean each volume contains a postcard?

Now, about the art, I thought it would be something like that. They had to be generic enough in order to give them all a sense of similarity between them. The digital coloring is also something that makes sense, considering the amount of work but it also contributes to that sense of similarity between all covers. Think about CLAMP No Kiseki and how all covers convey the same atmosphere. It’s the same here.

The style is definitely CLAMP’s current style, as seen mostly by Yuuko. But if this is going to run for the next few years (it all indicates to that), we are gonna watch CLAMP’s style changing through these covers. It’ll be interesting.

I like them, they look minimalist. I am curious to see how their other works will translate into this aesthetic.

CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION: new versions of CLAMP works with new cover art

CLAMP works published by Kodansha and Kadokawa will get new versions and released under a series entitled CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION. All books will feature a new cover illustration by CLAMP.

The first work to be re-released in this new series is XXXHOLiC, in August.

Kodansha‘s website already has details for XXXHOLiC #1 and #2. They will both come out on August 5.

The details for XXXHOLiC #1 and #2 indicate that the books will have B6 format (same as the regular XXXHOLiC volumes) for the price of 880 yens each. The website indicates that these will be monthly releases. Perhaps we can expect at least two new volumes every month.

As for number of pages, the original XXXHOLiC volumes 1 and 2 have 182 pages each, while their CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION editions are listed as having 184 and 192 pages, respectively. The additional 2 pages for volume 1 could be for advertisements, but the 10 additional pages for volume 2 is a little strange.

The listings say that the books will have the same design and binding, only the cover art will be different with a new illustration drawn by CLAMP. This is so that the collection will look good on a bookshelf.

Beginning with XXXHOLiC is most likely a strategy in order to tie in with the musical stage play, which will be opening in September.

With that logic, I would say that the Tokyo Babylon version will most likely come out at the same time as the new TV Anime is airing. Speaking of Tokyo Babylon, I would say that the new versions that have been previously announced by Kadokawa are the CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION ones. In other words, I don’t think we will have two new versions for Tokyo Babylon.

Bear in mind that Kadokawa has the rights to RG Veda as well. The only works that have never been republished by a different publisher are Shin Shunkaden (Hakusensha) and GATE 7 (Shueisha). Unless Kadokawa or Kodansha acquired the rights to those two and we don’t know yet, these might be the only two works left out of this collection. All the other works are either originally or acquired by Kodansha or Kadokawa.

This is really great news because not only it means we will have a new illustration for every cover, but also a chance to give a bigger format (B6) for works which were originally published in a smaller format (X, for example).

In terms of release schedule, roughly speaking there are about 162 volumes for all CLAMP works published by Kadokawa and Kodansha. If we are looking at a 2-volumes per month pacing, this could take around 80 months to get them all released (approximately 7 years).

I can’t help but think how they will deal with the works that remain incomplete. I guess they can always go back years from now and release the remaining volumes that will eventually be published in order to complete the collection.

Either way, this is super exciting!
