Card Captor Sakura and Tsubasa books pricing announced

Four CLAMP books are scheduled to be released in December and the prices have been announced.

Card Captor Sakura Clear Card arc #1 (regular edition)

Release date: December 2
Price: 429 yens

* Kodansha has yet to announce the price for the limited edition but some online shops are listing it for 2280 yens (like Animate).

Official Guide Book Tsubasa CARACTere CHRoNiCLE

Release date: December 2
Price: 880 yens

Tsubasa Mini Artbook – Tsubasa ILLuSTRaTION CHRoNiCLE

Release date: December 2
Price: 680 yens

Official Guide Book Tsubasa SToRy CHRoNiCLE

Release date: December 31
Price: 880 yens

Now let’s talk about these prices. Both guidebooks having the same price seems fair to me, and the prices are OK too, as expected. Now, I was a little surprised to know that the mini-artbook is actually cheaper than the guidebooks. The binding must be similar to the two previously released artbooks, I’m just curious about its size dimensions (A4 vs A5). We also have the release date for the second guide: the very last day of 2016.

Regarding Card Captor Sakura, the price is similar to the original tankoubon release from the 90s, so it looks like it’s gonna be closer to that edition than the Nakayoshi 60th Anniversary edition, design-wise. It doesn’t look like it’s coming with color pages, either… We still have to know more info about the limited edition but it’d say the book itself will be the same for both versions and the bonus material (a mangaka set for volume 1) will be the only difference between them.

  1. There is quite a big difference between the limited and the regular editions of CCS, many people might give up on the special version bcs of the cost, especially since the extras that comes with it are not related to the manga itself: it’s not a bluray of DVD of something, nothing exclusive made by CLAMP etc …

About the TRC books, no surprise there, I knew they wouldn’t be too expensive, the price of a ‘regular book’ ^_^
It’s indeed strange that the artbook cost less than the guidebooks, unless we consider that the work put into making the guidebooks justify it (interviews, surveys, profiles, drawings from other artists etc … ), while the artbook is just a collection of pictures that need to be printed and nothing else, and in this particular case, we are talking about a mini collection which clearly won’t have too many pages from the looks of the price…

  2. It’s kind of odd that the new CCS books might not come with color pages at all, since Kodansha printed the old editions with two color pages and a color bookmark each. I wonder if Arcoinc (the graphic designer that worked on the Nakayoshi 60th Anniversary set, the 20th Anniversary Artbook, and the Memorial Box) is going to do the cover design this time?

    • You do have a point there. I completely forgot about those two pages — I actually don’t own a single original CCS volume (I only have the Deluxe and Nakayoshi 60th editions). So hey, we might get a few color pages after all!

    • I also do not personally own the japanese regular edition, nonetheless I do have the scans of all 12 volumes and there is no color pages at all, unless you are talking about the illustrations on the inside cover (front and back).

      • Isn’t there like the Clow book or something? Then in Sakura Card Arc there is that Clow illustration. Are those B&W too?

Gosh we are lousy CLAMP fans XD

        Like

        • That’s right: for the clow arc, the first page of each volume is the Clow book, and in the Sakura Card arc we indeed got a picture of Clow Reed, and absolutely everything is in black and white!
The only things in color are the obvious: the dust cover and the inside cover + the cards/bookmarks that were gifted. But if we are talking about the manga itself, everything is in B&W.

            • Even though there was no color pages inside, CLAMP did work hard on them: they drew 5 new illustrations for each volume (front + back of both dust and inside covers + bookmark).
I don’t think we can expect that now ^^; We will very likely only get one new front cover, like they did for the 2015 edition…

              • Don’t forget the ~50 little character bios CLAMP drew to replace the Nakayoshi advertisements. (At least, I think CLAMP drew them specifically for the books and not the magazines…)

                Like

                • We are talking about those columns that appeared here and there with characters bios (their likes, dislikes, date of birth etc…), right? There are 29 of those ^_^

                  Like

                  • You’re right, there are only 29. Considering that the bios cover even minor characters that don’t get any lines, CCS really had a small cast, didn’t it?

                    Like

      • Yes, I’m talking about those color illustrations. It’s hard to tell from an online scan, but they aren’t printed on the inside covers — they’re separate pages in the books! The reverse sides of the color pages contain the publishing information (also printed in color).

        • I see: my error is due to the fact I own the spanish edition published by Glénat > they really did a fantastic job on them, they got tick white paper and very neat printing, the same dimensions, and they further respected the original japanese release by reproducing exactly the same dust cover and even gifting the bookmarks with each book, and the inside covers were actually the illustrations we are talking about, so I thought that too was a reflection of the jap version…
          Thanks for clarifying that point!

  3. The special edition of vol01 of CCS was posted on amiami, here thought it appears as ‘sold out’ already (I asked their staff before about it: why did some items appear as sold out as soon as they were listed on their website, and they answered that it was sort of a tentative thing, that they would be trying to get it in stock, but didn’t at the moment, and to wait a bit to see if it becomes available…)
    Still nothing on amazon japan, and I am talking about all the books above (tsubasa and CCS) ;___;

  4. The special edition of CCS CC vol01 has been added on amazon japan:

    カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編(1) 特装版 (講談社キャラクターズA)

The regular edition was not listed, only the special one.
It says the book got 160 pages… I thought it was more? But then again, let’s see: 5 chapters with a medium of +30 pages each, well, it *is* actually the right number! I’m not too sure the edition will be the same as the 2015 one, and if it is, the difference in thickness will be quite obvious on our shelves hahaha~

    Like

    • I think 160p is just an estimate. I counted 177 pages for all 5 chapters so I’d say 170 pages is granted for sure. Plus we have usually blank pages between chapters and one or two in the beginning and end of the book. I think it’s gonna be just as thick as the original CCS books.

  5. A new ad was posted for the TWC books. I unfortunately can’t read it, but I believe it’s quite obvious it says that the Illustrations books will have 64pages. The number of pages certainly explains the cost: with 32 sheets of paper, the book will be really thin.

    Like

    • Thanks for this! Yes it’s gonna be the thinnest of all CLAMP artbooks. I still want the measures, though @_@ A4 or A5?

Where did you get this ad from, btw? It’s so neat.

      Like

    • I just saw the ad on CLAMP’s twitter account ^^” I thought that looked like animate indeed.

BTW, Wish’s artbook is only slighly thicker than Tsubasa’s mini-artbook, with 78 pages.

      Like

      • I’m not too sure what we will end up with in the end, but considering the number of pages, taking as a ref the prices of the previous artbooks, and the fact that more than half of the content are older artworks from the previous TRC series (aka nothing new or exclusive), this is definitely the right cost for an A4 book with dust cover and good printing, although thin!

        Like

          • Just a quick question > about the special edition of TWC volume 3, I-ve only seen very few photos of it online, but it seems like we don-t get a full view of the new artwork? *I am talking about the illustration related to the oneshot*

            Like

              • Thanks.
I am actually hesitating about purchasing it or not (I didn’t buy vol01 and 02), due to the oneshot included separately and which was not added at the end of the volume like I expected it too…I usually try to have all the manga material by CLAMP if possible.
On the other side, the scans of the oneshot were good, I have the translation, and I will eventually purchase the either the english/spanish/french edition of TWC, so is it necessary to spend money on it, when even the exclusive illustration inside was cropped and have text on it, and will be included in an artbook I already pre-ordered…?

                Like

  6. Does any one know if the TWC material is going to be translated in English (and by who)? The second Tsubasa illustration artbook (Tsubasa ALBuM De REProDUCTioNS 02) never got an English release. I know it’s an artbook, but I would really love to see CLAMP’s comments in the end and a translated omake. I was lucky enough to purchase the first artbook and to find the second one in my neighboring china town. I still wish that someone could translate the comments. Thankfully, the fans translated the omake! I’m not that worried for the guides, but I’m still worried that they may not translated due to the popularity of TWC. (Though still seeing TWC in stores, even if it’s a small quantity, makes me happy!)

    Like

    • I haven’t heard anything about english releases so far. It would be really nice if they did translate it, specially the guidebooks with all the extra materials and interviews. Of course the artbook would be great too, reading their comments for each illustration.

Fingers crossed Del Rey will translate them despite TWC not having the same popularity as TRC.

    • I did notice the “compact size” info on Animate’s ad, but that’s a little relative. It could mean compact in measures or compact in lenght.

I still haven’t given up on an A4 artbook — but come to think of it, maybe the reason why Kadokawa released Wish’s artbook the way it is was due to its few pages nature… the suspense is killing me! The pricing does seem to point to a A5 format. Wish’s artbook was more expensive but it had a hard cover.

    • Completely unrelated: do you have any of the “Kamigami” books by Asano Atsuko? I bought Kamigami no Utatane and was disappointed to find out it doesn’t have any CLAMP art other than the cover.

      • no, I do not own any of those books.

          • Oh, ok!
From your first post, what I had understood is that Clamp didn’t draw anything inside the book, but the actual situation is that the regular edition doesn’t have them? That’s just plain mean for the fans D: Or do they consider these illustrations as a ‘special content’?

            Like

            • They drew a lot of B&W and colores illustrations that appeared monthly in Animedia magazine. I know the colored ones are included in the hardcover edition for sure (not sure about the B&W ones), released in 2009, but I’ve learned the hard way that the paperback edition doesn’t have ANY of them (colored or B&W), released in 2013.

Remember Hakken Anime? I also bought the book version and there is also NONE of the artwork except for the cover T_T

              Like

              • I do remember Hakken Anime.
This must be very disappointing for you, and for all the fans actually: most must have had, and very logically, the same expectations as you 😦
There is no such a thing as an artbook for that sort of pictures as far as I know: I would have also thought they would naturally have been included in the final books!

                  • Completely unrelated too: but are you into super heroes movies?
I’ll be going to watch Doctor Strange right now (I leave the house in 15min) and very excited about it!
I think pretty much watched all the Marvel and DC comics movies XD

  7. Here goes the cover of volume01, it seems like we are back to the old formula of ‘Sakura only’ on the cover (+kero this time, though). We will have to see if CLAMP goes on like this or if they’ll include other characters in the next volumes…
    The other thing is that the extra goods included with the special edition doesn’t like that impressive as seen in this ad ^^;

Cover of Nakayoshi: I didn’t they would feature CCS on the cover this month too, it took me a sec to realize she had bunny ears haha~

    • Thank you for those! The cover art looks pretty and very contemporary. I guess the design will be similar to the original edition, after all. The blank background is there just like the previous 12 volumes.

CCS is in the cover of this and also the next month! Two months in a row. And I don’t understand the bunny ears since it’s Christmas, not Easter ^^”

        Think: snow bunny! XD

It seems like we will be getting a new year themed illustration on next month’s cover then ^^

Since chapter 06 is the first chapter of vol02, I wonder if they made a 2 pages new artwork or not…

No, I didn’t know about this picture of Eriol: simple but nice! We see so little of him, well, ‘them’, since Clow Reed is reflected on the mirror.
Considering that CLAMP have been showing off different characters in almost every new splash, I guess we can’t assume there is any special meaning behind this one…

And it indeed looks like a one page only pic; in the previous series, if I’m not mistaken, the first chapter of each volume had a 2 pages spread.

I remember being surprised to see a spread in the last chapter of the volume, instead of the first chapter of the next ^^; Well, I guess this is all planned and there is a logic behind it…
But really, how greedy we are: we get new illustrations of CCS every month, but we still ask for more XD

They also list it as having 160 pages, so Chapter 5 might be part of volume 2, after all. If we count all pages of Chapters 1 to 4, that gives us 142 pages. What’s with the remaining 18 pages? We might have 4-5 blank pages between chapters and 2-3 of credits and publishing info. But still… I don’t get it.

Plus, it’s gonna be B6 format, not like the original series but same format as the Nakayoshi 60th Edition.

            • 🎃 Happy Halloween! 🎃

Thank you for keeping me up to date with this: the number of pages is quite low with only 160 pages…this would be the thinner CCS volume ever, or more like, I think it might be one of the books with less pages of all CLAMP’s series all together? (exceptions: Clover and one volume only books like Shirayuki Hime or Miyuki-chan in Wonderland)

Nonetheless, the 2 pages color spread we got in chapter 5 would make sens now, if it’s indeed supposed to be the 1st chapter of a volume…
But even like that, as you said, I don’t get it either: what will they put in those 18 pages, even considering blank pages and credits? @_@ Ads…? Like, all the latest books released by Kodansha (the 9 volumes, the memorial box and the artbook). It’s not ‘wrong’ of them to do so, but still a bit upsetting, I want manga material!

              This volume ended up being shrouded in more mysteries they we accounted for ^^;

But seeing the speed at which events have been unfolding and the facts mos things are left unresolved and unsaid, I think that our bet that there might be 6 volumes is very possible. And even more than that depending on what kind of deals they made about the upcoming anime (they would want more manga material to animate than X vols?).

              • 🎃 Happy Halloween! 🎃

The Kobato. volumes had 160 pages too. So they’re gonna be as thick as them.

I was thinking, maybe we’ll get a few extra pages drawn exclusively for the tankoubon? Wouldn’t be the first time that happens.

So I guess we’re having at least one color page? I hope so. Also I noticed how for the first time Sakura is not holding her staff in the cover. She always held it before.

And yes, I think 6 volumes is a given, and the pacing will be quicker since we’re talking about 160 pages instead of 180.

                Like

            • I forgot about Kobato, you are right!

I also think we might get those color pages after all ^^ > the cover of the volume and the first chapter’ splash? -very possible! 🙂

I didn’t notice the wand thing, but it makes sens if we take in consideration the comment CLAMP wrote about the illustration on the last chapter of volume 12: the one which which Sakura is flying while holding flowers in her arms > Sakura is leaning forward, which symbolizes her progress toward the future, and she is not holding her wand, she is able to accomplish what she put her mind into with her own powers…
That, or there is no much meaning behind it, and Sakura simply doesn’t have a wand to show off at this point in the manga (since there are still too many questions surrounding the new staff…)

But what do you mean extra pages drawn exclusively for the tankoubon? Nothing come to mind.
I’m definitely not expecting a oneshot, neither a picture gallery nor characters designs.
The only thing I can think of now, is that they might feel the need to link the first and second series: pages which reminds us of the events of vol01-12?

              Like

              • Or that the staff isn’t hers to begin with?

But what do you mean extra pages drawn exclusively for the tankoubon? Nothing come to mind.

Additional pages in the manga, I mean. They’ve done so for the last Nirai Kanai volume, and the first Reservoir volume (there’s an extra color page of Syaoran and Sakura in the tube that wasn’t published in the magazine). You know, additional pages of conversation between Sakura and Syaoran after they meet again, additional page for the dream sequence, stuff like that.

                • This staff could indeed be something borrowed, but from who, for what purposes, and what sens would her actual actions have? > she creates new cards one after another with her magic and then, she gives away the whole lot (willingly or forced…) to ‘someone’. How could said ‘someone’ use cards made from Sakura’s magic to begin with…?
Well, that’s all to say we still know nothing about what’s happening, and need so many more info to make sense of what’s happening…so exciting! XD

I remember now: there was indeed a time in which we compared the final tankubon with the chapters released in the Shounen Magazine, and there were indeed a few differences from one another. It feels like a memory from so long ago, but at the same time, it felt like we were talking about it just yesterday…
Well, I own all the magazines so far, except the Nov and Dec issues which will be sent to me later on with others orders. So I will flip around the pages and compare when I have everything in hand ^__^
