TRC 220 !

The long silence is over!

Chapter 220 is up at MangaHelpers. Translations here and here.

Double splash page black and white! Not something we see everyday =) Pretty cool-looking one, by the way.

Eh? Clones cannot die? And you tell us that now, Ohkawa? Great… xD Not sure how I feel about this revival thing yet. To me dead is dead.

Yuuko will grant them life again? With no price? Take it or leave it, special offer, 100% OFF!!!!!!

Dum dum dum, revelations, dum dum dum! So at the verge of Yuuko’s death (I wonder what the cause of her almost-death was!), Clow made a wish so that she wouldn’t die (ashajkshakjhsajksh romantique!) And look at that, Fei Wang Reed used his own power to try to grant that wish. First evidence of the transformation devil to angel of Fei Wang xD

Dum dum dum, more revelations! The mess with Clow Country is explained. When Syaoran turned back time, the people who knew about Sakura’s death seal were affected, so in this new, rewound version of Clow, Nadeshiko was dead and Fujitaka became Syaoran’s (adoptive) father. The role of Clow’s king was filled by Clow himself, who traveled to Clow Country to fill the empty king’s place.

That is right, only one Clow, the same Clow of Card Captor Sakura. In one panel we see the moment of his departure and we see Kero and Yue, however, I’m not sure if the death we were informed about in CCS isn’t really a real death, meaning that he actually lied to Kero and Yue and traveled to Clow, or if this departure happened before the departure Kero and Yue always talked about.

Something tells me that Ohkawa tweaked CCS’s plot making Clow to lie about his death for Kero and Yue.

But Clow did eventually die, that is why Touya became the king of Clow, and that is how, like Yuuko says in this chapter, he left his magic power behind. Now, in the previous chapter we learned that Clow deposited part (or was it all?) of his power in Syaoran, right? Syaoran!Papa I assume? What about Eriol? Where does he fit in this mess? He had Clow’s powers too.

And it is just me or the reason why Yuuko opened the shop for granting people’s wishes was in order to use it as a price to revive clone!Sakura? Then she knew it all along clone!Sakura would die ;_; Is this the real purpose of the shop? The “event” Yuuko and CLAMP always talked about?

Okay, so Clow didn’t really strongly wished for Yuuko’s revival, he simply thought of wanting to see her opening her eyes again and that made her time stop? Wow. And that is why he wanted to get rid of his immense powers since. Thanks CLAMP, I found the explanation of Clow giving up his powers convincing enough (because of the whole romantic factor behind it. Clow/Yuuko = OTP).

I’m still a lot confused time-line wise. I don’t know what events come first and if they really don’t collide with each other. I’m talking about things like Clow being alive with Sakura’s star staff in Yuuko’s shop at the same time (it was already at Yuuko’s shop before Syaoran turned back time and thus, before Clow went to Clow). mama!Sakura met CCS!Sakura from the future in the dream? Confusing @_@

Next chapter, next week! But they don’t say anything about color pages O.o I still think there will be some, though.

    • There isn’t too much left to be revealed now, and I don’t think CLAMP will reveal every little detail. A lot of things small tidbits will be left unsaid I think.

  1. This is pretty interesting update, and getting me back into Tsubasa.

Though, I’m not going to lie, the “clones can’t die” thing does confuse me a bit. They’re essentially human, and as proved by C!Syaoran and C!Sakura, can gain the heart necessary to further justify their humanity. Can it not be taken away from them once they gain it? If that were true, they are almost better than the originals, since the originals can die and leave behind miserable friends and relatives who can never see them again.

Also, it’s been established that a price can be paid for someone, as established by Adult!Sakura paying the price for R!Mini-Syaoran to first travel to Clow Country. But Yuuko paying the price for Sakura — will it be in the form of the objects she collected from customers, or the work she did in guiding Watanuki and the other customers on their own journeys (even if some were led to their death)? That’s my concern. Yuuko did always say she was “selling” her wish-granting power, so in the end I suppose it’s feasible she can pay for Sakura’s life, though that a life can be “earned” makes me cringe a bit. Does paying for a clone’s life require less than paying for a “real” person (who can’t be brought back in the first place)?

I do however like the fact Clow inadvertently tried to bring Yuuko back, that his magic might have been too strong even for him (I’ve been shipping Yuuko and Clow from the first time they were mentioned in the same panel). I heard that Kero in CCS mentioned to Sakura offhandedly that Clow had a lot of personal problems – Yuuko’s halting of her death definitely counts. In that vein, now that CCS!Sakura should be the world’s most powerful magician, does she have her own problems to cope with? If a middle-aged man was angsting over his power, I can imagine Sakura has some woes of her own.

… tl;dr, yeah? I apologize if I got my facts screwy. I’m still trying to digest it all.

This is kind of a spoiler for xxxHOLiC, so highlight if you want to read it: The people who have had their wishes granted by Yuuko have completely forgotten about her, they have even forgotten about having made a wish at all. The only one who still remembers is Watanuki.

      And as a fellow Clow/Yuuko shipper, I have to say I also liked it how Clow didn’t do any of this on purpose. As much as I loved the sheer angst of it, it also kind of troubled me a little to see him portrayed as such a petty, selfish man – in a ‘screw the world, save the one I love’ way. We’ve seen it before in CLAMP, too. >>;

I know about that spoiler, but I did forget to incorporate that into my rant of doom. I wonder why that had to happen?

I think that’s such a key distinction – Clow really didn’t mean to fuck things up. I haven’t read RG Veda, but doesn’t the main character have a curse on them that makes it really hard to not fuck with the things around them, no matter how hard they try? So it does delve a little deeper into Clow, that for all his grandeur he couldn’t keep the one he loved. And makes Fei Wong look even worse, since apparently he couldn’t leave well enough alone.

The way I see it, Yuuko is connected to Sakura in a similar way as Clow is connected to Syaoran – a loved one about to die, and a beau that doesn’t want them to die, which resulted in that loved one being frozen in time. It’s like, Clow and Yuuko started the mess, FWR made it impossibly worse and Syaoran and Sakura got in charge of round two. I think it makes sense that they should be the ones paying to bring back the clones.

          There’s also the fact that Sakura’s real name isn’t Sakura, and neither is Yuuko’s. But I don’t want to think about that, it smells fishy. >>;

Also, I haven’t read RG Veda either, but I think that’s about right. I kind of liked how things turned out for Clow’s character – that sheer amount of power had to come with a heavy price. It has put CCS into a whole new perspective, too: he’s not just that guy who was bored from knowing everything, so he wanted to get rid of his magic. His powers caused some serious issues there.

    • For the clones, maybe they mean that their soul will always remain wandering about some place? Because physically speaking, they did die, they are not there anymore, but their soul went to that twisted world, because they are not “human”, maybe that’s what Yuuko means.

But yeah, that made me wonder if they can live forever.

      >will it be in the form of the objects she collected from customers, or the work she did in guiding Watanuki and the other customers on their own journeys (even if some were led to their death)?

      >Does paying for a clone’s life require less than paying for a “real” person (who can’t be brought back in the first place)?

Yeah, I guess there is no price to bring back someone from the dead, but the price for bringing a clone back to life (which isn’t a human being) is far too great.
I believe the work. But it could be the shop and everything within, who knows. Maybe passing it to someone else (Watanuki?)

      >In that vein, now that CCS!Sakura should be the world’s most powerful magician, does she have her own problems to cope with? If a middle-aged man was angsting over his power, I can imagine Sakura has some woes of her own.

Good question ^_~ We’ll find out when Syaoran dies xDDDD

  2. The thing about Clow having *thought* of that is a bit of an exaggeration, IMHO. I don’t know, maybe it’s just the way Yuuko said it, but I really think they’ll go with the whole “a heart’s true desire” thing again. I mean, Yuuko has been reinforcing the idea of ‘the power of wishes’ so keeping her alive probably was Clow’s wish, he just didn’t say it out loud. Otherwise I’m plain scared of him. Really, think about it:

Clow: *thinking* Hmm, I want it to rain today!
Squirtle used Rain Dance. Rain started to fall!
    Clow: Oh, yay! \o/

As for Clow not dying in the way we saw back in CCS, yes, that’s probably the case. Kerberos mentions he and Yue closed Clow’s eyes at one point, and yet Sakura sees something completely different, so obviously he tweaked their memories there. It’s not that much of a stretch to say he tweaked with Eriol’s memory, as well, so he wouldn’t know where the hell Clow was going. It would kind of explain how Eriol didn’t know about Sakura/Syaoran, since Clow pretty much did.

And speaking of Eriol, I begin to think his powers are just the tip of the iceberg when compared to Clow’s – and they were further reduced by the end of CCS manga, too. Which, again, makes me pretty scared of Clow, because Eriol was very powerful as it was. DX

    TL;DR: GODDAMMIT CLOW QUIT BEING SUCH A GOD-FRIGGIN’-MODE. DDDDX And yes, I rambled. This chapter woke the Clow fangirl beast. >>;

    Like

    • Well he is the biggest magician of the CLAMP universe, so I’m not sure if it’s exaggeration. Plus it’s a fair reason for him wanting to let go of his powers. It has been said that it was so great he himself couldn’t control it anymore, and that’s a good example of this out-of-control situation.

    😀

This was a good chapter. I would post my thoughts, I’ve already done it so many times on mangahelpers though.

Now, in all honesty, I wanted Clone Syaoran to ‘tell her he loved her, hug her, and kiss her.’

As quoted from my Mangahelpers post.

Seriously, yay. Shunraiki is also coming up. 🙂

    >Fei Wang Reed used his own power to try to grant that wish
So the one who Fei Wang Reed try to revive is indeed Yuuko?

    >I’m talking about things like Clow being alive with Sakura’s star staff in Yuuko’s shop at the same time (it was already at Yuuko’s shop before Syaoran turned back time and thus, before Clow went to Clow)
Maybe Clow went to another world first after left Tomoeda, for shopping XD. Or it’s just time-mess effect thanks to Syaoran’s rewind time?

      Yes!

      >Maybe Clow went to another world first after left Tomoeda, for shopping XD. Or it’s just time-mess effect thanks to Syaoran’s rewind time?

Yeah, we are dealing with independent timelines, that really complicates things.

        >Yeah, we are dealing with independent timelines, that really complicates things.

After some thought, I think the mess can be explained…Clow should left from his and Yuuko’s world to Clow country before R.Syaoran rewinds time. That means Clow go directly from his and Yuuko’s time to the distorted Clow country where the clones are. Then, it is hitsuzen that Clones are created because Clow knows of the existence of such place (the distorted Clow country).

  7. i have a theory though. couldn’t kaho mizuki from CCS be the future reincarnation of Yuuko? I mean, if we were going by the theory of Clow being in love with Yuuko… wouldn’t that have a possibility?

it would just mean that the current yuuko’s sacrificing her shop and majority of her powers as a price for sakura. this would also involve her twisting time back for the clones to restart life anew as the papa syaoran and mama sakura to tsubasa’s syaoran.

    Like

      • ^^; and to expand the theory… i’m actually looking at it from the prespectives of power and age. technically yuuko dies before clow, right? that would make her reincarnation older than him… and what if something that was left behind by their powers ensured that these two would meet again and restart their relationship from scratch? xD

        Like

        • It is not sure Kaho is older than Eriol. After all, he should even be the same age as Fujitaka (as they were “born” at the same time). If I remember well, somebody in CCS said that “Eriol kept his childish appearance until he would meet Sakura”.
Still, the idea that Kaho would be Yuuko in another life is quite nice.

          Like

      • some similiarities indeed…

if we’re going on the whole reincarnation bit, you can see how it works when clow split his reincarnated self into two bits: eriol and fujitaka.

we can see eriol resembles clow quite a bit, and that may partially be because of the memories he inherited but fujitaka… on an outward appearance with some of his personality, does not.

it really wouldn’t be that surprising if kaho really IS yuuko’s future reincarnation

Clow/Yuuko! This totally puts the Soel to Larg book into perspective!

And having just viewed the raw, I squealed again when C!Syaoran started to run to C!Sakura…aww!

I’ve been pretty apathetic to TRC recently, because it’s been so confusing, but this chapter completely opened up the plot again! So many explainations!

But, of course, they raise just as many questions as they answer!!!

I’m thinking she will die too, I think she wants to die, after all she’s been living in this loop for a very long time. She didn’t want FWR to revive her, maybe because it would bring too much tragedy, yes, but maybe because she wants to just move on.

  9. I love how Clamp is totally writing self-fanfic. And I’m glad that there only has ever been one Clow Reed.

Sad CCS tie-ins are sad. Sad Yuuko is sad. The clones seem to be a lot more active and alive than they’ve been in a while, though.

The difference between death/disappearing, because the clones were created and not born, is interesting. If they’re reborn, will they be able to die instead of just disappear?

    • Yeah, I was thinking that too… probably just one Clow and probably just one Yuuko (only one FWR too?)

      >what ever happened to Yukito and Touya?

    yayz!! Clow&Yuuko = OTP!!!♥

also!, don’t Forget about Fujitaka Kinomoto, in CCS manga he also has a part of Clow’s power :O

so it means, CLow divided his power in 3: Eriol, Fujitaka, Syaora-dad(CCS?)

      • Re: *tears of joy*

In CCS, fujitaka originally has no magical power but since he is Clow’s another reincarnation, Eriol askes Sakura to divide his power to Fujitaka. So, Finally, Eriol has equal magical power as Fujitaka.:)

          • Re: *tears of joy*

I always wondered if Fujitaka did find out the whole ‘I’m half of Clow’s soul’ thing. But then, Clow’s split his powers 4 ways right? Eriol, Fujitaka, Syaoran-Daddy and himself, at least until he died. Not to mention, he probably gave the cards enough to survive without fading until they were ready to be changed to Sakura cards.

Wow, he really did want to dilute his powers!

            Like

        • Re: *tears of joy*

Maybe he could split it once, but not more than that, as he did not have the power to. Or maybe he felt he owed Fujitaka powers, since it was half his soul. I don’t see him finding a way to split his soul easily… maybe he experimented a bit too, and Fujitaka was the result, but not as he wanted it?

I only wonder when Mokona=Modoki are created…is it after the time when Yuuko is supposed to be dead? So these Mokonas are created because Clow and Yuuko knows about FWR’s intention. From the Soel to Larg book, then Clow should stay at least a year with Yuuko before parting to Clow’s country?

  16. Well, concerning the bodies of the clones and their lives, I don’t think they could live forever. In the previous chapter, Yuuko mentions that she brought a piece of each of their bodies/souls before they completely vanished into the dream verse, I suppose, and as a result the rest of the shards of their existence followed suit. This is comparable to folklore of real people, where it is said that some spirits who have not passed on reside around their graves (usually near their bones), because it is the only thing that clings them to the world before they pass on. Take for instance the boy that Watanuki befriended as a child. Before he officially died (near a cherry blossom tree at that), he gave a piece of himself, a bone, that probably helped solidify his spiritual form in the world of the living before passing on. The only difference with the clones is that they completely disappear, body and soul. They do not leave bones, organs, or any piece of themselves behind unless, at least from how I understood it, they have clung themselves to life. Yuuko is giving up her life as a price for that, you see, as Syaoran has to make that choice for himself.

Of course, this is speculation, but who knows? ^^; This is Clamp. I look forward to each chapter, especially now that Holic seems to be finally veering in the right direction. Huzzah~.

    • That folklore is what inspired JK Rowling to write about Voldemort’s Horcruxes, I think ^^

  19. Kero and Yue don’t remember Clow’s death exactly or Clow changed their memories, if I’m not mistaken (which I probably am not), so isn’t it possible he sealed them away and then departed for the Kingdom of Clow?

I think Yuuko doesn’t need them to pay because she’s been granting wishes this whole time in order to accumulate enough… magic related credit to grant this one wish. I’m still kind of stunned she’s in this liminality of not being alive or dead. I feel so bad for Watanuki right now…

I think it’s just easier to say that Yuuko’s shop doesn’t obey time and space because it’s a “stopped time”, the future and past are the same as the present. And the same applies to the dreamscape. So Clow, Sakura Kinomoto, mama!Sakura, and Syaoran Jr. just all appeared at the right moment for all the things that needed to be there or needed to have happened to be there.

And about Yue and Kero… Clow most probably manipulated their memories to make them belive he died… (poor Yue ;___;)

Made my day! It’s been too long since the last one.. And this one had the two Syaorans ^^

So wait, just to backtrack for a sec, are we decided on the existence of 3 sets of syao/saku pairs (CCS, C and R?) and also their whereabouts?
    – C!pair with Yuuko in the dream-world-thingy
    – CCS!pair with R!Syaoran
    …. so where’s R!Sakura?

I think this is what happened:

R!Sakura’s soul is inside of a tube similar to what CCS!Sakura and CCS!Syaoran were in

While her body is with Yuuko.

That was the impression I got.

but the first two parts are true as of right now (ahh…I was so excited when CCS!Saku and Syao went to their son and are helping him~ I hope they get back to that soon)

Oh okay, that makes sense. I remember she got transferred to a dream world or something, that’ probably the tube. Hopefully she’ll come back soon.. I can see C!pair having a happy ending but I’m not sure about the R!pair.. Ehee yeah CCS!pair are awesome, I hope CLAMP doesn’t kill them off!

          >___< Argh I know. My favorite chara is R!Syao actually, so seeing what he's going through right now is hard. The clones…well I always was neutral about them…

I really hope R!Syao has his happy ending. The clones, like you said will obviously get one, and CCS!pair…well they got married, but I think they would be happier if their kid(s) returned back to them.
