Card Captor Sakura ~Clear Card arc~ #9 first week sales report

© CLAMP・Shigatsu Tsuitachi CO.,LTD. / 講談社

The ninth volume of Card Captor Sakura ~Clear Card arc~ debuted at the 3rd position in Oricon’s weekly ranking, with an estimate of 77,620 copies sold in its first week of sales. This is the second lowest first week sales for a Clear Card volume, only behind volume 2. This also happened last time, with volume 8, but unfortunately the numbers for volume 9 were even lower.

Special edition numbers aside and looking at regular edition numbers alone, volume 9 had a better performance than volume 8 (77,620, against 74,329 for volume 8 in its first week), but combined with the special edition (CD Drama part 2), volume 8 had a better first week.

These numbers are for the regular edition, only. Numbers for the special edition (Stationery set) are unknown as it did not appear on the ranking. Keep in mind that pre-orders and special edition sales might have affected these first week sales numbers.

It is worth mentioning that Oricon only takes into account a certain number of shops. These numbers are only an estimate and it’s possible that the real figures are higher than these.

The chart below shows the progress in the sales of Card Captor Sakura ~Clear Card arc~ over the weeks and compares it with previous volumes’ performances (click on it for dynamic version):

Let’s wait and see how it will perform on next week’s ranking. Hopefully this is not the last we’ve seen of volume 9.

Tokyo BABYLON TV Anime announced for 2021

A week ago a mysterious countdown began on King Amusement Creative‘s YouTube channel and shared on CLAMP-FANS twitter and instagram accounts, which fans quickly deciphered to be related to Tokyo BABYLON. King Amusement Creative is a music label and anime distributor that is associated to Kodansha.

After much speculation, the countdown reached its end today to announce a brand new TV Anime adaptation for one of CLAMP’s earliest and most beloved works, Tokyo BABYLON.

Here is the first PV that premiered after the countdown:

There is already an official website as well as twitter and instagram accounts.

Tokyo BABYLON 2021 seems to be the official title of this adaptation. The story will be updated to be set in modern 2021 Tokyo and according to the official website, a total of 11 episodes are planned.

The animation production will be in charge of GoHands, which are known for working on the Mardock Scramble series.

Nothing else is known at this point regarding the staff and cast, as well as air date. I’m particularly interested in whether CLAMP will be more involved in this project in providing scripts or something else.

I’m very thrilled for the Tokyo BABYLON readers right now, who have waited a really long time for a complete anime adaptation. I don’t know if this is exactly what they expected, but I hope this project will treat the original work with all the respect it deserves.

I am very fond of Tokyo BABYLON‘s aesthetics, which I think it’s one of its strongest qualities and what makes Tokyo BABYLON so special. I am a little concerned to know that this adaptation will not follow those aesthetics in favor of a contemporary, 2021 anime aesthetics (which I am personally not very fond of).

As usual, I’m hoping for the best and that this adaptation will bring a new generation of readers to this fabulous work by CLAMP!

Stay tuned for more news as they come!

CLAMP BOOK #19 (CLAMP doujinshi) – Video Review

Shoten 5 was a milestone in CLAMP’s doujinshi career for introducing for the first time the trio from what would later become Tokyo Babylon.
This release is also popular for its, hmmm, exquisite extras.

Card Captor Sakura – Clear Card arc #9 cover

The official twitter account of Nakayoshi magazine tweeted yesterday a better look at the Card Captor Sakura – Clear Card arc volume 9 cover and a first look at the coffret-style stationery set that comes with the special edition.

I was a little confused at first with the announcement because I wasn’t sure how much of a makeup set that looked like a stationery set or how much of a stationery set that looked like a makeup set it would be. Apparently it is the later (it appears readers of Nakayoshi are not quite ready yet for makeup, …which is good?).

The new illustration from the can looks very adorable!

Both regular and special editions will be released on October 13.

You can pre-order it on Amazon.jp and CD Japan.

Card Captor Sakura Clear Card arc vol. 9 will be released on October 13.

As usual, a regular and a special edition will be released simultaneously.

This time, the special edition will come with a “luxurious coffret-style” stationery set.

The 3-pieces set will include:

1) A 2-way can case featuring Sakura, Kero and Suppi. The case will be double-sided printing, so you can flip it over and use whichever side you prefer.

2) 30 sheets of “make-palette style” sticker that can be stored in the above can case. There will be 4 different patterns: “Sakura-chan’s cheek”, “Kero-chan’s eye shadow”, “Dream key eye shadow” and “Brush”.

3) A Sakura glitter lip pen.

The items will be designed with new illustrations drawn by CLAMP. Kodansha recommends the set for those of age 15 and up.

The special edition will cost 2480 yens.

Finally we have news for volume 9! Usually It would come out in September but most likely due to the delays in the serialization caused by COVID-19, they had to push it back a little, but only by a month, thankfully!

The special edition is… interesting. Interesting because I think this is the first time we have CLAMP and Kodansha stating, through the bonus material of the special edition, that Clear Card is targeted at those of age 15 and up. The kids have grown, officially.

I was a little confused translating this as this seems to be a make-up set that resembles a stationery set. Apparently that’s a thing in Japan?
