Beautiful color title page featuring Touya. It reminded me of the early CLAMP style somehow, if it weren’t for the gradient in his robes. He even looks slightly younger? But I think it’s because of the angle he is drawn. I love that its pattern is made of peaches (Touya’s name means peach flower, of course you all remember that).
The Japanese version of the color page has a small glimpse of the cover of volume 9 (theme color is green!). It looks amazing as we knew it would. Make sure to check out the YouTube video for the Japanese version to see it 😉
SO IT WAS A CARD AFTER ALL! I was reluctant to think so because that would only drag things more, but oh well…
That card originally appeared in the TV Anime in a completely different context. That makes the list of clear cards up to 22 and 5 anime exclusive cards (so far at least).
I have a teapot that is transparent JUST LIKE THAT and it makes me want to try so badly with a flower tea now.
Sakura is all impressed by it (like me) and Syaoran is all cut the bullshit, let’s get things straight.
Okay, so the next few pages went by really fast with all the dream recollection. The fact that RECORD can do that is REALLY HANDY for the storytelling. CLAMP are revisiting the dreams, from the very early ones until the most recent ones and that is good. These two have some catching up to do.
Syaoran genuinely doesn’t seem to know who the Mysterious Cloaked Figure is (he even thought it could be Kaito, so cute) but he is familiar with the robes being from a well known magician family from Europe. Syaoran is also impressed by the dragon and mentions that it would take someone with great power to make one. You mean someone as powerful as… Sakura?
Sakura was about to stop the dream sequence when the dreaded dream of Syaoran as the Mysterious Cloaked Figure was about to appear and SO GLAD Syaoran could see it I mean C’MONNNN.
So it turns out it was ANOTHER card? I was like what the hell just happened….? Basically nothing is safe, everything can be a card at this point. Trust no one, seriously. Also how f*cked up is the fact that she was able to secure a card from a recording? Okay…
So DREAMING is the 23rd card and it features the Mysterious Cloaked Figure. I wonder if it will change its appearance once we do know who is it?
But that got me thinking, maybe it was the card all along and nobody is under those robes? I guess it could be the Akiho, the most obvious answer, and we did see her wearing the robes in that color title page, but we know she doesn’t have any powers.
We’ll see if the Mysterious Cloaked Figure will keep appearing in Sakura’s dreams.
Sakura seems relieved that it was just a bad dream and nothing more but oh girl, oh sweetie. Glad Syaoran is there to remind her that THIS COULD BE A PREMONITION, GURL!
It’s not that it was Syaoran all along, but more like something will happen that will make Syaoran become that. That something will ultimately be related to protecting Sakura, of course. Unless Sakura is able to do something that would change that and thus avoid that future, of course.
In that last page, Syaoran looks ominous and Sakura looks like oh shit.
There is just no way this is ending with 10 volumes unfortunately. 12 volumes, here we go.

I LOOOVE the cover for volume 9! I was missing this style for her costumes, I’m so glad it’s back!

I also think this might be indicating we’re approaching the final battle or the development of the climax? Usually recaps and “let’s make a review of the situation” scenes lead up to the climax, because after long time you have to have well present in mind all that happened. But yes, YAY for Syaoran finally being in the know about the dreams. It was about time!

I also think this might have been done by Sakura…How many living magicians with enormous powers has the series introduced us to? Excluding Eriol, we just see Kaito and Sakura as the most powerful ones. And come oooon, it’d be such a CLAMP-y plot twist.

HAHA I could *almost* hear Ohkawa laughing her ass off behind that scene. “I’m gonna leave them holding their breath for a couple of pages”.
WE ALL thought Sakura might have stopped the scene….luckily it didn’t work that way, hahaha.

My personal interpretation is that the card attached itself to the recording the moment Sakura thought that “Tomatte!!”, in fact the recording looks disturbed, like it was stopped on a VHS recorder…It was born and captured very quickly. But yes, trust nothing and no one, at this point.

Yes, I think so too. I also hope Syaoran will take the chance next chapter to start confessing to Sakura that he came to Japan after the premonition his mother had. SAKURA NEEDS TO KNOW. And maybe we’ll find out more about Yelan and her great clan. Also I love how Syaoran looks deadass ominous sometimes, hahah.
Yes, by this chapter is definitely clear the final volume count will be 12, like the original series! I’m sorry for you, you’ll have to endure a little longer XDDDD

That’s what I think, too. Although we’ve been thinking like that for a while. However, yes, whenever CLAMP go back to the origins and events that took place in the first volumes, we are heading towards the ending.

hmmmm you’re right about that. It was HD 4K resolution and then it was like VHS. I guess that’s the effect they were trying to achieve.

Yes. They chose to replicate the number of volumes instead of the number of chapters, it seems. It makes total sense a series of 12 + 12.

Sakura’s the first person who comes to mind, but the dragon has always been associated with Kaito and the Association (we’ve seen it during all his flashbacks). And we know Kaito wants to combine his powers with Sakura somehow to save Akiho…
If Sakura had managed to stop Syaoran from seeing who was under the hood, I would have thrown a chair or something. 😂 I was relieved to see him shoot down Sakura’s attempts to avoid confronting the situation over and over again. This is the clearest confirmation yet that Sakura’s struggling with a deep sense of denial, which I’ve wondered about ever since that cheesecake-baking scene all the way back in Vol. 1. Just putting her head down and doing her best with whatever comes isn’t going to work this time.

Kero’s been so useless this whole series, I’m half-expecting him to have been a card all along. But seriously speaking, maybe Sakura will be more critical of her surroundings from here on out? She’s already picking up that something is wrong with Akiho, it’s only a matter of time before she starts suspecting Kaito, too.

We’ve come up to the point where Sakura’s crossed the boundary she originally wasn’t supposed to cross: she’s seeing visions of the future without being able to control it. (Eriol, do you have something to say about this? Where are you? We last saw you sitting in bed and plotting over a year ago.) Fujitaka’s talk about “reverse dreams” reminds me of how Clow told Sakura in TRC that she could change the future she saw in her dreams. I know you’re not big on this, but are we finally going to get that Sakura-Clow connection out in the open?

Yeah, I remember the dragon being directly associated with Kaito. But considering the MCF’s height, it’s either Akiho or Sakura and Akiho is the most obvious choice so I think we could end up seeing some twist where it’s actually Sakura doing that, with Kaito being involved, as you said.
Kero’s been so useless this whole series, I’m half-expecting him to have been a card all along.
LOL? So true. His scenes have become annoying to me to the same degree as Mokona=Modoki (unpopular opinion here). He is comic relief and nothing else.
CLAMP sure are not saving energy on creating cards…

No, Alex, it’s worse than that. 😅 I was hoping for Sakura to be able to talk to whatever’s left of Clow’s spirit somehow, since he’s pretty much the only character we know who’s had the same exact problem. (If CLAMP suddenly turns around and says, “Actually, Akiho’s mother/Nadeshiko had the same problems!,” then I’m going to cry.)
At the very least, it would be good if someone in the comic explicitly pointed out that Sakura’s not only suffering from the same “symptoms” Clow did, but she’s also trying to cope with it the same way (keeping up a smile, not being open to her loved ones because she doesn’t want to burden them, etc.). The story’s kind of danced around the subject.

For some reason I thought you liked them. Maybe because of their relationship with Clow but yeah, they are so not that funny and quite annoying, actually.

If CCS is getting near to the end, what would be the next manga to resume? xxxHolic was left on a cliphanger pretty crude if i recall well.

I’m afraid it’s not just you… I definitely think Clear Card didn’t need to be 12 volumes, so sometimes the pacing seems really slow.
If CCS is getting near to the end, what would be the next manga to resume? xxxHolic was left on a cliphanger pretty crude if i recall well.
Often times I think about that xD The easiest and most likely choice would be XXXHOLiC. But I hope it will be one of the other works on hiatus, too!
