CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION: XXXHOLiC #17 & #18 covers

The covers of XXXHOLiC #17 and #18 for the CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION edition have been announced!

They will be released on April 6. They can be ordered via Amazon Japan (volume 17, volume 18).

My guesses were half-right! We have older Doumeki on the cover of 17 but we don’t have an older Kohane on the cover of volume 18. Instead, we have Yaobikuni, becoming one of the few selected yokai to make it to the covers.

My bet for volume 19 now is Watanuki all by himself, or maybe with older Kohane? xD

Only one volume left for XXXHOLiC now. Volume 19 will come out on May 6th.

XXXHOLiC Rei will not be released immediately after. Instead, the next CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION series will be Tokyo Babylon, to be released by Kadokawa.

Really excited about this! This will coincide with CLAMP’s 33rd Anniversary. They did a special feature by the time of their 20th Anniversary.

And the interview is likely the one that Nanase Ohkawa-sensei mentioned a couple of weeks ago on her twitter:

Needless to say I’m very excited about this! First CLAMP interview in 6 years!

Guest post: CLAMPdown – A Kickstarter Project

Hi there,

My pen name is Ian Wolf, and I am a manga critic from England, currently working for Anime UK News. I am also autistic, work in the comedy industry, and have worked in TV as a quiz show question writer.

During the recent pandemic, I decided to combine my two passions by writing a comedy book about CLAMP, which Chibi Yuuto has been kind enough to fact check, along with Lucy and Robin from the podcast CLAMPcast in Wonderland. As it is about CLAMP, and I wrote during Britain’s numerous Covid-19 lockdowns, it is entitled CLAMPdown.

CLAMPdown is not a normal guide to the world of manga. As someone who is in the world of comedy, I decided to take a personal, comedic approach to it, using humour to educate those who know little about manga in hope that the work of CLAMP might be their first stepping stone into the medium. For example, people may take an in-depth look as to how Magic Knight Rayearth shaped modern isekai manga. I write an entire appendix explaining over 50 car references in Rayearth, a series that has no actual cars in it.

I am currently trying to fund my book via Kickstarter. My target is £2,800 (around US$ 3,700). Rewards range from credits in the book, ebooks, signed print copies, and even online preview readings. If I achieve my goal, I plan to add an extra stretch goal to fund an audiobook as well. The deadline to fund the book is 16.00 on 31st March UK time – which is midnight on 1st April Japanese time, to coincide with CLAMP Day.

If you want to get more of an idea of what the book is like, you can my interview on CLAMPcast in Wonderland, or visit my Twitter account @clampdownbook, where you will some early extracts including a draft of the entire first chapter, covering RG Veda.

Thanks for reading, and thanks to Chibi Yuuto for both fact checking my book and for allowing me to write this post.

Cheers,

Ian Wolf

New XXXHOLiC Live Action movie trailer

Asmik Ace released today a new, one-minute long trailer for the XXXHOLiC live-action movie adaptation directed by Mika Ninagawa:

“Habit” performed by the band Sekai no Owari has been announced as the movie’s main theme song.

Moreover, a new official poster was announced:

(C)2022 映画「ホリック」製作委員会 (C)CLAMP・ShigatsuTsuitachi CO.,LTD./講談社

Lastly, with the release of the new trailer and poster, the official website has been completely renewed, so make sure to check it out!

Source: XXXHOLiC_Movie twitter.

We get to see some of the clients in the trailer, such as “Misaki” (who is the lady with the habit of lying) as well as Spider Lady and the original character Akagumo. But we don’t get to see Neko Musume, Zashiki Warashi or any other clients (I think?).

It seems like there will be a lot of action taking place in Tokyo, as expected from Mika Ninagawa. You can see the iconic Shibuya 109 building in one of the scenes.

I am not sure if the theme song fits XXXHOLiC. I am not familiar with the band. Of course I would love it to be Suga Shikao the one performing the theme song, but I didn’t think he would be chosen.

The last scene in the trailer looks beautiful and perhaps it gives us an indication of how much from the original story the movie will cover.

The visuals look good. The trailer looks a bit too heavy on the CGI, but maybe they chose these scenes purposely for the trailer to cause an impact in the audience. It also feels very action-based, a bit too much for XXXHOLiC, but again, it might be the selection of scenes they picked.

All that said, the trailer did its job to make me wanna see the movie!

Card Captor Sakura Clear Card arc #12 cover and release information

Card Captor Sakura Clear Card arc volume 12 will be released on April 1st, 2022. This time, the special edition will come with a set of playing cards featuring art from Card Captor Sakura. The “Joker” card will feature a new illustration drawn by CLAMP. The cards can be stored in a book-like case that will come with the manga.

The set comes with 52 playing cards (13 cards of each suit: hearts, clubs, diamonds, and spades) + 2 joker cards, making 54 cards in total.

The cards are a little bigger than the typical trump cards, therefore the illustrations can better appreciated.

Here are pictures of the volume cover and the special edition extras:

The price for the special edition is 2,970 yens and it is available for pre-order at Amazon Japan.

CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION: XXXHOLiC #15 & #16 covers

The covers of XXXHOLiC #15 and #16 for the CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION edition have been announced!

They will be released on March 4. They can be ordered via Amazon Japan (volume 15, volume 16).

I’m so glad the Oden Fox got its cover! It makes perfect sense!

And as expected, Watanuki on the cover of volume 16, given that this is the volume where “Rou” begins.

Really interesting how they have kept it 100% XXXHOLiC, not using the Tsubasa characters.

What’s next for volumes 17-19? Possibly older Doumeki and older Kohane? We never saw older Himawari so I don’t think she is an option. Is Watanuki getting the 19th cover alone?

These covers are so gorgeous!

Here’s the upcoming release schedule for XXXHOLiC:

April 6th 2022: volumes 17 & 18
May 2022: volume 19 & ?

XXXHOLiC Rei Official Comic Guide announced (Updated)

CLAMP and Kodansha are releasing a comic guide for XXXHOLiC Rei in April.

Entitled XXXHOLiC Rei Official Comic Guide (XXXHOLiC 戻 公式コミックガイド) the book will come out on April 20, costing 1000 yens.

The information comes from Kodansha‘s schedule of comics for April.

Source: Kodansha.

The timing ties in nicely with the end of XXXHOLiC‘s run in CLAMP PREMIUM COLLECTION and the live-action movie release. But what about the manga? Is it coming back? But is it wise to release a guide book when there is more material coming? Unless there will be another guide in the future?

Update: Here’s the cover for it:
