For the first time since XXXHOLiC Rei returned, we have a chapter without a title page! So it’s not a “rule” to always have a title page this time around. On one hand, we don’t get a pretty monochrome illustration, but on the other hand, we get an extra page of actual story progress.

Lots of female characters in this chapter! Mokona-sensei sure worked a lot more in this one than the previous one.

It’s been a while since we last saw Yaobikuni, and Spider Lady for that matter. Although we did see that title page a few chapters ago with the two of them. So that title page was hinting that the two of them hang out together? I love how the two divas are drinking wine and gossiping about the yokai world, apparently in Spider Lady’s nest.

We learn that the Fuuri eats spiders and for that reason, the Fuuri and the Spider Lady don’t get along very well. I guess it makes sense since raccoons (which is usually used to represent the Fuuri) eat spiders.

The two conversations — the one with Watanuki and Seoritsu-hime at the shop’s backyard, and the with the Spider Lady and Yaobikuni at the Spider Lady’s nest — are happening at the same time.

We’re back at the scene with the Fuuri, Doumeki and Kudakitsune. The Fuuri tells Doumeki that it has what Watanuki needs and we are then taken back to a conversation held at the shop between the client and her deceased husband and Watanuki — so is the thing the Fuuri has related to this client? I did wonder for which of the many “cases” would this thing be helpful for.

Still in the flashback scene with the client, Watanuki explains to her that her husband might have dropped his “soul” and that in some areas the they refer to it as “mabui”, the essence of life. A body without its soul becomes unstable and may bring misfortune and illnesses to those around it. If the soul is not returned to the corpse, it might bring chaos and tragedy to the family and friends.

The client confirms that indeed her husband is from an area in which the soul is referred to as “mabui” and the thing her husband is looking for (in case you don’t remember, he comes back every night looking for “something”) might as well be his lost “mabui”.

We’re taken back to Doumeki, Kudakitsune and the Fuuri, which seems to have the “mabui”. So indeed this is linked to the client with the deceased husband!

The vase Doumeki brought with him reacts by the mention of it by the Fuuri, and Watanuki (who is watching and listening from a distance) confirms that it’s the real deal.

We learn that the vase that Doumeki took from Haruka’s warehouse is indeed meant to be used to “store” the client husband’s lost soul and put it back where it belongs. We also learn that in case the vase breaks, Watanuki has a backup plan: the “garden” full of lotus flowers at the shop’s backyard is supposed to act like an altar — aha! so that’s the reason for all those lotus flowers that weren’t there before!

The Fuuri agrees that it’s the equivalent price for the “mabui”, but I am not sure what exactly is the price her… is it the vase? But I thought the vase would be used to store and carry the “mabui”? Maybe we’ll have an explanation next chapter.

It seems like they close the deal but back at the shop Watanuki is interrupted by the Zashiki Warashi lookalike!! Good! It’s about time we see some new development about this subplot.

All the sub-plots are making some progress in this chapter! At least we have some answer that the Fuuri and the vase seem to be related to the client and the deceased husband. I wouldn’t be surprised though if it turns out everything else is also correlated..

One last thing, my friend Thiago Peres (who helps me by providing me the chapter translations) pointed out to me that the term “mabui” is used by the Ryukyuan religion and that the last time we had a reference to this religion was in Tsubasa WoRLD CHRoNiCLE – Nirai Kanai.

12 pages for this second chapter of volume 6. 30 pages so far for volume 6.

Chapter 67 will come out on November 3rd.

  1. Thanks for another review, dear!<3
    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Seeing Spider Lady always makes me smile from ear to ear.
And I can’t thank Thiago Peres enough for helping you keep us updated. ❤
Now let me go reread Nirai Kanai to see how it may be connected to these plots.
