Such a beautiful color page with Lillie! Definitely one of my favorites from Clear Card.

This might sound redundant but at this stage in the story, I expected this chapter to be more eventful. Yet, not much has happened. I am sure some will disagree but the biggest plot gear that moved was Sakura regaining her memories.

Last chapter I was wondering whether this reality Sakura had also been a Card Captor and all of that and we learn in this chapter that yes, despite the fact that Akiho is her twin sister, in this reality Sakura still captured all the Clow cards and transformed them all in Sakura cards alright. All the guardians are there, she even tells Akiho about her magic, who reacts in the best possible way, of course.

The only thing missing from this reality seem to be the new cards and Kaito himself. Except for his pocket watch, which somehow managed to be in the girls great-grandfather’s house. It even has the same cracks from the one that belonged to Kaito. So far, this seems to be the only thing that connects this reality with the other other. Actually, no, there is something else too…

We learn that back in the “other reality”, Sakura and Syaoran had an idea to leave the RECORD card recording everything at some point. I can’t remember exactly from which chapter this scene takes place, but I seem to remember that CLAMP left this cue somewhere (does anyone know?). I am guessing it was at some point later in the story where Sakura and Syaoran were starting to connect some dots. Then, another scene that was left as a cue is revealed, the one with Momo talking to Sakura’s guardians in her bedroom.

Momo knew that the RECORD card was hidden there and sent a message to the Sakura from this reality, because Momo knew this would happen in the future. Momo also used the crown she had (which, as you may or may not remember, used to the Lillie’s ring) to prevent the RECORD card from disappearing in this new reality where Sakura and Akiho are sisters, allowing Sakura to see the message when time was right. So the pocket watch and the RECORD card are so far the only two things that connect both realities.

So we had another combo of two mysteries solved at once: what was that scene with Momo and the guardians all about and what was the purpose of Lillie’s ring (Momo’s crown).

Sakura was “triggered” to remember that she had an important magic to summon after Akiho repeated the exact same words spoken by her mother last chapter which basically said that we are what we are based both on what we can and cannot do. Remember that Lillie told Sakura in the dream that Sakura and one important magic to summon (she was referring to the RECORD card). Then, with a little (non-magical) help from Akiho, Sakura was able to “remember” that she had to summon the RECORD card. Nice twin sisters synchronicity here.

Along with the preventing the RECORD card from disappearing after Kaito used the forbidden magic, the ring also allowed Sakura to regain all of her memories. I am assuming it was the ring, but it could be Momo’s own magic (it’s funny cause neither Momo nor the ring were there, since Sakura was watching a recording, technically). If it was the ring, it was very similar to Larg’s ring from XXXHOLiC, which also contained memories.

So now this Sakura know everything, and hugging Akiho while crying, Sakura vows to bring back that which they cannot lose. (Kamui much?)

Big question that remains for me is what will happen to this reality. Will it become the new canon and from now on Sakura will have a twin sister? If so, again: what happens to Nadeshiko and Lillie? Who are their mother? Or will Sakura do something that will make this reality disappear and we’ll go back to the previous, usual reality where they are not twins?

Now, with only 3-4 chapters remaining, Sakura knows everything for REALZ. It only took her 73 chapters.

One thought on “Card Captor Sakura – Clear Card arc – Chapter 73

  1. I agree – this one felt a bit filler-y after last time’s exposition dump! However I am really enjoying the nods to themes in other CLAMP works (I’ve actually never commented before, though I’ve been following for 10+ years, but wanted to share this!).

Preparing my tinfoil hat here – but the introduction of Sakura being a dreamseer and the importance of dreams as prophecy is very Holic/TRC. In fact I’m pretty sure someone said in a recent chapter that ‘everything is Hitzusen’ (cue Leo diCaprio pointing at the TV meme). Sakura (like Clow) being so powerful that her wishes create magical disturbances, a time wizard, the idea of ‘equal exchange’…

Though it is probably CLAMP inserting some fun Easter eggs around, my theory is that this Sakura gives up her star staff in order to restore the original reality. After all, who best to fix a time magic based mess than the Time Witch herself? Plus she has the new ‘dreams’ staff – if it sticks around in a restored reality – and she would always prioritise her friend’s happiness over it.

As a complete sidenote, while I’ve been a little disappointed with Clear Card as a whole, I love the symbolism throughout. Last chapter I’m pretty sure the cover of Sakura in a dark ‘river’ surrounded by flowers was inspired by Millais’ painting of Ophelia from Hamlet who has a big flower theme in the play. She has a very affecting scene in which (during throes of madness) she hands out wildflowers, citing the symbolic reasoning of each one (e.g. daisies for purity, violets for modesty). I wonder if the trees coming alive was inspired by Hamlet too…?
