The silence is over and the story is at last resumed! CLAMP have mentioned on previous twitter spaces that they will take no more breaks until the end of Clear Card, which makes me believe we are likely embarking on the final volume of Clear Card

We all thought at first that Chapter 65 was going to be the first chapter of volume 14. Turns out we were wrong and that chapter will be included in volume 13 as its last chapter. Which makes Chapter 66 the first chapter of volume 14.

Mermaid Sakura on the color spread, holding a crystal, looking rather melancholic. If this volume really is the last one, do you think this spread is enough “final volume” material? The composition is a little similar to the spread of volume 12 of the original series. But Sakura is flying and looking way more cheerful on that one…

So, picking up from where we left off in Chapter 65, we have Syaoran continuing to somewhat play his role as the Cat after he found out that “Sakura” is actually The Mirror. He seems very determined to keep pretending and playing along.

They arrive to a floating castle with, of course, crystals at the bottom. We still have to find out what’s up with all the crystals in Clear Card. Although it’s a castle, it reminds me a lot of an amusement park, reminding me of the climaxes of CLOVER (the Fairy Park) and the second movie of CCS. In fact, the castle’s architecture and motif (chessboard floor, high windows, art nouveau) remind me of CLOVER.

The intense gaze that Syaoran and “Sakura” exchange… he is thinking that he should play along, and so he does. Notice how the font used in Syaoran’s speech is different than the “regular” one, implying that he is speaking the lines of the Cat from the play and playing the “role”. This is mostly noticeable in the Japanese scans. It’s not so clear on the other translated versions.

Then, the scene changes to Yelan, who is in Hong Kong, and Eriol, who is in England — wearing his Clow clothes, mind you. They are using magic to speak to each other as though they were FaceTiming with each other. What a lovely surprise to see these two. I was wondering last chapter if Eriol and Kaho would join the party, and although so far it doesn’t look like they will, at least we got to see them.

We learn that it was Yelan the one who cast the spell on Syaoran (and only on him, I think) that would shock him if he touches Sakura SO THAT when this time came, he would know that it wasn’t Sakura, but The Mirror! Somehow, she foresaw this very moment and cast the spell so that Syaoran would rely on his senses instead of reasoning. Well, guess what? It worked.

That was so clever. Bravo, CLAMP! It was all for the sake of this very moment, and it makes perfect sense! Another mystery that we got a solution for so we can scratch that off our list, too.

Yelan saying that this was her being “gentle” is priceless. So many layers to that woman ♡

Yelan and Eriol go on about the fact that Kaito was able to steal a card from Sakura means that her powers have not yet reached their full capacity. It’s like CLAMP saying “wait, she’s not done yet”. And then they go on about how Kaito always seems to be one step ahead of them and they don’t understand why given that he can’t see the future (Yelan knows as much).

And then, Kaho suggests that he might be turning back time every time something goes out of hand. It’s a very logical thing to think about and Kaho used to teach math at the Tomoeda school so it makes sense that she would think of something as logical as that! Plus, she has moon powers too.

I really like how Ohkawa-sensei is finding a way to give a “role” to each character. There are a lot of characters in Clear Card and one concern I had is whether each of them would have their importance or if some of them would remain like a “dead weight”. Well, we’ve seen in this chapter that both Yelan and Kaho have given their “contributions” to the story.

What about you, Eriol? Yes I am looking at you… What will you do? xD

Judging by Eriol’s words that there is nothing else to be done, I am guessing that this is it for him? Not sure if he will be doing anything else to save the day…

Big Eriol/Clow energy:

I don’t know what they will do with the information that Kaho brought to them, but it did surprise me that none of the 3 of them seem to know what Kaito wants. At this point, only Momo and Kaito himself do.

We still need to know what exactly Yelan saw in the future that made her ask Syaoran to come back to Japan sooner. Maybe we will learn that through Syaoran…

Back to Syaoran and “Sakura”, they arrive to a garden that is very similar (actually it’s like the same) to the garden we see in Kaito and Akiho’s memories. The PROMISE card, which is shaped after Yukito, is there. “Sakura” points out that she feels that garden is very important to someone.

Syaoran is worried and goes on with his part as the Cat telling “Alice” that they should keep going. Before they go, “Yukito” tells her not to forget about the promise that she made, to which “Alice” replies “to whom?”

On that very moment, Yukito’s eyes looked a lot like Yue’s. Was that Yue speaking from the real world? Was he talking to Sakura, The Mirror, or to Kaito himself…? This was all created by Kaito, after all.

They finally go inside the castle. Where CHOICE and KINDNESS, shaped after Touya and Fujitaka respectively, are standing at each side and Akiho in the middle, as the Red Queen, as though they are the knights protecting her.

What’s interesting is that Akiho is still playing her role, despite the fact that this clearly is no longer the play and the real world. So far, the only “real” person was Syaoran. Everything and everyone else was a manifestation of a card. What about this Akiho? Is it really her? I have doubts… Her font is also the “play” font, implying she is following a “script” or not really her. Again, this is mostly noticeable in the Japanese version.

The only two human-shaped cards that haven’t showed up yet are REWIND (Syaoran) and DREAMING (Mysterious Cloaked Figure).
