News from CLAMP FESTIVAL 2012

The first installment of the CLAMP FESTIVAL 2012 was held today in Tokyo. Here are a few announcements that were made at the event:

– Suga Shikao will be in charge of XXXHOLiC TV Drama’s theme song;
– The DVD and Blu-Ray of “BLOOD-C The Last Dark” will be released on February 27, 2013;
– ARIKA announced a new social game for mobile phones based on Card Captor Sakura. There will be new illustrations drawn by CLAMP for it. Here’s the promotional video for it:

There is an official site for it: http://www.arika.co.jp/sakura.

The news about Suga Shikao singing the XXXHOLiC TV Drama theme song was so expected, and I couldn’t be happier about it. This will be the 7th Suga Shikao song used for a XXXHOLiC adaptation. They should release a compilation =)

  1. Thanks for news and link to the promo video! But this video is only 23sec long, I think it’s better if you put directly the link to the 50sec complete version (this link is included in both the official website and the description of the youtube vid above): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucpzMngAb_M I actually didn’t notice it until I went to the *simplified* official website ^^;

    I’ve been wondering why there was suddenly new illustrations of CCS (Clamp Pia & 2013 calendar) after so many years, and this announcement gave me the answer.
    That said, in the video, more than new artworks, it’s more like colored ones just like the ones in Clamp in CardLand, so I won’t be holding my breath just yet haha~

    I hope the xxxholic drama will be a success and yey! A new song from Suga Shikao! 😀

    • Now that I think about it, if they keep going like this, we might just witness the birth of the first colored Clamp manga with CCS, they colored so many panels already (and are clearly coloring more from what I see) so they might as well finish it all up! XD XD Well, extremely unlikely to happen ever, I know, but the thought just crossed my mind and I thought “hey, why not?”, I never thought of having a colored Clamp manga before now.

      • I didn’t notice I had the wrong video up. Thanks for pointing that out!

        As for new CLAMP drawings, that’s what the video says. It might be just one new illustration, but there must be at least one new illustration on the way.

        That’s so true! hahaha

            • The CLAMP in CARDLAND paintings looked like copic too.

              You’re the CCS expert here, are we sure that all of these illustrations that appear in this video were taken off the manga? They did a pretty decent work removing all the speech bubbles.

              • You are right, I also thought the CiCardland paintings were entirely done with copic when I first saw them, but they were so many of them that sometimes I wondered if I wasn’t wrong, how could Clamp deal with it all?
                And looking more closely at them, one after another, you start realizing that while the coloring is beautifully done, it was closer to anime like cell shading than traditional hand coloring with copic.
                There might be some of them made with copic though, I confess I do not remember everything right now.

                These are previews of the panels colored for this game:

                It is copic coloring. Else, I’d really like them to give me lessons on how to do that with PS!

                And I have no answer for the bubbles; the thing is thought that I don’t know what kind of material does the Clamp hide inside their studio and archives? Do they actually have panels void of bubbles lying there? Or did they simply chose the pictures in which it was the easiest to get ride of said bubbles?

                The panels I’ve personally seen up until now are from the mangas, but some might have possibly been redrawn to make it look better: take the one with Sakura wearing her final outfit in volume 11, the exact same thing is in the manga, but you can feel that the colored version is…better, more details, things like that; but still, it’s so close to the black and white version that I wonder if they didn’t just enhance it in some way or another.

                • Well, CLAMP didn’t color the CiC drawings, that’s for sure. It was somebody else’s work.

                  And although it looks like copic, I would say it’s not. It must be CG done by a very talented person. There are softwares that mimics manga coloring style.

                  CLAMP draws the bubbles within the drawing, as part of the drawing. That being said, again I think this was heavy Photoshop work. They might choose the easiest to get rid of the bubble and easiest to “redraw”.

                  I don’t think CLAMP touched those (CiC or this new CCS game), at all. This is all someone else’s job.

                    • It’s indeed very likely Clamp did not much for CiC, said it was done on PS by Nekoi but I don’t know if it’s a guess from her part or actual information she’s got hold into.

                      You might also be right for the actual colored panels for the game, but I’ll still let open the possibility of them being made with copic, they are very different from the CiC cards and the closest I’ve seen to Clamp’s actual artworks’ style after all; the BGs are another story though, definitely CG.

                    • Nekoi’s CG style is different than the one in CiC.

                      Compare the NEW illustrations they did for CiC, those yes, were all CG by Nekoi. Notice how different the coloring is from the regular cards.

                      As for this new game, it’s a different team, so that’s why the coloring looks different than CiC.

                      Coloring with copic takes time, usually 2 days to color a spread. I don’t think they would color these cards (but that’s my opinion).
