CLAMP x GACKT live stage collaboration (Updated)

It’s been announced today that CLAMP will collaborate with singer GACKT on an original live stage project entitled MOON SAGA 義経秘伝 (MOON SAGA Yoshitsune Hiden). GACKT will provide the original draft and star as the leading part, while CLAMP will be in charge for the story.

Starting in July 2012, with live stage performances in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka.

Staff list

Starring/Drafting: GACKT
Original work: CLAMP
Organizers: Kodansha
Planning: Bon sales, DMM.com, DY Media Partners Hakuhodo
Cooperation: ISE, GORDIE ENTERTAINMENT, PYROTECHNIST
Production: MOON SAGA Stage Production Committee

An official website to promote the MOON SAGA project has been launched: http://www.dmm.com/moonsaga

Yesterday, pictures of flowers sent by CLAMP to GACKT for one of his concerts appeared on the web.

WOOOOW this is so COOL! Because this is the not only the first time CLAMP collaborates with superstar GACKT, but also the first time CLAMP creates a story for a live stage! I think this is going to be something extremely interesting to see! I hope there will be DVD and Blu-ray releases for this later!

Gotta love CLAMP exploring new medias!

Update: Comic Natalie has more info and the first artwork by CLAMP!

According to the website, prior to the beginning of the live performances, a manga series will run in a Kodansha magazine! Other media adaptations such as anime, games and movie are also planned!

Rough plot summary provided by ANN:

Gackt will play the title role of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a general who was critical to the Genpei War that inspired the literary classic Heike Monogatari (Tale of the Heike). The play’s version of Yoshitsune will possess strange powers.

NEW CLAMP MANGA!!! =DD

  1. bad news ?

I think that Clamp is less and less interested in drawing manga, it’s a bad news for their unfinished works ( except lawful drug ). I hope that will be not like Blood-c.

I don’t see it that way. I think they are exploring new medias and I like that. In fact, they are often credited as a “creative group” instead of a “mangaka group”.

And it’s not like this is going to take a lot of their time. They will provide a story and maybe design some original characters, but that’s it. I don’t think this will stop them from drawing manga, which is their primary activity.

I agree with Chibi Yuuto, Clamp have been involved in many kind of projects beside manga all along (Rg Veda anime, Tokyo Babylon live action, Magic Knight Rayearth anime, X movie, Card Captor Anime, xxxHolic anime, Taubasa and xxxHolic OVA, Code Geass chara design, etc) they never left the manga and even have a few series running.

With Blood-C and Moon Saga, the only difference is they are not the original work creator, but they have been in similar implication in some past project. No to forget the 1993 Rex projet in which they were just in charge of the manga adaptation and not the whole story.

I don’t see this as a change, more like a return to normal from the xxxHolic and Tsubasa overload.

Exactly! I don’t know about others but I love that about them, the fact that they explore other types of creative outlets =)

Besides, all these collaborations are beneficial for creators like them, where new ideas could be born. It’s like a food-chain, everything is connected.

Not to mention that GACKT-only fans will get to know CLAMP’s work =) and all the publicity around might bring CLAMP to collaborate with other artists as well.

I hope Namie Amuro sees this… she is friends with GACKT (they are both Okinawa-born) hahahaha!

  2. Hi, Chibiyuuto!

-a manga series will run in a Kodansha magazine! Other media adaptations such as anime, games and movie are also planned!-

*Dies* OMGasdasdasdasdkjashdkjsdfhksdjfhsdf HOW EXCITING! BUT!…I just hope it won’t be like Blood-C which looked f*ing promising, but ended up being quite disappointing (well, I can’t say much about it since I’ve just watched two episodes)

I can’t wait to see what this is all about, but it looks BIG and I love that! (=
Thanks for the news, as always…and bring on 2012! (screw you end of the world…)

  3. The art look so cool, I feel a good vibe from this project. ^^

So, there will be a manga, a live show, a anime and a movie (live action or anime?), I wonder how much Clamp will be involved in all these pet projects (beside from the manga).

Although this project is not out of Clamp’s brains, GACKT is the one who provided the original draft, I expect to feel a definite Clamp’s twist here, especially the macabre poetic Clamp side which I like the most. ^^

So Kodansha is going to publish the manga, I wonder which magazine. Is GACKT more a girl thing or a boy thing? If it’s a boy thing, Young Magazine could do the trick or even the special shounen magazine like the end of xxxHolic. If it’s a girl thing, the Best Friend maybe…

    • I love the art too! It feels so dark! It’s the dark series we’ve been all waiting for! It’s GACKT so of course it’s dark!

I don’t know if it’s going to be a live action. From what I understood it’s an anime movie, but it could mean either one.

I wish Ohkawa would write a song for the play… but I don’t know if GACKT would “let” her do it or even if she wants to do it (remember our confidence talk in the car? XD).

Yeah, but it looks like he might have come up with a rough plot, which is good because he seems very dramatic and tragic xD Can’t wait to see CLAMP diving into that universe.

I wonder which magazine. Is GACKT more a girl thing or a boy thing?

I think GACKT appeals to both boys and girls very strongly. Girls because they find him pretty and boys because they want to look like him xD I think it’s going to be a shounen magazine (because of sales appeal, due to the magnitude of this project).

Bessatsu is a good guess, or even Shounen Magazine, which is weekly, that would make the pacing quicker in order to have a good amount of material by the time the play begins.

      • I don’t think GACKT will let Ohkawa write a song, it would be as if GACKT draw a part of the manga. ^^;

Shounen Magazine might be a bit too young, especially since the cast will likely be all adult. Well, they might do a few kids characters in the lot, but I doubt they will be the main and I’m not sure a shounen Magazine series can do with a adult main character. Maybe even the Special Shounen Magazine wouldn’t work. Young Magazin would be better, or even the Morning (but that’s my long time wet dream, Clamp in the Morning ^^;). Maybe the Afternoon would work better, although it’s not a weekly, but at least some of the protagonists are adult (Mushishi comes to my mind).

          Sad but true!

I would like to see them in a new magazine, that’s for sure. I didn’t know about your Morning dream, I will cheer for that =)

We need the original texty in Japanese, weither it’s a gekijouban (anime) or a eiga (live action) is clearer than in English which both translate as movie. :/

            >> remember our confidence talk in the car? XD

            I hope she’ll write something in another project, she’s better than she gives herself credit for. ^^;

It’s just because there’s already three series that I like a lot in the Morning (Vagabond, Billy Bat and the drops of God), two of these are written by some of my favorite mangaka (Urasawa and Inoue), to have all my favorite in a single issue is just fangirl love overload. ^^

You have no idea how happy I am with my Sunday GX cover which figure both Arakawa (fullmetal alchemist’s author which did Raiden-18 in this magazine) and Clamp (for Kobato (kari) #6). ^^

Awww! Reminds me of the time when we had both X and Gouhou Drug in Asuka. Double CLAMP feature!

              • 映画化, eigaka, so that would be a live action, which is to be expected from a live show.

From what I heard, Vagabond is on hold right now (sound familiar to us Clamp freaks) because Inoue want to give more time to Real.

These were the good old times, just before our hearts were ripped out of our chest with X going on hiatus. T_T

  4. This may be a stretch, if it was GACKT who came up with the original plot, but…The title, “Yoshitsune Hiden”, uses the kanji for “Yoshitsune” is the same (making me assume referring to the same person) as Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune, a really famous and popular Japanese general…

Am I the only one thinking eventual Gate 7 tie-in? *shot* Okay, okay, but it would be cool if once it was all over, it happened…Though Yoshitsune admittedly wasn’t from the Sengoku period…

  5. What a mix! I think they fit each other, because Gackt also likes dramatic/tragic stuff (in his concerts, at least before, he always died once…) so they are going to be of the same opinion.

About songs, Gackt has sung stuff written by other people, such as the songs for Kamen Raider, so I wouldn’t really feel surprised if Ohkawa wrote something for him.

And about Gackt being for boys/girls, lately he is trying to appeal more to the masculine fans so I think this will be a seinen. Also the stuff he has been working lately (dramas, movies, etc.) is more aimed at men than girls.

  6. Wow, a manga about Minamoto clan? This should be interesting. It’ll be like revising everything I had to learn for my finals at uni, except it’ll be entertaining for once. xD

It seems that Gackt Kamui got his name from the X main character Kamui, perhaps he is just trying to show his love and admiration for CLAMP.
