XXXHOLiC◆Kei #4 Review

Yesterday I spent the whole day away and only now I could properly watch it and write the review. But the long awaited (for me, at least) episode scripted by Ohkawa is here! xD

– Yay the stylish backgrounds and patterns are back. I love those.
– Watanuki’s eyes are both blue, even though he swallowed half of Doumeki’s right eye in the previous episode. Hum. I wonder if there’s any meaning behind it or if the producers were just following the manga (in which Watanuki also had both eyes blue).
– Watanuki’s angry walk is amusing xD
– The colors of Yuuko’s clothes are horrible, again. Production IG has a terrible fashion taste xD
– She’s reading Young Magazine! The colors are so bright that it’s useless trying to avoid it. It’s pretty eye-catchy.
– Ohkawa cut Yuuko’s conversation about “Why do you like Himawari?” and “Why you don’t like Doumeki?”
– Street pole dimension passageway! xD Nice sequence.
– HAHAHA! LOVED the circus music when the Yumekai appears XD Perfect. Loved his voice, too, very fitting! He sounds old, like he’s been in this business for years.
– Ohkawa wrote a rather pervert side of the Yumekai that was not in the manga xD Funny scene xDD
– Haruka-san! Ha, I guess this is why Ohkawa wrote this episode, she wanted to write the one where Haruka appears for the first time xD
– Haruka’s seiyuu is the same as Doumeki’s, of course, Kazuya Nakai, and even though it’s the same person, he sounds quite different! Less like Doumeki, and more like Nakai himself, I’d would say. He sounds much kinder than Doumeki, too.
– Ah, look, Watanuki’s right eye changed its color when he thought about it. I wonder if it’ll change its colors at random times whenever Watanuki thinks about it…

Another good episode. Again I’m glad the animation seems to be a lot more, how should I say it, stabilized, than last season, I hope it’ll stay like this for the rest of this season. This episode marks the introduction of the Yumekai and Haruka. Both very well represented, specially the Yumekai. I loved his sequence, most of it thanks to the brilliant soundtrack. It’s a pity we’ll probably never hear it again, unless the Yumekai makes another appearance in the future.

Next episode begins the Kohane arc, I’m very curious about her seiyuu. The next episode will be written by Ohkawa as well. Ah, I wish all episodes were written by her…

¡Feliz cumpleaños, clow_shirow! ^__^ Here I wish you all the best for the rest of your many years to come (and I also hope this episode will be an easy one to take care of for you and your staff xD).

  1. I think that, when he is inside a dream, maybe both of his eyes stay on their normal color. And when he is living his usual life, he is with both of his eyes with mismatching colors.

… or is it the other way around? *confused*

    • You mean in the manga or anime?
Because in the manga he has his both eyes blues too, even when he’s not dreaming. Check the color pages of tank 10. We only see different eye colors in the color pages of tank 11 and forward.

  2. this episode was very hilarious, the yumekai was awesome!

watanuki made “madlen” cookies.. it reminded my that episode in “friends” where rachel hired a male nanny that made rose uncomfortable. the nnny made madlen cookies and rose said “why couldn’t he make manly cookies, like choclate-chips, with chunks.. no .. he had to make madlens ”

the yumekai was cute, I’m not a cutness fan, but when he moved his ears that was just too cute even to me..

haruka voice sounds just like yuuto’s voice from x tv , isn’t it? I thought it’s the same seyuu when I first heard him ^^.
and yes.. kohane’s very own episode, I’m too expecting it (ans I still hope they’ll mention if not show Rshaoran…)

HAHAHA I remember that episode xDDD I didn’t know they were the same kind of cookies, interesting xDDD

I liked the Yumekai too, loved his Osaka accent ^^

It’s quite similar, yeah, but it’s not the same seiyuu ^^

  3. First and foremost: Kyaaaaa!! Yumekai was adorable! And his song was so fitting (and it really stood out compared to the other HOLiC songs). Words cannot describe my happiness. Yumekai, admittedly, didn’t stand out in the manga for me, but he really did here.. hahaha ^^

And, its probably just me, but… I really liked all of the shadow work on this episode.. ^^; It seemed they used it alot compared to previous episodes…

Evil-Watanuki is terrible amusing.. hahahaha “Where’s the picture?!?!” hehe ^^

And finally: Kohane-chan is next episode! ^^ I can’t wait!

thank you for the review! ^^

WORD on it standing out compared to the other songs.

Really? I really didn’t notice, I’ll pay more attention to that next time ^^

      >Evil-Watanuki is terrible amusing.. hahahaha “Where’s the picture?!?!” hehe ^^

      Yes, but I thought he looked even crazier in the manga xD He wasn’t all that in the anime. Plus, we didn’t get to see him telling Doumeki about the picture. Maybe he’ll do it on the next episode ^^;

Thank you for your comment! Always appreciated!

  4. Hey, did anyone else notice the Kanji/kana mismatch in the title of the next episode? The name of the episode is “Kohane”, but the kanji actually read Yuen, which means “acquaintance/relation/affinity/reason”.

Crazy thought: maybe they decided to go for an alternate spelling for Kohane’s name, since her powers are not related to Sakura’s feathers now. Or maybe I’m just reading too much into this… But unless I’m mistaken, this is the first time there has been a kanji/kana mismatch in an episode title, which is what got me wondering in the first place.

That’s pretty common in some animes nowadays. It’s something called ateji (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ateji). When you use different kanjis to write another word.

And it’s not really the first time they do it. For example, the “hanbun” episode also has a “mismatch”. Hanbun is written as “半分” but they wrote it as “朋分”.

  5. hglkjglk MY GOD!

    The episode was wonderful!

The Yumekai is perfect! More than his manga’s version, I think.
His character introduce two new song in the soundtrack. I really enjoy it!
When i saw him, I thought “Is he french?? (o__O)?”.
It’s his hat (un bérêt??), and the character theme which is like a Parisian song of the 19 century. (>__

I love the music when the Yumekai appear *w*
As amaterasuvani, I think about France immediately. This kind of Music, its appearance of “painter of the end of the XICth century”…It look french >w_< *

    • Currently I enjoy season 1 way more while the 1st didnt animate from the manga excatly It was able to be enjoyable without trying to lift every panel from the manga and was enjoyable in expanding and showing the characters progress in mostly one episode stories and doing it just right . I didnt like this episode that much actually its the first time Id say it wasnt on the level of any other episode of holic Ive ever seen .

It dragged on and I only liked the first half and thought that the young magazine was annoying . Its a seinen magazine and perverted at that and watanuki was really acting like a jerk at the end unlike the manga when it was funny and didnt show doumeki when he was young which in my opinon kind of made it more sexist . Mokona was also being a jerk and it felt like it and the end was not funny and yumekai was played off kind of plane. When you compare it to the other three its just no good and just ruined Holics streak of excellent episodes from the first to second season . My opinon of the other three are they were too much like the manga but still enjoyable and added but zashiki warashi and ame warashi
which was always a plus in the Holic anime that the manga didnt do. This anime gets a bad rep because there as no crossovers but It makes the series better that it focuses mainly on these charatcers without making you feel llike the crossovers are at times pointless and make holic stand on its own 2 feet . If the crossovers are needed they could just do one episode to tie it up together without making it feel messy . I hope the next ones better .

  7. ¡Muchas gracias! ^^
I’m so glad you remembered it and even you told me here and MSN, thanks a lot! *_*

Well, Yumekai did give us some work to do XD with its Osaka-den, but we managed to use it in our hand, translating its speech in “andaluz” XD (funny and great BGM demanded me to do that XDD).

    >Ohkawa cut Yuuko’s conversation about “Why do you like Himawari?” and “Why you don’t like Doumeki?”

Haven’t they used in next episode? I haven’t watched it yet, but it seemed as I could hear in preview of episode 5…

I liked this episode 4 a lot (much funnier than 3 before, of course ^^U), but I continue keeping second and third ones as my favourites *__*.
Now begins Kohane arc, and if Ohkawa is behind, it can be amazing *__*. What I still don’t get is how many episodes would Kei be? O_o 24 probably would be so much, but 13 are too few. I hope we could at least know how many episodes will be coming in first DVD on 25 June.

    • Oh I had to make a proper dedication ^___^

Hope you had a wonderful day!

      >translating its speech in “andaluz” XD

      Oh? How does that work?

      >Haven’t they used in next episode?

I just watched it yesterday and yes, she used it there xD

About the number of episodes, Amazon.co.jp lists 13 episodes, judging by the DVD running times. But that can change, I think. 13 is indeed way too few…

  8. I don’t quite follow the manga, so I’m not sure if this is accurate but maybe the different eye colors is because if his two eyes were different colors it’d kinda bring attention to him? Like people would question it or something…

I dono if that makes sense x_x

But Yumekai was very cute (:

  9. inserting myself in the conversation here…

hi, I loved this episode, and was wondering if anyone knew the song that plays when Watanuki wakes up and finds Haruka sitting on the porch? With lots of flute-sounding instruments and drums.

That would be great if anyone could tell me. I’m pretty sure it’s not of the XXXHolic soundfile…I’ve been looking everywhere for it!

Btw, I was really surprised that Watanuki treated Doumeki’s grandfather with respect. I was expecting him to be ranting and raving like he does with Doumeki. I’d chalk it up to his respect-your-elders Japanese sensibilities, but I like to think it’s more because of the respect that Haruka commands!
