CLAMP @ AX 2006 – Fan Panel

First we had a transcription of the Press Conference, and now we have a deeper look of the fan’s panel where around 5000 people attended.

I’m making this basing on two sites, this japanese one and this livejournal of user hoshisenshi, who did a very deep and detailed report, in which I shall make some quotes here.

Please notice that any kind of recording was forbidden, which means these reports were made using the memory of their authors, only. So the way the sentences are written might differ from what it was originally said, but the meaning is the same.

Of the 1000+ questions people submitted online, they narrowed them down to these ones:

Q: Are you going to continue with Kobato?
Ohkawa: Yes, the serialization will restart in Newtype by the Autumn.

Damn AX for losing a question for not being up-to-date >_>

Q: How much time is spent in the production of each chapter (20 pages)?
Ohkawa: The script takes 8 hours to be written, 12 hours to draw the storyboard and 2 days for the actual pages to be finished. However, when it comes to X, it takes 4 days to draw the pages.

This one is my favorite one of the whole lot. Thank you whoever submitted it (in fact, I kinda submitted one similar to this one O.o), I always wanted to know these numbers *-* So 4 days to draw 20 pages of X? Interesting…

Q: Do you write the story as you are serializing it or has it been decided since the beginning?
Ohkawa: The scripts are written one chapters at a time, but the end is decided from the start. Therefore, the end of Tsubasa and XXXHOLiC has already been decided.

Nothing that we didn’t know already……

Q: Why did you pick Syaoran as the main character of Tsubasa?
Ohkawa: Picking Syaoran was very natural because, usually, CLAMP’s works don’t have a very happy ending, and he came from a work that had a happy ending. Syaoran will have to go through a hard-time to get his happy ending in Tsubasa.

Nothing new about Syaoran. However, in my opinion, I think she means Tsubasa WILL have a happy ending, even though it won’t be easy for Syaoran to have it.

Q: Many of your works share the same world and are linked to each other, can you tell us more about it?
Ohkawa: For all our works except our fantasy works, everything occurs all in one universe. In the case of our fantasy worlds, we wanted a way to link these
worlds, and that is where Yuuko comes in in XXXHOLiC.

I guess X is among these fantasy works…

Q: How is decided who’s gonna take charge of scripting, storyboarding, drawing, toning, etc?
Ohkawa: It depends on the work. But the plot and script is always done by me. And in the case of XXXHOLiC, Mokona is often in charge of drawing the females while Nekoi is in charge of drawing the males.

Nothing new, just confirmed what I thought about XXXHOLiC.

Q: Which was the manga you had more fun while doing it?
Ohkawa: Many of our early manga ended tragically with characters dead, so I think Card Captor Sakura was a fun production.
Igarashi: Well, while we’re making manga, there’s always deadlines to meet, so usually it’s not until after that we like the work. But I think I had the most fun while working on Duklyon.
Nekoi: I think I enjoyed working on Duklyon the most as well.
Mokona: And unanimously, I agree on Duklyon as the most fun work we’ve done.

I can tell how they must had enjoyed themselves while making Duklyon XDDD

Q: Do you ever get so frustrated with a picture that you just crumple it and start from scratch?
Mokona: An artwork usually is never thrown away completely. Because I do a pencil drawing first, then ink it and color it, I can fix any errors in the pencil stage.
Igarashi: Nekoi likes to doodle a lot and throw away the papers, but we sometimes un-crumple them and submit them on our site.

LOL ! Though Mokona should doodle more often XD

Q: In TRC is there a theme of black and white, or yin and yang, or opposites attract with Kurogane and Fye? Is there a possibility of this pairing becoming official? (fans cheer)
Ohkawa: [laughs] Does the cheering mean there’s a desire for this pairing? [laughs] Well, we made Syaoran the main character and he’s still developing and maturing, so we wanted him to have adult companions. Kurogane is the one who is seen as ‘black’ and Fye as ‘white.’ Kurogane lives up to his name and likes to wear mostly black, and he is more straightforward, while Fye is more mysterious and represents white. And right now in the more recent Japanese chapter, Fye is in a tough spot…

They shall never confess it XDDD

Q: Where do you get inspiration for your stories/characters?
Igarashi: Deadlines are the best inspiration. (And this got a big cheer from the audience. XD) So it seems everyone has experienced this.

She answered the same thing, I think, in the press conference. Satsuki really hates deadlines XD

Q: Why has the artwork for your more recent works like TRC and XXXHOLiC become thinner and taller? (Which is still beautiful by the way.)
Ohkawa: Thank you, first of all. The style for XXXHOLiC was meant to be similar to the traditional Japanese ukiyo-e paintings, which are tall and thin, and because it crosses over with TRC, TRC had to have the same style.

LOVED the explanation ! Learn more about ukiyo-e paintings and notice the similarities.

Q: How did you all decide that you wanted to be manga-ka?
Ohkawa: Everyone excluding me was classmates in high school, and I was introduced through a mutual friend. We then got together to make doujinshi and we were discovered by various publishers.

Another old question…

Q: Why is Yuuko’s symbol the butterfly?
Ohkawa: (explains about how it’s based on Japanese symbolism and legends).

That’s it ! Again I’d like to point out that many parts of the interview were quoted from hoshisenshi‘s report, while others I typed myself.

Now the only thing left is to wait for the pictures *waits*…

But before leaving, I’d like to say my congratulations to my dear, funny and amazing translator friend, iamsocool12345-Jamie-chan ^___^ *glomps* Happy Anniversary ! I wish you much happiness !

        • Haha, when I saw that and they asked whether there was a desire for that pairing, I was like, “You mean they don’t know? What with all the innuendo they drop? Oh, come on.”

          • Maybe it was because it was USA fans >__> Unless they’re just really amused and like “ORLY???” XDDDDDD

I think with Japanese fans it’s more obvious, but often they’re completely different from American fans. (Like in Kyou Kara Maou XD ConYuu is WAY more popular with Japanese fans, but WolfYuu is most popular by far in USA fans) But the KuroFai fans actually outweigh the S+S fans in Japan too tho o__o Le gasp, KuroFai won over the cultural diferences/preferences XDDDD

            Like

            • Heehee…though it seems that there are a lot of American fans in the Japanese spirit over here. I talked to a Japanese fangirl and she sounded like half my friends. Not to mention some of that foreign (meaning us) doujin is damn scary. Though it could just be that we’re perverted bastards and will take any chance we can get?

They’re probably just feigning innocence. “What? What innuendo? We didn’t put in any innuendo, certainly not. Their incessant flirtation is all entirely platonic, I’m sure.” Yeah, you just keep telling yourself that.

              Like

              • Yeah, uh huh, suuuuure Clamp XD 4 women scheming together for years over manga? Several canon BL pairings already? Innuendo everywhere? Love themes integrated into it amongst tragedy all over the place? …Did I mention 4 women scheming together? There is no innocence XDDDDD

                Like

                • Psh. You can never put more than two talented women in the same room before they go all BL on your ass. Unless of course they are homophobic, which we know for a fact CLAMP is not. (Did that sound gramatically awkward to you?)

But guh. KuroxFay will probably never be truly canon because it is a shounen manga, and BL is something that Does Not Happen in shounen manga. I’m not happy about this, but it’s true. ._.

                  Like

                  • I know :/ xxxHolic is shounen also…. and Doumeki/Watanuki is so canon-y o__o I wonder if it bothers any of the male fans or they just ignore it XD It’ll probably never become that mushy or anything though, but still…. XD

  1. 4 days to draw 20 pages of X???? but if they had a whole month to do that and chapters in the last 2/3 years were mostly only 16 pages per issue *grrr* angry now because X could be finished time ago….

I also noticed the XXXholic who draws what, Yuuko is too ‘Mokonish’ while Doumeki has a more Legal Drug ‘stile’ XDDDD

    Thank you!

    Like

    • I was impressed by the 4 days thing too. But then you have to take into consideration the color pages, every month had at least one (sometimes they drew 3 pages AND the cover O.O), and also that X was never done alone, always with other works in-between, whose publication had much more than 20 pages monthly, and more color pages ^^;

      Welcome !

  2. Thanks again for this! Although I’m a bit confused now. Over at they quoted the bit about ying and yang/ kuro and fair bit with “And though Kurogane is ‘black’, he is also a more straightforward person, while though Fai is ‘white,’ he is harder to read. As for them being together… well, I can tell you that in the current volume we are working on in Japan, there is a spot… *FANGIRL CHEERING DROWNS OUT THE REST*” I wonder if that’s mixups in people’s translations (or were they speaking english?) or perhaps it was remembered/ reported differently. Similar but still a bit different.

Mmmm yay! I hope that means Tsubasa is going to have a happy ending!

    Like

    • They had translators speaking for them. But I noticed the difference around that part. I can’t tell since I wasn’t there xD Only time will show whether there will BE a spot in this current volume, or if Fye IS currently on a spot. It could be even both XD

And it’s very possible too that there was misunderstandings, which is totally acceptable since they had to trust on their ear AND memory ^^

But for me interviewer was repeating many old questions like he/he thought that something could had change xD
But for me like for You ChibiYuuto the most precious was answer with time spent on each chapter.
Thanks again ChibiYuuto and also HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR

I dunno, what about the link to Tokyo Babylon? That’s a very grounded story that addresses the supernatural phenomenon in an almost logical way. I’m not up to date with X, and I know it’s much grander than Tokyo Babylon but I still like to think of it in the same terms of character above magic powers 🙂

But it’s strange their reply that they’re all set in the same universe. I always thought of them in seperate little universes like TB & X, Angelic Layer & Chobits. I mean, even Watanuki was surprised when he thought that Yuuko meant the plastic Card Captor Sakura was real… so doesn’t that mean that Yuuko & Watanuki live in our universe, or… g’uh, I have to stop before my brain melts ~_~

It’s kind of amazing to me that they work that way ( well a lot of mangaka do )….I dunno if I could ever work on the fly like that…I mean, if you are going chapter by chapter, publishing after each one, later on you could realize you should have done something differently before, but now you can’t since it’s published…. not that CLAMP has that problem… but it’s nerve wracking…

Although i already read ‘s report, i still saw a few new questions here!! thanks~~~

    in comparison to their other works, i can understand why X has double the time (X is like FILLED with those colourings and elaborate designs *__*) than their other works such as tsubasa, but 4 days is really fast *___* in comparison to other mangaka who take like the whole month to get a chapter done, they work really fast O______O;; but then there is the difference of having a 30 page chapter and a 16 page chapter… ;___;

    • Yes ^___^ I found this japanese girl/boy who also went to the con and wrote his/her own reports. I joined both reports because some have information that the other didn’t ^__^

Yes yes *___* LOTS of inks and tones *-*

      They work REALLY really fast indeed, that’s why they can handle more than a work at a time. I’m so proud of them ;_;

I also didn’t get their explanation about the worlds, to tell you the truth. Right, so all the “Normal” mangas are in the same world but the “fantasy” works are each in a different world. Demo, *what* they consider as being a “fantasy” manga? O.o

  11. I would’ve been shocked if Tsubasa didn’t have a happy ending. It just doesn’t seem like that kind of work.

I love how they skirted the issue with the Kurogane/Fai thing. Oh, CLAMP, you devils.

I think the world thing is pretty vague but it didn’t sound too new to me. I mean, it’s obvious that Magic Knight Rayearth takes place in the CLAMP Gakuen universe, but then how are you supposed to resolve X and Legal Drug? X and CLAMP Gakuen and Magic Knight Rayearth?

Unless, of course, Legal Drug takes place after X and X had a, um, happy ending…

Yeah..I kinda figured that Tsubasa would have a happy ending, seeing as how CCS did—and I think there would be much uproar if Syaoran didn’t have happiness—(namely Sakura >.> haha)

And, I too really liked the explanation of the style in Tsubasa and xxxHolic.

  19. Oh I know! I read chapters like 112 and I can’t imagine any boys (any I know, at least) reading it. It’s weird. CLAMP’s got a variety of fans, I suppose. Though I think Doumeki/Watanuki is, sadly, more likely to become canon than Kurogane/Fay, because xxxHOLiC is more mature and not so reliant on fanservice. Meaning CLAMP still needs something to tantalize us with. And Tsubasa is more shounen than Holic, anyway, and therefore more subject to the cliches (sorry about the lack of accents; my laptop doesn’t have a number pad and therefore ascii doesn’t work) of the genre? I guess. I really don’t know.

Also I forgot to mention that I have seen your fanart and I heart it. You are good.

Holy crap I love you! Yes, 80s = best time for comics. Definitely. I only bother with current ones because I am loyal, I care about the characters, I have no other use for my money, and Astonishing X-Men is actually pretty good. Of course you can friend me! I didn’t like Teen Titans >__> Lots of my friends do, though… Is astonishing X-Men the newest x-men cartoon? I don’t think I’ve seen it if it’s reallt recent (within the last year) :O I usually check them out but lots of them are so…. I dunno… popcultured or teenage-ish that it gets weird on me XD; And lots of the characters aren’t as cool D:

  21. XD Curse CLAMP and their dodging of the KuroFai question. And I’m personally going to take the view that what they meant by ‘fantasy’ stories is series that don’t take place in a recognizable modern Japan, basically meaning Clover, RG Veda, Shirahime-Syo, and Legend of Chunyan. There’s really no problem with connecting all of the other series in a pretty consistent timeline, EXCEPT FOR X. >< With all the death and destrution of X, when exactly does that take place? I'm thinking that the only series that would take place AFTER X would be Chobits. Who knows, perhaps persocoms took off so quickly because so many people had just died. XD

    • I want to believe you are right. Because it would be AWESOME if they were all from the same world.

      >With all the death and destrution of X, when exactly does that take place?

At some point. Before they die.) Sadly, a lot of these questions weren’t too original or thrilling, or gave answers that most people could have guessed, assumed, or just figured out on their own DDD:. The Kuro/Fay one made me giggle immensely. Thank you so much for posting them! EVERY QUESTION COUNTS

  24. What I was trying to say is that the page doesn’t declare them to be ‘on hiatus’, it just doesn’t report the year in which they were ended as if to let us hope they could be resumed differently from what happened to Clover, CLAMP Gakuen or Shin Shukanden who should have been continued but instead were given an ‘ending year’ which seems to clearly imply CLAMP is going to let them unfinished.
