This month’s Animedia magazine is reporting that volumes 7 and 8 of Card Captor Sakura Clear Card arc volumes will both come with original Drama CDs written by CLAMP member Nanase Ohkawa.
The stories of the Drama CDs will be two halves of the same story — part 1 and part 2 — and they will take place right after the events of episode 22 of the TV Anime adaptation.
Thank you Cinzia/Sakura84-chan for this scoop!
UPDATE: In addition to the confirmation of what was just a rumor yesterday, we now have the info that the stories for both Drama CDs will take place right after the events of episode 22 of the TV Anime adaptation.
We also know the release date for Volume 7.
Volume 7: September 3 (Pre-order it on Amazon.jp).
Volume 8: To be announced (most likely around March/April 2020).
Please, not a drama. My Japanese is really not good enough for that. 😦

Watch a Card Captor Sakura episode a day up to September, you Japanese should have improved a lot by September, at least when it comes to Card Captor Sakura stuff. It will work even better if you do some Japanese lesson at the same time, I suggest Misa Japanese Lesson for absolute beginners on YouTube, if you don’t have any idea where to find one.

I really wonder what we will be getting in those Drama CDs, as content I mean: usually, you would think that, just like all the previous CCS Drama CDs released in the 90s, it would be about events/information that would add dimensions and layers to the characters and the story as a whole, like the Drama CD around Nadeshiko; else, that it would be short stories/omakes, like the Valentine Stories Drama CD…
But now, they say it’s in two parts and that it’s after episode 22 (the anime then?!), but we already know ‘what comes after ep 22’, it’s all in the chapters of the manga ^^;;
Should we think about it like events that take place in between scenes/episodes?
To be seen!
urrhh
To be heard!

Unless they are planning to start season 2 from a slightly forward point in the story (so, already new uniforms etc) and they want to fill that gap with the Drama CDs…I dunno, I’m shooting hypothesis because I’m just as confused as you!

I wouldn’t think so. I think they would make it so that the Drama CDs are completely optional, not mandatory.
If there will be a Season 2, they can’t expect everyone to listen to the Drama CDs first. It will be a complementary listening experience, probably.

Yes, that’s what I think.
I know that we *know* what comes after episode 22, but I think as a writer, Ohkawa knows how to explore other points of views or other layers and not sound too repetitive? That’s what I’m thinking/hoping anyway.

Neat! I need to train my Japanese more by then. Anyway, it’s definitely the kind of extra stuff I like to get with my tankoubon. ^__^
And no play button this time, which is fine with me, I find CD easier to manage.
As for the drama proper, I can’t wait to get the cast list! Will we get just the regular crew? The Lee family members? Nadeshiko’s grand-father? His wife? A new character which will appear in one of the three chapters between now and the CD drama (because we are due to get a new character(s) if there is to be 12 tankoubon)? And it’s weird they are linking the story to the anime series,it would make more sense to produce a stand alone CD like for the first series, which is easily available to anime only fans. But maybe that’s why they are using CD instead of PlayButton, they want it to be pirated…
Or maybe by “after the episode 22” they mean both after episode 22 and after chapter 28 for the manga. Could it hint to a second anime season? Maybe yes, maybe no, it could be a bridge to a second season or it could be a proper closing for the first season which won’t get a following (like the Tsubasa and xxxHolic OAD). Anyway, we’ll see with the CD in September.
About the greater picture of Card Captor Sakura’s marketing plan, the one thing I am wondering is how comes we haven’t got the first artbook yet. In the 90s series, the 6th tankoubon was released on July 13th 1998, the first artbook on July 28th 1998, two weeks and a day apart. This time, the 6th tankoubon was release on April 3rd 2019, they are announcing the 7th one and still no news of an artbook. They have about the same number of title pages and tankoubon cover.

Yes! I fully agree. Plus, there is a higher chance we’ll have CLAMP designing the CD package (even though something tells me that they will leave all of that to Kodansha). I can at least hope for the CD jacket and the CD itself to be designed by them.
I don’t think the cast list will be revealed beforehand. Specially if there will be special characters like Yelan. I think they would keep it a secret, but we’ll see.
it could be a bridge to a second season
That’s what I’m putting my money on.
As for the artbook, I did some vague count of illustrations for Clear Card and there aren’t that many. Sure, there are a lot of CCS art never released in artbook format between the end of Sakura Card and the beginning of Clear Card. However if you take into account Clear Card alone, there aren’t that many…
I think they drew a lot more merchandise and promotional stuff during the original CCS and first 6 volumes.
I hope we will get not only an artbook for Clear Card, but also one that will have all the random illustrations released between the previous arc and this arc.

Let’s see… there’s 66 pages worth of illustration in the first Tsubasa artbook. The first CCS artbook has 80 pages, the second one 90…
So far, we have… the first 6 tankoubon equal roughly 53 tankoubon covers, magazine covers and title pages, plus a few extra images like the announcement ad, the exhibition posters, the goods box chibi, etc. This should round up to about 60 pages, not far from the Tsubasa artbooks number. A that rythme, there will be over 120 pages of illustration by tankoubon 12. which would be a bit much. So that’s why I wonder about a first artbook. Unless there will be less than 12 tankoubon in the end, that is.
As for a bridge to the second season for the anime, I would guess it will work like the second Drama album for the first series. Back then, the second season was announced with chapter 33 in January and the CD drama was realease on February 10th. This time around, we should have had an announcement by the release of tankoubon 8 with the second CD, which would mean a new season within 2020, probably for april. Also, back in 1999, between the first half of season 2 and the Sakura Card part, there was the first movie. The same for the start of both anime, there was the CD book 8 months before the first one and the OAD 4 months before the second one.
Although I wonder if it will be as long as the first Clear Card part, we only have two more tankoubon worth of material for it by now, we’ll get a third one by the end of the year and a fourth one by April 2020. Let’s say 2 episodes for the Akiho in Fujitaka’s library, one episode for BLADE and REPAIR, one for REWIND, let’s say 2 per book for the tank not yet written, we only have about 10 épisodes worth. They may need to be getting Meiling back and add a few more cards to lengthen the second season to a 20+ episodes. That won’t get us all the way to tankoubon 12, just up to tankoubon 10 instead. Another possibility for getting to tankoubon 12, would be two 13 episodes long short series, like xxxHolic Kei back then.
“Plus, there is a higher chance we’ll have CLAMP designing the CD package (even though something tells me that they will leave all of that to Kodansha).”
Or it maybe something like th xxxHolic #13’s drama CD, where Clamp did the design, but it turned out to be just smoke and butterflies.
“I don’t think the cast list will be revealed beforehand. Specially if there will be special characters like Yelan. I think they would keep it a secret, but we’ll see.”
Indeed, we will probably just have the four big names (Sakura, Xiaolang, Tomoyo an Kero-chan), but we had the full cast for th OAD before hand, if my memories serve me well. So I’ll keep hoping up to the first CD at least.
“I hope we will get not only an artbook for Clear Card, but also one that will have all the random illustrations released between the previous arc and this arc.”
I second that.

I gave a look on old data…
For the last DVD of Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations, the last chapter of tankoubon 23 was published on February 6th 2008 and the tankoubon proper was realeased on March 17th 2008. For the end of Tsubasa Shunraiki, the last chapter was on April 22nd 2009 and the tankoubon on May 15th 2009. For xxxHolic Shunmuki, the last chapter was on May 2009 and the tankoubon on June 23rd 2009.
The last chapter of tankoubon 8 should be in the December issue of the Nakayoshi, which is published on November. the second part of the CD drama could be on sale as soon as December this year.
