Episode 10 – Sakura and the Sleep Labyrinth

Card Captor Sakura Clear Card TV Anime is being broadcast in several countries around the world via online services in a simultaneous or semi-simultaneous fashion. Please check the guide below to see if your country is included:

Where can I watch Card Captor Sakura Clear Card TV Anime? – A useful guide

If you watch the anime via one of these channels, you’ll be supporting the creators and helping to make Card Captor Sakura even more popular worldwide.
Sweet girl talk opening scene between Sakura and Meiling. I love that she is so present even though she is away (do the same for Rika, please!). Also, the little kitchen height aid is back? I thought she didn’t need it anymore. In fact, when she steps out of it she looks tall enough to use the kicthen sink without the aid (I don’t know how else to call it).

So the whole pre-dinner tea moment before the actual dinner was pretty much original material and explored more the relationship between Akiho and Sakura. They sure can be as cute as they can be annoying together. I loved their costumes. Akiho’s looks very much like the manga but Sakura’s one looks a little adapted, but it looks great and very Card Captor Sakura.

The biggest surprise to me and I guess most people was seeing the pictures from the play that was part of The Sealed Card movie. So it IS cannon! Ohkawa made sure to put them there so heck, movie 2 is part of the original timeline! I can’t say I am not happy about it but I am damn curious to see how they are gonna explain that Eriol’s house is still standing. But I will leave that for later episodes. I am happy that this finally put an end to it.

The second half of the episode was closer to the manga, with a few adaptations like, of course, the fact that SNOOZE and LABYRINTH appeared together. I think that worked well and I was really happy to see the comeback of the roller blades!

The battle scene was very action packed and Sakura showed a lot of confidence and focus on securing both cards. I told you all that GRAVITATION would be the new The Jump, and Sakura’s been using it a lot like there was no other card xD

I think the animation on this episode was top notch. Some body movements were animated really well.

We are finishing volume 3 (finally) with this episode. Next episode shall be a mix of both manga and anime original material. We’re most likely having another anime-only card (REVERSAL) and we’ll see Eriol talking about the mysterious magician clan from the UK.

  1. So! The ‘bomb’ in this episode! > the photos of the play from Movie 2! That was one hell of an unexpected move, that new picture of SxS was beautiful, I love it so much!! It made me smile, but when we pause and think about it, it’s not a “logical” move to make in this sequel ^^; (but a big part of me thinks “WHO CARES??!” )

    So these are all the many thoughts that are jumbled in my mind right now:

    1-whatever, let’s stop thinking and just enjoy what they throw at us! XD -stop thinking, just feel!-

    2-the staff said that new fans could follow, but it’s “not true” per se: like the adaptation of a novel to the big screen, there are things that only the ones who read the original work could understand/notice, and this is what they are doing here … a mix of cameo/fanservice. In that aspect, it really makes it feel like this sequel is an anniversary celebration of CCS series as a whole.

    3-It looks like they are giving away events as FACTS, to be taken “as is”, on their own, without including anything else surrounding said events, and we are not supposed to think or look any further into them:
    -“there is a pink bear” > doesn’t imply that the OAD is canon, nope. Only the bear is there, nothing else. They just threw in one picture of Sakura making it in ep 01 of Clear Card to somehow explain it…
    -“Eriol and Mizuki sensei are living together in England” in Clear Card, while they had no ‘special’ relationship in the previous series other than Mizuki helping out with his plans > element from the manga added just because…
    -Sakura shows “pictures of the Movie 2 play” > to be taken ‘as is’ again, without including anything else = they did a play with their class, nothing was said about the Hope/Void card, so unless she was showed at a later date, it is to be assumed once more that this fact alone was singled out of Movie 2…?

    I am a HUGE fan of the Movie 2, I really really REALLY love it! ❤ But I just can't be blind to what they are doing: they are trying to make everything canon, the OAD, the Movie 2, the manga … But they just can't have it all, considering the fillers and different things that were modified for the anime … I realize that my opinion won't be popular at all hahaha ^^;

    Accepting the whole of Movie 2 in its entirely doesn't match Clear Card events so far (manga and anime), not just because in ep01 they showed SxS separated in ep70 for the last time (and added the pink bear making as extra), not just because of Eriol's house being destroyed, which is something quite huge and hard to ignore in itself (and they will insist on that fact in ep11 next week when we reach the part where Eriol tells Syaoran that it's a "good place to hide" …) but also because of "the sealed card" herself!
    The Hope/Void card is supposed to be a super powerful card which, alone, is as powerful as the whole deck of 52 cards! This is one big element, magic wise, that is very hard to ignore… The Hope alone, changes the whole balance of powers between the characters, it pretty much made instantaneously Sakura TWICE as powerful just for having it, in comparison to all the 52 other cards put together ^^;

    All in all, making Movie 2 canon without some giant plot holes and throwing Logic out of the window is impossible, considering contradictory elements in the TV series which are completely mismatched with Movie 2 events.
    Now! How far will Madhouse take this? Are these photos the one and only allusion to the movie we will see in the entirety of Clear Card, in which case, will we shelve them in the future as plain fanservice? Or will they go further and insist on including the Movie in the actual timeline by twisting up things a bit more to make things match for a purpose xyz we are still not aware of?
    No idea! XD
    But seeing the upcoming titles of episodes, I don't think we are getting an answer to that anytime soon!
    The "Final Judgement" shall wait until later 😉 -yes, terrible play with words-

    ————————
    Sorry, I ended up talking only about those photos out of the entire episode XD
    The other events are usually quite close to the manga other than, as you said, the capture of LABYRINTH which is a pretty brutal change from what we had in the chapter = totally different ^^; But I don't think it was bad either, it was action packed, really dynamic and very well animated! I believe they can still manage to show off Sakura in that trance like state surrounded with those sparkles in another episode …
    Not sure why they made Sakura dig her own grave by showing off her battle costume, that was a surprise, I didn't expect her to show off these sort of things which she has been hiding so carefully so far ^^;;; But well, it was that discussion which led to the photo album, so everything is connected …? ^^;;;

    • the only way i can see movie 2 fitting in right now is if they kind of re-worked some of its story. such as cut the part where eriols house got destroyed, have the theme park built somewhere else, and instead have eriols house under the process of being up for sale/ up for rent or something, so that would then lead on nicely to having akiho & co living in his house in clear card.
      for the clear card series the OAD fits right in no problem. but it really throws movie 2 events into question. and it’s so difficult cause i love them both.

      lol! yeah i also love movie 2 and it’d be great if they can figure things out but i cant see how unless clamp literally edit and re-work chunks of it. for clear card series, the OAD fits right in no problem. but it really throws movie 2 events into question. and it’s so difficult cause i love them both. perhaps the only way to have both is to cut the love confession from movie 2 cause its already happened in the OAD. or to hell with it! re-do movie 2 with same story line and just re-arrange/cut some of the events.

      ok im thinking too much into it now. so ill stop. but there we go thats my opinion on the “is movie 2 canon” saga. ^^

    • The easy way to make it work is if after the movie 2, Eriol come back to Japan, reconstruct his house and get together with Kaho. He then leave school a second time, as do Xiaolang, so Sakura makes the bear. They could have addressed these with a few explanation at a time, and they have plenty of time to fill. Making a TV anime version of the OAD events wouldn’t even take that long. But no, they have to do it the complicated way and bend the plotlines backwards in not quite fitting ways. ^^;

      Come on guys, get your shit together!

      Oh, I really think/hope is the later. I don’t think the OAD is that important and can be ignored. It was a bonus for the manga (manga readers), it wasn’t shown on TV and I think it was mostly a fan treat. Now, more than before, I think they will make movie 2 canon and find ways to fit everything together.

      Yes, and also, I think Akiho is too naïve/dense to even try to connect the dots. But Sakura lied upfront about doing plays. She needs to watch her back to not get caught up on her own, innocent lies xD

  3. No starry eyes in the anime version and Yue lost his moment. FLIGHT too. I guess it will come later for another brand new card. It also means she can’t gain this ability too soon. I wonder why they didn’t just push LABYRINTH for later in the series.

    Rythme is good, scenario is smooth. Audio and visual as high standard as ever.

    As for the staff, storyboard is Kuniyuki Yurie, episode director Kamihara Toshiaki, both new names. Image directors’ supervisor is Hamada Kunihiko, the chara designer. for the third time we have an special image director for “action”, Maehara Momoko, although not the same as for episodes 3 and 9. Then we have Obata Ken (who worked on episode 4) and Sakurai Konomi, a new name.

  4. Ohhhh as much as I love and adore akiho and Sakura, the cuteness is a little too much for me. But I find the mokonas wayyyyy more annoying!!! I’m sorry I know I’m probably gonna get shot BUT…!

    Seriously?! Sakura shows akiho her costumes??!! I was not expecting that!! I literally shouted “WHAT?!” At my screen. Damn she lets her guard down around her. Sakura did a great save tho.
    Meiling!! I freaking love meiling! This girl advises her more than kero and yue put together. They should should take notes.

    I quite liked that snooze and labyrinth appeared together. And Sakura was awesome! So in control, which was lovely to see. She’s grown so so much from when she was first capturing the clow cards where she started to cry or whine cause she had no idea what to do. CLAMP have done such an amazing job in showing how everyone has matured in either subtle or big changes.
    I missed the manga version of labyrinth capture though. It had this sense of urgency about it. And yue and kero had great moments in it. But I’m secretly hoping that happens with the blaze card. I rather wanted the blaze capture to be risky in the manga but it wasn’t. So hopefully in the anime it will be.
    Also yue was involved with the maze card during the Sakura card anime season so maybe they didn’t want to repeat that too much?
    So far kaito doesn’t seem as suspicious as yet in the anime. I remember him being super suspicious by the snooze chapter in the manga.
    Anyways lovely episode as always. ☺

  5. Yaaaayy I’m 1 episode behind so I’m gonna keep this “essential” XD
    So, let’s begin saying that I liked the episode, it wasn’t one of the most action-packed or emotional, but it surely had its appeal, for many small details!
    The animation! The art was average, with some very good shot each now and then, but the animation was actually quite good! As you said, there were some scenes that flowed really well (especially from the beginning of the card hunt onwards, loved how she floated in the void while descending into Labyrinth). I just love that BGM that plays during the battle, it makes me excited and be all “go Sakura, go!”
    Random comments in no order: she used the “child step” again probably because she needed to reach comfortably a place on the kitchen…she might have grown enough, but maybe not enough to reach everywhere comfortably (and she needed to cook, so, better stay at a good distance by oil and squirts). The photo album!! Oh I think you already know what I think of it. It was such a nice surprise, and that redrawn shot is really pretty!!!
    But I went crazy over Sakura’s carelessness in showing her costumes to Akiho…what the hell, girl? I guess those two are way too comfortable with eachother!!
    The Red Moon of Doom at the end was a really nice touch, right what the audience needed after such a sweet episode….a good punch in the stomach, that’s what we need! Man, the creepiness.
    Can’t wait to watch next episode, where the Kill Bill sirens will finally go off!! Yahooo!!

    • I liked the fact that they actually redraw the pictures from the play instead of just lazily taking screencaps from movie 2. They even cared about the right perspectives.

      I forgot to write about the Red Moon at the end. I also thought “what the heck is thaaat?”. Ominous to say the least.
