XXXHOLiC Rei #4 fell to the 40th position in Oricon’s weekly comic ranking, with 17,674 copies sold on its fourth week of sales and an estimate of 224,257 copies sold overall.

While the number of copies sold fell less than 50% in comparison to last week, the overall sales up to the 4th week are the lowest for a XXXHOLiC volume, even lower than the overall 3rd week sales for the previous 3 volumes of XXXHOLiC Rei.

These numbers are only for the regular edition. Numbers for the Blu-Ray limited edition are unknown.

Here is a chart of the previous XXXHOLiC Rei ranking performances, for comparision’s sake. You can see that the 4th volume had the weakest performance of all.

These numbers are still good. There are many titles out there selling way less than this, but there is no denial that XXXHOLiC is slowly losing its popularity and the numbers are there to prove it.

It is likely that XXXHOLiC Rei #4 will not show up again next week on Oricon, but if that turns out to be the case, I’ll post here about its performance.

  1. The two-year gap between volumes and the spotty serialization schedule have really done a number on xxxHOLiC. When the series comes back, I really hope Ohkawa will take a page from the rapid plot progression in CCS and stick to the Zashiki-warashi arc without jumping into any side stories. I’d be so frustrated if we get something like that wine-making chapter from “Rou” right after that big cliffhanger with the Neko-musume.

    • oh hell to the yes!!! i agree with everything you said there panicle. ^^ i wish i had a thumbs up button on my computer keypad to show my appreciation to your comment. so ill give you a smiley face instead 😀 OH LORDI! i hope they stick like glue to the zashiki plot, and give it enough chapters/ arc. it has all the ingredients to make for a fantastic suspenseful plot which holic soooo badly needs. and i want to see badass watanuki. i think he has badass potential. i cant remember if we have seen this side to him? maybe little moments of it. but i do think his character development has been good though.
as for the sales figures they aint too bad… i think holic still has enough fuel in it to keep going. its just that it needs a gear change is all. and certainly a faster engine!

That’s a good metaphor for where the series is right now! I guess we’ll be finding out in a little less than a week whether we’re off to the races (har har), or if Watanuki is going to take some time off to teach an emotionally-repressed, upper-middle-class client how to knit while expounding on some philosophical principle lurking within human relationships.
