2016 will mark the 20th Anniversary from the beginning of the serialization of Card Captor Sakura. Several commemorative activites are being planned to celebrate that and the first of them is a new Card Captor Sakura artbook (Illustration Collection) to be released in March 2016.

The new artbook will have illustrations of the 3 artbooks previously released from 1998~2001 handpicked by CLAMP themselves. These illustrations will be rearranged in this version, temporarily titled as “Restructured Illustration Collection”.

There is no word yet if this new version will include any of the illustrations that were drawn from 2002~2015, but let’s hope for it! It woulf a shame if it didn’t.

CLAMP first hinted on the release of a new Card Captor Sakura artbook last week in their weekly radio show.

More details will be announced soon.

  1. After reading your post, I went to check my emails and I have also received one from Kodansha ^_^
This is exactly the same message that is in the nakayoshi website.

Leaving aside what is announced at the moment, marketing wise, I think it would dissuade some fans, who already own the previous artbooks, from buying if there is seriously nothing new at all…or at least, they will definitely not make getting this artbook a priority, that’s for certain. I think they necessarily have to offer something new for this to work.

I also saw the thing about the many other events in 2016 for the 20th anniversary, but it kinda made me shudder to be sincere hahaha~ I remembered the difficult times I had financially because of all the pre-orders I made a the time. I couldn’t even enjoy the goods bcs I pushed myself (=my wallet) beyond my limits to get most of them. But well, I learned form my errors and should be careful this year, unless it’s something good, I’m not buying! (I say that, but I already pre-ordered both figmas Sakura(january) and Tomoyo(june) + the eyeglasses(february) + the Petit Charas series(january) + I will be ordering the artbook(march)…)

The ichiabn Kuji website was updated today if you are interested: http://www.bpnavi.jp/kuji/item/1401
We got yet more little chibis from Clamp ^_^

    • Can you believe I don’t have any of the 3 CCS Artbooks? I’ll be definitely getting this one! I hope it gets a nice treatment to balance the fact that there is going to be no new art. Or maybe we just need to wait, maybe the new art will be included eventually or hey, there will be other 9 months in 2016 for them to release an artbook with the new art. That being said, I do think that there will be some additional things on this artbook than what was already announced…

Thanks for the ichiban-Kuji tip! Here’s another illustration we might never see in a decent treatment xD

  2. As expected is going to be a CCS 20th anniversary!

I think that there are two possibilities for the artbook.

    1. They put old stuff and new illustrations.

    2. They are trolls and decide to release two artbooks. One with old stuff but a new cover, like it’s the same old stuff, but look!!!! A new cover!!!!!! And a second artbook with the new illustrations. Something like they did with X Zero and Infinity xDDDDDDD

  3. Here’s a more detailed translation, if it helps:

Cardcaptor Sakura, which began serialization in the June 1996 edition of the girls’ comic magazine “Nakayoshi,” will welcome its 20th anniversary in 2016. In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the comic’s serialization, we are pleased to announce that we will do a revival release of a reorganized version of the “Illustration Collections” long awaited by fans.

We launched the “Nakayoshi” 60th Anniversary line beginning in 2015. The Complete Clow Card Set, Complete Clow Card Set Fortune Book, and the Nakayoshi 60th Anniversary Edition of Cardcaptor Sakura (9 volumes) drew a great reaction from the hearts of our readers.

In continuation of this, many voices called out in request for a reprint of the Cardcaptor Sakura Illustration Collections published between 1998 and 2001. For the many [fans] who pored over the beautiful illustrations in a daze as children, we will release a revival edition, the “Reorganized Illustration Collection” (temporary title), compiled from CLAMP’s personal selection of illustrations published in Nayakoshi during the time of [Cardcaptor Sakuras] serialization.

This edition will leave fans watering at the mouth at the appeal of CLAMP’s gorgeous illustrations. The publication date will be in March; we will announce the details concerning specifications and other information on a later date. Please look forward to it!

In addition to the Illustration Collection, we are planning various other commemoration activities for the 20th anniversary of [Cardcaptor Sakura‘s] serialization throughout 2016. We will periodically update the “Nakayoshi 60th Anniversary” home page with announcements, along with more detailed information on the Illustration Collection. Stay tuned!

(This is giving me the impression that the new Illustration Collection is going to be like the Nakayoshi 60th Anniversary reprints of the original series — basically a large, reorganized collection of old illustrations with a (literally!) shiny new cover slapped on. Considering that this is coming out in March, and CLAMP will probably be releasing a few more new illustrations throughout 2016, maybe it’s for the best that the publishers wait until later to collect the new material?)

    • First thing first: HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you Anonymous ! ^_^ I hope you enjoyed yourself in this festive time of the year! 🙂

THANK YOU for the full translation of the description ❤
And indeed, when reading through your clear and neat translation now, even the little hope I had of seeing the newest illustrations included kind of died out… They really *did* make it quite clear: this truly seems to be nothing else than a reorganized version of the 90's artbooks, and it doesn't seem my hope of this statement changing when they give more information later on, will be realized…

Nonetheless, we can definitely count on 3 things (almost) for sure: a new cover, bigger dimensions than the 90's version, and very likely better printing compared to 15 years ago. And maybe some bonus/extra material? Like when they included the postcards in the vol09 of CCS, the CCS digital version thing on codigi, or even the filefolder included in the TRC artbook etc… I believe it's fine to at least have some expectations?

This actually made me wonder, I mean the part with "CLAMP’s personal selection of illustrations published in Nayakoshi during the time of [Cardcaptor Sakuras] serialization" : does this mean only the color illustration that were published in the Nakayoshi magazines at the time (= chapters' splash pages) are candidates then…?

That’s a good question. The CCS 20th Anniversary events are being planned as part of Nakayoshi’s larger 60th Anniversary, so it would actually make sense if the artbook only contained color illustrations published in the magazine. That said, I might have mistranslated that part — it could just be referring to color illustrations published during the time CCS was serialized, period, from 1996 to 2001. Either way, this book seems like it’s supposed to be a nostalgic draw for older fans who read the series when they were little and want an attractive collector’s item to put on their coffee tables or bookshelves. We’ll find out later whether or not there will be any extras with the book (maybe a new interview, at least…?), but so far as the new illustrations are concerned, I feel that Nakayoshi would have mentioned them in this initial announcement. Hopefully I’m wrong — we’ll just have to wait and see!

        • This is very much what it seems to be: as you said, a favor for the fans to have a pretty collector book with, very likely, the most ‘attractive’ illustrations out of the lot, selected by Clamp.
You know what? I can’t say I’m not still a bit disappointed about not getting the new artworks nicely printed in a good book, but I am actually getting used to this upcoming artbook, one way or another 🙂
I’m very much looking forward to it and will make sure to preorder it! 😀

  4. Happy Holidays!
This is such great news!! I was able to get the reprinted version of the clow cards and now this I’m so stoked.
Is there a way I can get more info about this when it gets out ? Like where I can buy this?

    • As an international fan not residing in Japan, your best bets are Amazon.co.jp which delivers worldwide for a very good price (this is what I’ve personally been using for the past 10 years for all the books from Japan I want), and the same goes for CDJapan, which is very good too. This artbook will very likely be available for pre-order in both these websites soon enough!

Since it’s being released this March, I do not think it will take long for more information about it to be posted in Nakayoshi’s website which chibiyuuto’s put a link for in this entry, and also in Clamp’s twitter/blog ^^

I hope this was helpful, and happy holidays!
