XXXHOLiC◆Kei #6 Review

Just as I had expected, making a 16-pages long chapter into a 20-minute long anime episode wasn’t a good idea, as a result, this is so far my least favorite episode.

I would explain this mostly due to the fact that I don’t understand a thing about Mahjong and its rules. In fact, I had never heard of Mahjong before CLAMP showed it in XXXHOLiC in this very arc. I’m sure it must have been a very funny episode for those who actually know the game rules.

I also didn’t like that Ame Warashi and Zashiki Warashi appear in this episode. Their appearances are supposed to be special, but in the anime every now and then they randomly make an appearance, specially on original episodes, and this totally kills the preciousness around the two characters.

I’m glad the Yumekai song played again in this episode, I like that song so much and I didn’t think we would hear it again.

The spirit woman didn’t look as pretty as shown in the previous episode, or better, as shown in the manga.

I think what saved this episode, for me at least, was the always so brilliant performance of Fukuyama Jun, who is funny even when we have no idea of what’s going on xD

There were tiny Akagi crossovers, too, I’m sure CLAMP must have been thrilled.

XXXHOLiC◆Kei Episode Schedule:

Here’s our little table of upcoming XXXHOLiC◆Kei episodes and their staff. Items in bold represent new additions.

Episode Title Script Storyboard Direction Animation direction Story arc Air date
1 Spider’s Web Michiko Yokote Tsutomu Mizushima Junichiro
Taniguchi
Spider Lady April 3
2 Left Pupil Yasutaka Yamamoto Hiroyo Izumi April 10
3 Half Fumi Ii Tsutomu Mizushima Kazuchika Kise April 17
4 Yumekai Nanase Ohkawa Kiyoko Sayama Daisuke Tsukushi Ryouko Nakano Yumekai April 24
5 Kohane Shinsuke Terasawa Minoru Ueda Kohane May 1
6 Peace Taishirou Tanimura Yukina Hiiro Tomoji Hatake Mahjong May 8
7 Drawing Water Yoshiki Sakurai Susumu Endo Hara Yumiko Water well May 15
8 Whispers Miharu Hirami Yasutaka Yamamoto Hiroyo Izumi Bells May 22
9 Rumors Michiko Yokote Hiroshi Fukutomi Masahiko Watanabe Kyoko Kotani Kohane* May 29
10 Awareness Shinsuke Terasawa June 3

* represents my own assumption and is subject to change.

I’m quite sure now that they will be pushing Kohane’s arc backwards and then Himawari’s arc forward until the end of the first half of the series, which could also be the very end of the series. It’s totally possible to wrap everything up in Himawari’s arc, since after this point the manga became more and more linked with Tsubasa.

Yoshiki Sakurai wrote the upcoming episode, then there is Miharu Harami, who wrote a few episodes for season 1, then Michiko Yokote is back again writing two more episodes. We still have an episode written by Mizushima that is yet to be announced. I hope Ohkawa gets to write the final episode(s).

  1. Haven’t seen this episode yet, but that screenshot is quite lovely!

I’ve heard of mahjong a couple of times before, and I’ve only played the matching version. I think I’ll look into it now, since you’ve mentioned it, so that I won’t feel lost during this episode.

    • That screenshot is one of the prettiest moments, in my opinion ^^

You know mahjong more than I do, then, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it at least more than I did ^^

  2. That screenshot looks pretty ^_^

Neh, I dont like when they stretch a single manga chapter into a whole episode either. D:

But Yay! Kohane arc is coming hopefully~

Me neither, like that snowball fight episode. I hated it so much.
I loved the Kitsune Oden one, though X3 That one was stretched nicely.

I had always considered that chapter to be a somewhat omake chapter (LOL) and when I heard from you that that one chapter was going to a full episode, I had in mind scenes that had been elongated deliberately, like the screenshot for example; they’ll just be staring away, wind blowing, and we’ll be staring at them, waiting for them to move. Was it like that? I haven’t downloaded the episode though. ^^”

    ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY JUNJUN!

I can’t wait for the Water Well episode for some reason. :3

Ahahaha no it wasn’t XD It was very action-packed, I mean, around a mahjong table (lots of mahjong moves, you know).

I’m looking forward to that one too X3

  4. I don:t think I could explain the rules very well, but it is a funny episode if you know the game even as little as I do (one of my friends is a mahjong researcher). It:s also slightly risque for the two of them to be playing, since mahjong has a rather bad, if rather unfounded, reputation here in Japan.

I want to see the Himawari arc so much.

  5. This was one of the two times I watched the raw: first was the first episode, for obvious reasons, and this one was because I was so scared about not knowing anything about mahjong and the effect that would have in my translation later ^^u And even with that and my limited japanese, I really enjoyed it thanks to FukuJun and the funny situations XD I really hope I can manage to learn enough of the game to avoid suffering too much when translating ;__;

Off-topic: do you know if something happened to ? I’m worried about her >_>

    • I feel sorry for you guys u.u In a good way of course, I mean, good luck with this episode!! @_@

FukuJun is so awesome, isn’t he? He was born to play Watanuki. Bless him.

About Alison, I know, I was worried about her too! Yesterday I heard from one of her friends () that she took a small vacation ^^

I will scold her later for not telling me anything and making me feel so worried xDDDD (kidding, she doesn’t need to tell me anything xDDD)

  6. CLAMP WORKS

Nothing to do with Holic but I heard some rumours I would like to talk with u about:
a CLAMP fan announced in a forum that all the breaks CLAMP is taking now between Holic and Tsubasa are because they are thinking to bring X back to life. That they are working on finishing it… Can that be right??
Another fan, nevertheless, answer him that CLAMP is not going to continue X but they are planning to continue Lawful Drug once Holic and Tsubasa are finished(which means no Lawful Drug till 2009).
Do u know which of these two rumours are right?? Did u hear anything about not continuinig X?? Because that would be my nightmare….
    Thanks
    Marilyn

  7. I didn’t like this episode either. Not only was the animation not as nice, but you could really tell it was stretched. It felt like a filler episode XD; I even LIKE Mahjong and it was boring, haha. I’m still pleased with this season of Holic though ^^

That was indeed a nice episode since I understand the basics of Japanese mah jong. The enjoyment of this episode was worth every last yen I invest in my Dynasty Warriors’ Mah Jong game. ^_^ I was in Watanuki’s shoes a few months ago, so that remind me a lot of wtf moments.

When they all went ron on his discarded tile, just when he was about to get his first tsumo, priceless. ^_^ But they are not nice, they should have pointed Mokona was in furiten and couldn’t win (you can’t win with a “twin” tile of one you have already discarded), Watanuki is still a beginner. XD

There were great Mah Jong plot twist, the script writer did a flawless job, it was far more interesting that I expected.

The animation and drawings were quite good, the seiyuu too.
