Mangettes: so secretive even editorial dept. doesn’t know specifics

…or so they say.

This year’s edition of the New York Comic Con fair is taking place since yesterday. At Dark Horse’s panel they announced that they’ll release an omnibus edition of CLOVER.

This edition will feature all 4 volumes in a single 512 pages long book. The release is planned for 2009.

CLOVER was originally licensed and published by TokyoPop but became out of print since 2006. The license has been now transferred to Dark Horse.

Very little was said about Mangettes, CLAMP’s upcoming 2009 project with Dark Horse. My friend Kethylia is there and she reports that the project is so secretive that not even the editorial department knows the details about it (or so they say xD).

CBR News is covering the event too and reports that,

“Mangettes” will be the first manga project to be released in English, Japanese, and Korean simultaneously. They will be 80 page issues, and come out with greater frequency than most manga.

So I think 80 pages is a lock (sounds yummy), and they will come out with greater frequency than most manga? Do they mean Dark Horse’s manga or japanese manga in general? Does that mean less breaks? It’s such a monstrous project, with such a pace, it would take only 2 months to compile a volume, and for a monthly manga, that’s just wow! Did I mention how excited I am for this project?

About CLOVER, I’m am very glad for you North Americans, of course, but unless this omnibus edition could be somehow related to a possible return of the manga, is not a big thing for me. I think “CLOVER” and “Mangettes” are two separate projects, and that Dark Horse might want to introduce CLAMP to their readers with CLOVER before launching Mangettes. If the Mangettes were the continuation of CLOVER, it would be over in 4 months given that there’s only 2 volumes left for CLOVER. Besides that, the press release for Mangettes stated it would be a brand new story.

It’s still a great opportunity to support CLOVER, show that there are people interested in it, and perhaps contribute for its return. It is intriguing, though, why CLOVER? Out of all CLAMP works?

EDIT: According to Kethylia, about Dark Horse representatives not knowing details about Mangettes, “their marketing director sounded exasperated, not coy, when I asked about it, which means that this is the truth”.

  1. w00t I love Clover the most out of all of CLAMP’s works honestly so between the release of the music video (FINALLY), finding a doujinshi, a pencil board and the books in Japanese with their dust jackets, this year is WONDERFUL for me. I can’t wait for the omnibus!

and the mangettes! that is so exciting to but for such a different reason (I sincerely hope these do really well and other Manga-ka consider the same in America).

  2. I think they picked Clover because it’s the only of Clamp’s manga that was printed in the flipped American reading style to not have a corrected version in Japanese reading style in English (did that make sense? ^^;;) Also, out of Clamp’s out of print stuff in america, it’s probably the best series out of them and also the earliest to be out of print. so, it makes alot of sense ^^

    • Thanks for your opinion, it does make sense ^^
Besides, maybe from all of their current titles, it’s the only one that is currently out of print. Or maybe because it suits Dark Horse ^^

  4. Given that this was in New York, I imagine when they said that the mangettes will come out faster than most manga they meant in the American market. It’s been years since I bought translated manga, but isn’t the wait between volumes usually four or five months (with the exception, I know, of shonen powerhouses like Bleach)?

As for Clover: why not? I’m not up on the license status of all the Clamp properties in the States, but it’s a popular title with a lot of interest among fans, and it serves as a decent, not-too-long intro to Clamp’s themes. What I find intriguing is the possibility that the mangettes art style may be like the style of Clover.

Indeed, that’s why I asked. They were probably talking about american translations. Given that this will have a simultaneous release, it’s only natural that the compiled volumes will be released in a much shorter interval of time. I was just dreaming this could mean less breaks between chapters xD

Maybe the key is that not-too-long intro. And a good one, CLOVER has a huge impact.

      >What I find intriguing is the possibility that the mangettes art style may be like the style of Clover.

That would be perfect. I love CLOVER’s style.

      • I don’t know how most companies release them, but I know Viz generally releases manga volumes every 2 months.

I’m so happy they’re re-releasing Clover! I’ve been dying to read it for the longest time, but the only copy I could ever track down was vol. 1 from the library. Bah.

(Oh, and I hope you don’t mind. I borrowed your screencaps of CiW2 to make some icons for myself. Let me know if you do mind. ^^;)

        • Del Rey takes some months to release a volume and another of Tsubasa and XXXHOLiC, don’t they?

          Of course I don’t mind, don’t worry ^__^

          • yeah, Del Rey takes about the 4-5 months previously mentioned (for tsubasa anyway, xxxholic slowed down because of the lack of volumes to release ^^;)

            And thanks muchly! =]

  6. Hi chibiyuutochan,
Even i’m not live in america im pretty excited about the omnibus edition, it’ll be awesome, and maybe could have some extra stuff or something like that XD.
But definately they are taking extra care about the mangettes, we need some info owo”
    Thank you n_n

    • I don’t think there will be any extra stuff, at least they haven’t mentioned anything.

      >But definately they are taking extra care about the mangettes, we need some info owo”

I wonder if CLAMP themselves know about the story xDDDDDDDDDDD Ohkawa can come up with a story in 20 minutes so maybe they haven’t even thought about it. Kidding, I’m sure they have xD

      • Thing is, though, CLOVER and X were initially released flopped (left-to-right) and Tokyopop and Viz did nothing to rerelease the titles unflopped. Tokyopop at least corrected it with their rerelease of Cardcaptor Sakura, so even if it is out of print now, there must be some sort of obligation Dark Horse feels to do right by CLAMP by selecting a title that has never been released in English properly.

  7. Thanks for the info as usual.

And it’s true about the editorial not knowing much about Mangettes, i’ve talked a few times with one of the DH manga editors and he was like
“we really don’t know much about it”.

    • You’re welcome! ^^

Yeah, I have e-mailed them and they also told me they don’t know about it, but they could be following orders.

I do think that they must not know MUCH about it. But I’m sure they know more than we do xD

      • Well it’s like they know 1+2+3 things and they share with us the 1+2.
It’s not like they know 1+2+3+4+5+6 and they share with us only 1. So i guess, it’s a good trade. XD

Well, patience i guess, at least it’s good thing that we know that we’re gonna get another new brand CLAMP work soon! ^^

  8. I think that CLOVER is more in sync with Dark Horse’s publications than any other CLAMP title. That and probably it’s the only one whose rights have been dropped! ^^;

  9. Oh wow, I didn’t even know that it wasn’t in print anymore! (the manga/anime stores near me still stocked it, the last time I checked)

I hope it’s a continuation of CLOVER, that would be amazing seeing as Tokyo Babylon and CLOVER were my favourite CLAMP titles, but seeing as how they keep on saying that they’ll finish Gohou Drug, and, well… I’m not really holding my breath here. xD

    • I have scans of that flipped version, and it’s really not nice at all. Glad you guys can have a proper version now ^^

      >I think it would be SUCH a good OAV series!

      Word on that!
