Gorgeous title page with Watanuki serving face! It reminds me of the cover illustration of volume 6.

We got 16 pages on this chapter AGAIN! Two times in a row? Is this the new standard? I’m not complaining. And if we didn’t have Watanuki for two chapters straight, this time around we have only Watanuki. Well, almost…

We’re back in Watanuki’s room where he is shown under deep concentration, to the point of sweating. There is an unfolded paper with Japanese writing in front of him. He had been searching for something.

He then says he found what he had been looking for and we are transported into a beautiful Japanese garden where a white female figure with long, white hair wearing a white kimono lays. I can’t help but think she looks like what Hinoto would have looked like if she appeared in XXXHOLiC. I’ll use she/her pronouns when referring to the white female figure because of the female characteristics, but since this is not a human being, gender is not so relevant. Could she be an Inari?

Upon seeing Watanuki, she tells him that she can’t remember how long it’s been since a being of a “different race” stepped into that place. On top of it, inside a dream.

We then learn that it was Haruka who taught Watanuki that he could use dreams to talk and interact with other beings (Haruka told this to Watanuki in Chapter 57). That stayed with Watanuki up until this moment, in which he is putting into use. The white female figure immediately recognizes that the person Watanuki is referring to is Haruka (“that priest”). She’s familiar with him, of course.

Watanuki asks her if she knows Haruka, and the white figure responds that they met each other in this same place many years ago “in human time”, but only a nap’s time in her own time.

She talks about Doumeki (“a grandson that looks just like him”), acknowledges his purifying powers, but adds that they are not a match to his grandfather’s. She also says that Doumeki’s purifying powers are a source of concern for Watanuki.

Upon seeing Watanuki’s surprised reaction, she quickly asks questions that Watanuki himself was thinking, as tough reading his mind. She tells Watanuki that she knows about his concern towards Doumeki because she saw it directly within Watanuki’s heart.

We then learn that she is the leader of the Kitsune and that the paper that Watanuki had been concentrating earlier is the letter that he received from Oden Papa Kitsune. She tells him that she cannot be lied to because she has “eyes” that can see through people’s hearts.

The reason Watanuki came to her is because he has a wish that he would like to be granted, one that he cannot grant himself due to his condition (of not being able to leave the shop, probably).

I wonder if the Kitsune leader has wish-granting powers and Watanuki will ask her (for something in exchange?) or if it’s more like asking her “political/diplomatic” influence to negotiate with the Fuuri or something. After all, the letter from the Kitsune did say that in this battle they would take Watanuki’s side. It’s interesting because he had to find the leader, so this must be something that not even Seoritsu-hime can do, apparently…

16 pages for this sixth chapter of volume 6. 100 pages so far for volume 6!

Chapter 72 will come out on February 24th.
