Kobato. Drop. 13 by CLAMP No Lumiere

It’s out !

2 surprise color pages! I’m starting to think CLAMP-NET.COM has given up announcing color pages for Kobato., they haven’t announced any of the previous color pages for quite some time now.

So cute Kobato-chan with feathers. Are you really an angel, little dove?

The editor’s comment in the splash page says that Kobato. is running with a fast development, and honestly I have to agree. Just the previous chapter I mentioned how quick Kobato started to realize her feelings for Fujimoto, so I think this comment is fairly correct.

I understand that it may seem slow like hell because we get 14 pages a month, but if you take a full volume and read it, you’ll notice that a lot of things happened in one volume.

I’m growing fond of Genko, somehow xD I find it amusing that such a big bear loves cooking baumkuchen xD

This chapter was very informative about these creatures’ true nature. For example, we learned that Ginsei was found and named by Ioryogi, they must have a master-student relationship (actually, that could have been the case at first, I think it developed to something bigger later xD). Because of that, Ginsei wouldn’t take anything from anyone. Genko threw his towel but Ginsei dodged it, but after Genko’s provocation he took the towel to dry himself off. I took that gesture as if Ginsei wants to prove to Genko and himself that he has changed and has grown out of Ioryogi.

Actually Ginsei slightly reminded me of Subaru in this chapter, the way he is hunting Ioryogi down, and how he looks like he was hurt by Ioryogi, reminds me of Seishirou and Subaru (in a waaaaay, please Sei/Sub fans, don’t get me wrong, I’m not comparing Seishirou to a dog or Subaru to a raccoon-like creature xD).

We also learn that it seems Ioryogi is someone with a big influence in Heaven, that’s impression I got anyone. His name means “500 Gods” , he made an uproar in Heaven and what’s more, he has a contract with God to grant Kobato’s wish. Genko and the others were brought to the human world because of the mess Ioryogi did.

We still don’t know how to link these facts yet, how one thing led to another, was he expelled from Heaven and now has to pay a price to return? Too cliche?

Back to Ioryogi’s real name, with kanjis, to start with its very interesting meaning, 500 Gods, it reminded me of something Nekoi said in an interview about his name. She said that at first the name “Iorogi” would be given to a XXXHOLiC male character (but she doesn’t mention who), but then they found another name for the character and ended up giving “Ioryogi” to Kobato’s dog.

I always wondered who that XXXHOLiC character might be, and after seeing the kanjis for Iorogi, I’m almost certain it was Doumeki.

Doumeki’s name is written as 百目鬼, and it’s roughly translated as 100-eyed Devil.
Iorogi’s name is written as 五百祇, and it’s roughly translated as 500 Gods.

Very similar, aren’t they?

It makes me wonder why Kobato calls him Ioryogi, something tells me that he wants to hide his real identity, and if that’s the case, maybe Kobato has no clue about Heaven or Ioryogi’s origins.

This is getting interesting ^^

  1. Or he’s Ioryogi when he’s a plushie and Iorogi when he’s an angel.

I agree, it is getting interesting. The game’s afoot!

On the other hand, though things are happening fast, we are into the fourth volume of the manga, which went pretty glacially at the beginning. So maybe things will slow down again in the future, too.

      Yeah, good point! ^_~

I agree that the “Exam” arc was terribly slow, but that’s understandable somehow. I think things started to move once it moved to the “Drop” arc.

  2. Ah, thank you!
I’ve been waiting for this ♥

LOVE the color pages SO MUCH! Kobato is so cute! I like how the feathers are around her as well ^^
I found this chapter really interesting and informing too. A contract with God, eh? I want to know how and why, but I guess we’ll just have to wait.
Ah, I can’t wait to see what happens next. So exciting!
And thanks so much for sharing!

    Pfft, I think it’s more offensive to compare Ioryogi to someone like Sei |D;;

Or maybe she does, but she’s also helping hide Ioryogi’s identity? K-kind of like in TRC where everyone uses fake names.

Could be too, it could be…

Thaks, Mm Kobato keeps getting better (~Dreaming~When is it going to be licensed in USA or Mexico??~xD~)

Love the color pages, and yeah, agree with you about the comparation with Subaru and Seichiro, but this is confussing, why CLAMP always leave us with a doubt? They cant be clear once in their life or what?xD

  5. Thank you for your work!!!
Arrrw, new information, but also new questions! CLAMP really like to talk in riddles! >_> Actually Ginsei slightly reminded me of Subaru in this chapter…
Yeah, but in that case Ioryogi becomes a very strange Seishiro ^_^

By the way, do you have any idea of what are children do in nursery school (except of soccer and naptime ^^” )? In Japan i mean. Do they have any lessons or smth like that?

I’m not the best person to answer this, but I think it’s a place for kids of parents who work all day and are not yet at school, you know?

I don’t think they properly learn how to read, but they must have some educational activities ^^

    I considered that really strange…

    • I think she didn’t because she was so focused on her singing and being sad. But more than finding it strange that she didn’t notice, I think it’s even weirder the fact that it started raining. As if “God” was sad hearing Kobato’s sad song and started raining…

  7. 五百紙…
Are you sure it’s 500 Gods? It looks like 500 papers to me… LOL I’m pretty sure I recognize 紙 in Chinese as paper, and I’ve just searched in japanese dictionary that it has the same meaning…
I suppose it’s just a typo. The correct one is 祇 isn’t it? I agree with you that 五百祇 seems to be very powerful. XDD I got 神祇 as ‘God of Heaven and Earth’ anywhere. XDDD

    Like

    • I’m pretty sure that 紙 means paper as well (from Chinese at least). However, 紙 and 祇 can both be read as “kami” in Japanese, so maybe it was meant as an intentional pun on Clamp’s part?

      Like

        • Kanji is a bit tricky to read in Japanese because there is multiple ways to read one character. Usually, there is the way that is based on the Chinese pronunciation and the other is based on a native Japanese word that has been “assigned” to the equivalent Chinese character.

祇 is gi ‘god, earth spirit’. I was actually thinking about 神 (kami = god, divinity) and 紙 (kami = paper). Sorry about the mix-up.

          Like

        • Ewwww sorry, that was my mistake! The kanji I used really means “paper” (but it’s also read as “kami”, that confused me!)

The correct one is 祇, but it looks slightly different than the one that appears in the manga, right?

  8. *bows* Thank you muchly for Clamp no Lumiere’s steadfast and wonderful work on Kobato. ^^

It’s a bit strange that Kobato would be moving so quickly when Ohkawa remarked the development of Kobato would go about slowly. Maybe she means slowly in other aspects of the story, like who (or what) Kobato is and Sayaka and Okiura’s past relationship? Or maybe how Kobato will come to terms with being in love with Fujimoto or how their relationship will develop as a result? O_o

Well, if Doumeki and Ioryogi originally had the same… name, they do seem to have a love of sake, or at least alcohol, in common. =)

Speaking of missing side character, hey, Icchan? Is your eventual entrance going to be startlingly dramatic and fabulous? ^^ I will never give up on that! Chitose’s happy family will be the cutest thing ever.

      >It’s a bit strange that Kobato would be moving so quickly when Ohkawa remarked the development of Kobato would go about slowly

True that. But that was during Sunday GX time. Maybe after they moved to Newtype, she had to rework a bit on it?

Oh Icchan! I don’t “miss” him yet because he hasn’t appeared LOL! But I’m eagerly awaiting his appearance! I think it’s very likely that he will appear in the anime (with 24 episodes, we shall have lots of original episodes).

  9. Thanks for your hard work!!

    Hmmm…

About the name ‘五百紙’, could the 紙 means ‘paper’?

I’m a chinese and I’m sure that it means paper in Chinese.

Although in Japanese, it’s pronounce as ‘KAMI’, which is the same as the ‘KAMI’ for god…

Anyway, I could be wrong… XD

    Thanks again!!

mmm maybe Kobato is and angel… o,o
or some kind of creature like that hehe

    Thaks chibiyuuto
Hope the next drop Kobato appears more

  11. I’m amused with Ioryogi’s two names. If you aren’t into yoga, a ‘yogi’ can be seen as one who is in union with ‘God/god’ and spiritually clean while a ‘rogi’ is one who is diseased and dependent on this ‘self-gratifying’ world ^^

I have a question about 祇 that maybe you can answer? Does it usually appear in other Japanese text as it did in this chapter? I’ve only seen the ‘show’ radical written like that in hanja, not kanji.

    Like

    • I’m not sure I can answer that because I’m not a pro in japanese language. It’s the first time that it appears in Kobato., but I don’t think that’s your question ^^;

I loved your icon, by the way!

Reading the CLAMP no Kiseki short mangas..
I discovered that in the volume 11 Ginsei appears
    but
Ginsei also said Ioryogi that the name was given by him
So CLAMP made the “announce” earlier
    xD
    I really found it interesting
