Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations – The Boy’s Right Eye

After watching it 2 times, I think I can write a review about it.

The first one was good. This one was good, pero no mucho. The problem is the same as always: the animation.

The animation in this one kept shifting between good and really, really bad. It was too unstable for OVA standards, some scenes looked exactly like the extinguished TV Series, which is really disappointing.

The first scene with Yuuko was very good, she looks great for the first time (okay, maybe second if you count the movie). The first underwater sequence with Kamui and Syaoran, on the other hand, was terrible. If BeeTrain worked in any particular scene, I would say this one was definitely one of them. There were some shots I caught myself thinking “Oh my god, who’s that?”, while a fugly reproduction of Kamui was at my screen. And they want us to believe that is Kamui? He’s supposed to be pretty for god’s sake.

Everything about that sequence is bad, the water reservoir’s simplicity is lame, I don’t like the weird combination resulting of the water and the yellow light coming out of the cocoon.

There’s only one thing that looked good in that sequence, the blood, the blood did look good underwater… and the fightings, all of them so far were very well done.

The moment Syaoran becomes “the other Syaoran”, the animation shifted back to a good one, but even so not everything was perfect. The part when clone rips Kamui’s arm off was a bit anti-climatic. One can barely tell what’s happening at the scene and the arm was not completely ripped off like in the manga. Xing Huo’s death was good, though.

I hated the way the whirlpool looked from the inside, that 3D effect didn’t look good, sorry. And the characters didn’t look wet even though they had just came out of the water. These little details really count for the final result, why did they draw the characters looking wet in the setteis if they made no use of it?

Another very anti-climatic moment was Fye casting magic. It’s the first time we see him using magic, this moment should be grandier, but it looked so bad…. no close-ups, bad angle and who said Fye’s magic is pink? At least in my head it’s blue. Did you really write that, Ohkawa? I’d like to think she didn’t and that was only a bad tendency from the Tsubasa animators to make everything that shines look pink or rainbow-colored.

The whirlpool looks nice from the outside view, though, and I liked the water drops standing still in mid-air. I didn’t notice that from the manga, can you believe it? I thought they were falling from the ceiling, and not paralyzed.

The eye-eating, the climax of the OAD. It looked… well, ok. I’m glad they added crunching sounds, but the impact was not as great as the manga. In the manga, we first see Syaoran’s hand dripping blood, then Kurogane looking startled, and then the wide shot with Syaoran eating the eye. In the OAD, Kurogane’s expression is not the expression of someone who had just seen your journey partner eating the eye of your other journey partner (and maybe more…). It lacks emotional impact, and it’s not because I knew what was going to happen, it just doesn’t look as cool as in the manga. I look at that scene in the manga and it still causes me a great impact, even though I’ve seen it over and over again.

Real!Syaoran arrives, and here we have a very nice fighting sequence. Like I said, the fights are the strongest points of these OADs.

I don’t know why it leaks water when the clone cuts the cocoon, there was no water inside it in the manga, and let’s face it, Sakura wouldn’t be able to speak, scream or breath if there was water inside it. Did you write that too, Ohkawa? Or was it PRODUCTION IG’s idea?

The next thing, the clone giving Sakura the feather, that was another piece of bad animation. I wanted to hit Sakura while in the manga I felt real pity for her. Later, when the clone is about to leave and she pleads for him to stay, now THAT is a good animation. Why can’t the whole OAD look like that? If they can’t make a good piece of animation in two months, then don’t do it!

At least they saved the best staff for Subaru’s appearance. He looks very nice =) One thing I liked very much in this one was Subaru and Kamui’s seiyuus, specially Kamui’s, he sounds so good! We couldn’t hear much of Subaru’s but I was happy with the very little I heard of him.

As you can see, I wasn’t very pleased with this OAD, I can only hope they are saving the best for the last. Ohkawa once again did a brilliant job with the script, I mean, she managed to fit an entire tankoubon in 25 minutes! I think there was a big advantage for this one since there’s a lot of fighting sequences, but even so, such a dense script and quick pace makes everything flows much more natural.

The script is good, the animation is bouncy, and I still don’t like the soundtrack, I’ll give it a 7/10 grade (and I’m being too nice here… xD)

Shinsen-subs released their subbed version yesterday but for the first time, I’m keeping the RAW. I found a few mistakes in their version and the video is a little pixelated.

  1. I agree Fay using his magic was anti-climatic. What bothered me the most wasn’t the fact the magic was PURPLE (I imagined it blue too), it was the fact it was scroll-like magic. To me that looked more like Naruto than Tsubasa (=A=;

  2. I promise you.. I’m not harping on you.. and i swear to god that i mean no harm, but i do believe that you are harping on it a little much. You seem to have incredibly high standards for this ova.

I do agree though, that the first one was incredibly awesome and the second one didn’t really hit that bar. But for me it was just as awesome. And we all know that the middle can never really match the beginning and the end.

    • Yeah, I was very bitter, I admit that, but those were my true feelings, believe me! ^^” I didn’t mean to be harsh with it just because.

      >And we all know that the middle can never really match the beginning and the end.

I know that too, but I couldn’t pretend it was just as good as the first one =\ I liked it, like I said, it was good, but not that much…

I’m sorry if I sounded too bitter, I couldn’t help it, it would be like lying =\

      Like

      • Completely understandable. I wouldn’t want to lie either. Lest the clone come and eat my eye too! *gasp* lol j/k

As long as its your true feelings its good. But let’s just hope they bring the OVA overseas. Then we won’t need pixelation. :-p

  3. Shinsen-subs said Subaru was a GIRL LOL. What planet have they been living on? XD; There were several other translation mistakes I noted too, who the hell is working as their translator >_>;;? They were simple japanese phrases too, bah.

I was disappointed most by Fai’s magic, Kurogane’s lack of drama/reaction in the eye scene, and the Kamui/Syaoran underwater. It’s still nice to see it animated though. I really wonder if the 3rd on will be the best or the worst XD; *slightly worried* I hope they have the best animators working on the vampire transformation scene x_x

        • You know the part where Yuuri says that the future he saw was Wolfram with another man and how he didn’t want that future to happen? Shinsen translated it so he says, “I saw a future where you really did like me…”
WTF WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?! D8

          • HOW THE HELL DID THAT TRANSLATE TO *THAT*??? XD;;;;;;;

            I think they have to find the bad seed(s) in their translating staff and find replacements. It’s getting more and more sloppy. Or rather, not sloppy, but ‘incorrect’ XD;

            Like

    • >Shinsen-subs said Subaru was a GIRL LOL

Exactly XD This happens a lot when more than one person translates a single project, to haste the production. Unless they saw Subaru at the end and even then thought he was a girl? XD

      >I was disappointed most by Fai’s magic, Kurogane’s lack of drama/reaction in the eye scene, and the Kamui/Syaoran underwater

Check, check and check *nods 3 times* Same here, those were my three biggest complains as well. The emotion was nowhere to be felt.

I’m worried about the next too, but since it’s the last, maybe it’ll be just like the first one, or better. We can only wait and hope ^^

      Like

      • Yeah they must’ve rushed way too fast, and had too many people working on it at once. But really I think maybe they should change some of their translators. They aren’t even translating the japanese too literally, they’re just translating it wrong altogether ^^;;;

Yeah, we can only hope it goes out with an awesome bang I guess XD I’ll try not to have high expectations, so maybe I will be pleasantly surprised XD

        Like

    • I felt that it’s weird, too, Subaru as a girl??

Another thing that I think the translation was wrong was when Kamui said “you’re wrong”. It should be “you’re different” because Kamui felt the difference of the clone Syaoran before and after he was stabbed by Kamui and the blood was feeding Subaru.

  4. haha, if you look on my lj, you’ll see I agree with you completely, however I missed few points in that review ;D yes, gay beam, lack of Kuro’s emotion, animation -those points are weak points, maybe apart form on thing – I love the bgm ;D
This OAD was so… static, comparing to manga. One thing better – more KxF slash XD

    Like

    • Kurogane was a complete rock XD In the manga, half of the scene’s impact was printed in Kurogane’s panicked face!

It really was very static =\ What we “felt” for it is all thanks to what we read once in the manga, and maybe the brilliant seiyuu jobs.

  5. I didn’t really understand the part with Kamui’s arm and Syaoran pulling it. Did he just like pull it out of its socket, or he just felt like grabbing it or somethinng? and when Kamui was healing, his shirt healed too. lol. was that suppose to happen?

Everyone had problems with Fay’s magic. Not saying I didn’t cause I like it better if he wrote the thing out instead of making it a ninja scroll rolling out lol. And I also saw his magic as blue too. I remember in the terrible anime when they first showed him, when he wrote his magic with that staff of his. Wasn’t it blue? lol

You forgot to mention the closeness of Kurogane and Fay. Kurogane was actually hugging Fay in the OAV. XDD (is it OVA? OAV? OAD? or is it all the same? lol)

    Like

    • That scene also lacked the impact. Maybe a few ripping sounds when Fye is looking at it and a close-up could help to increase the atmosphere.

      >and when Kamui was healing, his shirt healed too. lol. was that suppose to happen?

Yes, that happens in the manga too ^^

      >I remember in the terrible anime when they first showed him, when he wrote his magic with that staff of his. Wasn’t it blue? lol

Yes xDDDD It was really disappointing, it didn’t look cool at all.

      >You forgot to mention the closeness of Kurogane and Fay. Kurogane was actually hugging Fay in the OAV. XDD

hahaha I noticed that, but I’m not a KuroFye shipper xD I know that ship exists, I just don’t squeal over it ^^ But I can imagine the shippers must have loved it ^^

I thought even though the blood in the water looked good, the color was a bit off…might be only my screen XD; but Fay’s magic looks definitely pink….ô-o it’s just weird! I really hope that Ohkawa didn’t write that! Hn…I can’t remember any color-pages with his magic in them…but still, it just strikes me as blue, too…
^___^ Subaru was great! (hm, I think his voice is the same as in a drama-CD for TB1999 I have…it fits~ *happy*)

    • >I thought even though the blood in the water looked good, the color was a bit off…

You’re right, it should be darker o.o

I would like to see her script, to see the differences between manga and anime script. But I don’t think she specifies this sort of thing (color of magic). It could have been blue, white or gold, as somebody mentioned, but that pink/purple mixture is really lame.

      >I think his voice is the same as in a drama-CD for TB1999 I have

Are you sure? Isn’t it too old? Do you know his name?

That’s exactly what I thought. Some of the scenes looked so great but others….not so much.

Oh god the magic, I will never forgive them for how stupid they made it look >_> It’s supposed to be blue, written out, and not eletric!

It was kinda weird how they had the water coming out of the cocoon thing. I noticed that and I was like “Wait…waiter? What?” o.O

    Like

    • And I said “good”, not “awesome” xD

      >and not eletric!

RIGHT! It looked like Pikachu or something, with sparks everywhere xD

Exactly xD How did Sakura scream underwater? Or “cried”? XDDD

  8. …has not watched it yet, but pink??? That’s Sakura’s color, not Fai’s…

I would of thought like an ice-blue (because he was surrounded by death as a kid and the fact that Celes is very cold…), or something like that also…

    Nice review, by the way

  9. I agree with you for the most part…
I loved the scenes toward the end (and at the end) with Sakura. Augh, her screaming and pleading broke my heart. *cried* ;~; (but it didn’t seem like she put as much effort into stopping Syaoran from leaving as she did in the manga)
I also liked the beginning conversation with Yuuko and R!Syaoran. ‘Twas very pretty. I disagree with you on the soundtrack thing, though. I love it. The eye eating scene was good, but didn’t have as much of an impact as it did in the manga. (I still flailed my arms around when they showed the closeup of Cloney munching on Fay’s eye, though x_x)
I found Fay’s magic being pink…odd. (Are they trying to hint at something? XD) I also pictured it being blue. And I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed that they had their Beetrain-amoeba-eyes at some points. (grr) All in all, I really liked it, but it wasn’t nearly as good as the first one (or obviously, the manga). Here’s hoping they clear things up for number 3!

The crunching sound was nice xD At least we had no censorships.

      >Are they trying to hint at something? XD

HAHAHA they don’t have to do that to hint that, we can get the general idea through other aspects xD

      >And I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed that they had their Beetrain-amoeba-eyes at some points. (grr)

Certainly not only you, unfortunately. Hahaha “amoeba-eyes”, brilliant definition xD

  11. I LUFF LUFF LUFF Kamui’s seiyuu, he is the only celebrity/famous person since Backstreet boys that I’ve been in LOOOVVEEE(in fangirl terms) with.

IMO, I thought it was done superbly, because I am not a big Manga person. I felt my soul rip apart watching it because it was so emotional.

ONE THING THAT REALLY BOTHERED ME: When C!Syaoran enters the cocoon, the thingie with Subaru in it already has a slice in it -_- Supposedly the part where C!Syaoran slices it open later… that bothered me very very much.

Fai’s pink magic also bothered me too o:

  12. Very much agreeing with you on the animation. I was expecting so much more since the first one had a good variety of shots. I think they were creul in the way they made Kamui, at most parts, too :/ Best was definetly at the end. Sakura’s voice actor did a great job with the ‘don’t go.’

But hearing the anime soundtrack in there was actual more distracting than dramatic to the scenes for me. Slightly disappointing since I thought the new track worked really well in the first when R!Syaoran breaks free.

Like you say, I hope they save the best for last!

I dont think fyes magic would look that good in blue wouldnt it ook like Real syaorans raitei attack but gold would be interesting . I thought the beginning and ending were perfect and seeing the shop makes me more excited for xxxholic season 2 . I thought that there werent enough close ups in the OAD for example when syoaran uses his magic to get his sword from mokona . The fights were great but the color for the reservoir setting was odd maybe too dark . Because of the lack of close ups there werent enought shocking moments and I think the whole episode focused on animting the material quick so there wasnt anytime too pause for close ups but One of my favorite moments was sakura thinking of all the people see knows and waking up seeing two syaorans . Another would be syaoran remeberign seishiro one of the reasons I liked them was because it was interesting seeing stuff that was already animated from the anime in this OAD and yuuko and fai looked the most different when you compare the anime and OAD . overall I give it a 8/10 not as good as the first one but mainly for the flaws in not showing close ups I d loved to see .

Also there is a new poster for xxxholic season 2 on http://www.xxxholicanime.net/ .

    I loved it, but as you said, sometimes the animation felt like.. blah. ;;
When they first showed R!Syaoran as a kid, his eyes were gigantic and they.. scared me! Another part I didn’t like very much was the scene with R!Syaoran getting stabbed in the leg. I love that scene, and he kinda just stood there for a while until he fell to the ground. :\
… Cloney looked good in most scenes after eating the eye. I liked the chewing sound effects XD
And yeah, the fight scenes were really good. I love the Syaorans fight scene to death.

    Good review! 😀

      >Another part I didn’t like very much was the scene with R!Syaoran getting stabbed in the leg.

It was another very anticlimatic scene. Where are the SFX? *PAN*! Sudden camera zooms? Those things help to build a DRAMATICAL atmosphere, but they haven’t used any of those techniques.

      >… Cloney looked good in most scenes after eating the eye. I liked the chewing sound effects XD

Not fair xDDD Tsubasa is supposed to have it’s own budget since the poor fans are paying high prices for these OADs.

      >because I’m getting bashed in all possible boards for daring saying it was not the ultimate OAD! O__O It wasn’t.

Oh my, really? I can totally see that… fans tend to unconditionally love anything that is related to what they have an admiration for. Well, I’m a fan too but I have a very strong critical sense. I’ve watched good animation before, at least good for me, and I won’t take anything as one.

          >I still like the second OAD very much, it just didn’t live up to my humble expectations.

    Yuuko looked awesome though.
The fact that Shaoran was bitting Fai’s cheek before getting to his other eye had me go o.o;;;; and ew…but yes…it was okay, I hope they continue making these though, because I prefer watching them like this to what they did with the actual anime v_v

  25. Hahas, I lovereading other’s TRC review~ yours bring up many good points too

I agree with you the whole way with the animation, I was pretty disappointed at Kamui and Syaoran’s initial fight scene and the water effect where’s the wet-hair-plastering bishonen fanservice scene?!

I didn’t notice Sakura in the water cocoon part as much, I assumed the animators wanted to emphasized the surprise that C!Syaoran cut the cocoon skin and not Sakura. But didn’t Kamui struck his nails in to feed Cocoon!Subaru Syaoran’s blood?

    • Thank you! Thanks for leaving your comments as well ^^

I think they got lost with the cocoon thing. In the manga there was no water inside it, but they decided to add it in the anime, but they forgot that Sakura spoke and had to breathe inside it, too ^^ It was a continuity mistake.

  26. True… I AM a little disappointed with the OVA…

    Where? Here:
-The scene where R!Syaoran clap his hands to pull his sword. (they should make the ‘pap’- clap sound louder~~
-The scene where Clone stabs R!Syaoran, Syaoran should fall to his knees when Cloney pulls Hien out cos there’s a pulling force~~ He looks useless (sad to say as I’m his fan, may him look more heroic!!)
-The S&S scene!! Sakura look weird… The way she fall and so on…
-Everyone looks a bit out of shape, well, sometimes…
-The scene where Kuro-papa scold his bad puppy… I can’t really feel his anger, bad expression
-Not really statisfy with Miyu Irino’s dubbing for Cloney… I thought he should have sound more… um, mysterious and eehh, dreamy??
-Cloney look weird holding both Fai n Kurogane at the same height *refer to the pic above*
-The part where Sakura faints and Subaru waking up, I told Subaru woke up jus IN TIME to catch Sakura???
-When Sakura grabs Cloney’s arm, he was supposed to be emotionLESS, isn’t he?? But he looks like he’s thinking, making up his decision he before he leave her… Didn’t they mention that Cloney CAN”T any pain?? How come he got thi ‘OUCH’ look when Syaoran threw him off with Raitei Shourai??
-Those blood stain on Clone’s cheek look funny…

But HEY, there’s also scenes where I’m SCREAMING for…

-The scene where Sakura woke up n saw TWO Syaorans… That really made me laugh (LOL for no reason…)
-The scene where Sakura searching for her most precious person in the flashback. It was really beautiful, love the art~~
-The BATTLING scene!! It was sooooooooo COOL!!! I like that twist and turn Syaoran made in the air while fighting with Cloney!!!!
-When Syaoran told Kuro-papa about his badly design outfit… I like the way he look!! So innocent *melts*
-When Subaru appears!! I love the fan-service!! Kamui hugs Subaru!! *YAY* The part where Subaru holds Sakura was the only part which truly looks like the manga, the art work there is the highest quality of all!! *and of course, the way Syaoran look at the veryy end of the OVA is GOOD!!*

I KNOW! Not to mention he looked like 4 sticks: _|-|o

I agree with most of your “bad points”, but I think MiyuMiyu was great playing both Syaorans. I do agree that you have a good suggestion on the clone being “dreamy”.

And you’re right, the final 30 seconds were excellent. The fist and final 30 seconds were excellent, but that’s all xD

after being hit full force with all the crazy manga plot twists, the OAD felt sorta…anticlimatic a discovery. o.o
the whole time i was dying inside. (cept for the brief kurogane cameos, heh)

hopefully, the finale will blow us away…(in a good way) T^T

  28. I can’t get use to the title’s look. If they had no inspiration, they should have placed it in a corner of the first scene, so it wouldn’t be the only thing we can to look at…

As for the animation, it didn’t seem that bad to me, maybe I watched to much Naruto these days, I lost all critical sense. ^^; I would say the animation is overall decent, although a bit uneven.

The script is dense and faithful, Ohkawa did a perfect job, as usual.

I’m not that happy with Subaru’s voice, it’s not soft enough. I would have his voice sond more like begging that ordering. The one from Tokyo Babylon was the better.

    >I still don’t like the soundtrack

Same here, although it sounds better when used at the right time to fit the right mood. It got on my nerve much more in the TV series than in the movie or the OADs.

    • HAHAHA you even MADE your title’s look xDDD I have to disagree with you in here, unfortunately. I actually like how the title is displayed in the OADs, and in this one specially since we can hear the bells of Yuuko’s store in the background.

      >As for the animation, it didn’t seem that bad to me, maybe I watched to much Naruto these days, I lost all critical sense. ^^;

Hahaha! The last anime I watched was… well, the 1st OAD, so I expected something in the same level for this one as well.

      >Same here, although it sounds better when used at the right time to fit the right mood.

Exactly! Great to see you don’t like the soundtrack either XD

      >It got on my nerve much more in the TV series than in the movie or the OADs.

      Me too o.o *nods*

  29. The worst thing about this mini series, in my opinion, is the Foley art. Take the part where Syaoran grabs hold of Fay’s neck. Why is there a punching sound effect there? That one simple thing sucked all the drama out of the scene for me as I laughed out loud.

My favorite scene, though was the one where the real Syaoran copies half his heart and puts it into his clone. I really, really like that a whole lot, even though it’s not longer than five seconds. It started off a little shaky with the bad close-up of the real Syaoran floating there, but I loved his expression as he ripped out his eye.

I also loved the scene where Sakura begs the real Syaoran not to kill the clone Syaoran. She sounds so desperate.

    \\my two cents

    • I liked the eye-ripping too. In the OAD it was more evident that he actually ripped it, we even see some blood, unlike the manga.

Thanks for your two cents! ^^ Sorry it took so long to reply~

  30. pero no mucho, then?

Certainly I’ve never seen you this dissapointed.
And I see what you mean, this arc IS really important, thay why there are such high expectations.
Apparently they were sloppy in some details and in the animation.
Unfortunately, I can’t see it until the weekend if I’m lucky, but I’ll keep your considerations and I’l comment later on that.

And makes me happy that Mamoru Miyano (Kamui’s seiyuu) has more space in this OAD, because I haven’t had enough in the first one. ^^

Maybe they’re really saving the best for the end, Chibiyuuto! 😀

    See you around!

  31. I just saw the OAD and read your comments. You’re right in some things. Personally, I settle for the animation mostly. Though I did see what you were talking about when you said it was too much like the anime. At least the facial expresions were good.

Pink magic really sucks! I wanted it to be bluish white just like the anime. I don’t think it fits well, he’s always being associated with blue, and Sakura with pink. It just doesn’t fit.

The eye-eating conveys the emotion. We get a full view first and then a close up of what he’s doing and all the time the chewing sounds. I think it was good enough.

You’re absolutely right about Sakura! I had to run the video several times before I could discern some intelligible word in what she was saying from the cocoon. And she wasn’t crying! She was supposed to be soaked in tears! What happened to all that angst? Where did it go?

Well, at least the most important part of the Tokyo arc is already over. Now the other important part; Kurogane’s sacrifice over Fai and the turning into a vampire *_____* I can’t wait to see that!

  32. I agree with your review, however these are lower budgeted OADs and therefore probably have budget constraints.

On the other hand, I definitely prefer a well scripted episode with less than brilliant episode than beautiful animation with a lousy script.

Was I the only one disappointed with Fye in the end?

    >>I think the same for the first OAD. Animation quality isn’t always the same.

“And they want us to believe that is Kamui? He’s supposed to be pretty for god’s sake.”
    >> I agree unfortunately T_T

“I don’t like the weird combination resulting of the water and the yellow light coming out of the cocoon.”
    >> é_è I like it. It is not like what I have imagined in my mind, but I think it’s nice.

I didn’t like also the magic of Fye. Not the color (it was a little bit too much pink) but for the “scroll-like magic” as said lovelessinma in a comment before. I was a little bit disappointed with that.

“I don’t know why it leaks water when the clone cuts the cocoon, there was no water inside it in the manga, and let’s face it, Sakura wouldn’t be able to speak, scream or breath if there was water inside it.”
    > I notice this inconsistency >ww<

So, I very like this OAD because it's one of my favourite part of the manga, but as usual I don't expect too much for the anime translation.
TRC manga is always more dynamic than the animation…I used to it v_v
And I think it's pretty good…anything to do with a whole episode of the serie TV.
