CLAMP’s Mangettes to begin in Spring, 2009

Dark Horse representatives came to Powell’s Bookstore in Seattle recently to talk about their future projects, among them CLAMP’s Mangettes.

Still untitled, they revealed that publication is scheduled for Spring 2009. This date will coincide with CLAMP’s 20th Anniversary as well as Dark Horse’s 20th Anniversary of manga publishing.

The article also claims that apart from the already announced Japan, USA and Korea, Dark Horse revealed that the manga will be simultaneously published in the UK and Taiwan as well (and possibly other countries).

They know but can’t say what anthology it will be serialized in Japan

I was REALLY wondering that… because Dark Horse doesn’t run any manga magazines in the japanese market, or does it? And I was wondering if the Mangettes would be published individually or sharing its pages with other manga titles. The latter seems to be the case. So, which will be, which will be? Is it from Kodansha or Kadokawa? Or maybe neither?

  1. I wish my country was among them, but we never have anything special in Spain (=_=; I’ll end up buying the Japanese volumes if I like the series anyway.

Thank you for the info, as always!

    • I think there’s a good chance, there’s a great chance they’ll distributing it to all english-speaking countries that has a potential manga market. Do you see a lot of Dark Horse products in Canada?

    • You’re welcome!
I wonder that too! Publishing in different countries makes licensing a lot easier ^^ Even if not simultaneously, we might have it published in our countries sometime ^^

  3. I´m from Spain also, and I can´t complain about the situation here with Clamp. Almost everything of Clamp have been publishied here. Even the special magazines “Clamp no Kiseki”. So If I saw the next year, than Mangettes are being publishied in Spain, it wouldn´t be a big surprise.

  4. Thanks for the news, Yuuto-kun ^^ Now we have a date to look forward to, even if right know the only thing in my mind is how will the next TRC chapter be XD

I agree with the anonymous comment right above me, here in Spain we can’t complain about CLAMP’s works available to us: luckily, we have almost everything by them ^^ I’m not totally confident in seeing the Mangettes here, but if there’s an option to bring them to this country, I know Norma Editorial (the publisher who licenses most CLAMP titles) will quickly seize any opportunity to do so.

    • Yeah, something to look forward to! I hope we can get more information and hopefully a couple of promotional illustrations before that. Oh, and I hope TRC and XXXHOLiC will be already under “finished works” in CLAMP-NET.COM xD

Yeah, I think this title will be a lot easier to license. Apart from japanese, there will be an official english version available, which makes translation a lot faster and easier. Besides, I think licensing a Dark Horse title must be easier than licensing, say, a Kodansha title xD

      • Not very good. We get imports from America and some publishers have gotten contracts with UK publishing houses to publish over here (for example, VIZ manga gets imported BUT they also have a publishing deal with Gollanz House…so I can get Bleach with either publisher stamped on it).

And that’s just for volumes. I’ve never seen any anthologies over here. Or decent magazines, even.

Newtype is available over here, but it’s the American import with a few UK columns in it-exactly the same as the US version. And even then, I have to get it from a Comic Book shop 40 miles away or have a subscription from an online anime/manga retailer.

It’s only been in the last year that I’ve been able to walk into a generic bookshop and see manga on the shelf. Before that ALL my manga was purchased online.

          • It might be better in the cities, but I live out in the sticks!

In fact, I live in the countryside with about as much distance on all sides from a city as you can get (whilst not being in Cornwall, Wales or Scotland!).

40 miles is my closest city. All I have around me, otherwise, are medium sized towns.

  5. Dark Horse doesn’t have any share of the Japanese market, as far as I know… More than likely, they’ll team up with one of the biggies, like Kodansha or the others. Still, this is great news. 😀

    • That’s what I’m thinking, too… Kodansha keeps popping in my head because they published most of CLAMP’s titles, but Kadokawa isn’t completely out of the table either. Most of their licensed mangas belong to Kodansha, but they same some other titles from Kadokawa, Shueisha and Hakusensha.

  6. It’s being released in the UK!! That makes a change! Usually over here we get American imports and then the UK release comes out a few months later from the same company under a different name… For some odd reason Del Rey’s UK side goes by the name ‘Tanoshimi’. Why they can’t just stick with Del Rey I have no idea.

Oh well! My heart just leapt in my chest to hear about this!

It’d better be something worth the wait. >_

  7. Spring 2009, eh? So that’s as far as the end of Tsubasa can be. ^_^

    >They know but can’t say what anthology it will be serialized in Japan

So it won’t be a 80 pages a month story, and there will be room for other series. Yokatta.

For the other countries, I expect at least the ones who published the Clamp no Kiseki magazine to be included as well; France, Germany and whichever it was for the Spanish version (Spain? Mexico?).
