EXCLUSIVE: 2nd Season of XXXHOLiC announced!

FRESH NEWS!!!

At the TBS Anime Festa 2007, being held in Tokyo during this weekend, the production of the 2nd Season of the XXXHOLiC anime was announced.

The staff and cast will remain the same as of the 1st Season. Beginning of broadcast still undecided.

Oh, that’s lovely¡¡ xxxHolic anime is wonderful, I like it and everybody was waiting the announcement of the second season ^_^ Only one question, does anybody knows is there’s a 3rd season for Tsubasa? I mean, the 2nd season finished in the world before Tokyo, so the 3rd season will have X’s world or not? In my opinion, the anime series seems not going to have any “bloody” world, I don’t know why :S But I really want it.
    If someone has the information about it, please tell me ^_-

        • I agree with you.
          I prefer the OVA with Tokyo world than the anime serie which shows a world completely different from the manga. It’s true, if this 3rd season is like the second one, I prefer to stop the serie and to start some OVAS which show the real story.

          • Watching that second season was a despair, apart from Rekord World and Ashura World, nothing else was that much interesting. And yes, I hated Piffle World, but I hated it in the manga too.

            • You’ve the point of that, the first season was good, because it was the first time you see the characters moving and, in addition, it was very loyal to the manga. But the second season was very disapointing, in my opinion. They found some wings that they weren’t in the manga, and the productor had a lot of imagination… That’s why I don’t know what they are going to show in this 3rd season, which world or something like that.
              I like Piffle world, but onlu in the manga, it was very funny when they got drunk and started to do nonsenses ^_^, but my favourite world is Tokyo (X world)… I’m looking foward the DVDs of these world ^_-

  7. I’m not sure, but I think they will… I’m not sure how they’ll do it if XXXHOLiC’s story is so tied with Tsubasa’s… probably the anime will walk on it’s own.

      • Yup! Holic is pretty popular, it sells great, so the second season was only a question of time. Still, I’m glad that it got confirmed. With CLAMP one can never be too sure 😀

        • Yeah, I was puzzled when the series got supposedly cancelled because the audience rates were really high and the DVD sales were quite good, not awesome, but still made it to the top 20’s.

          But then, I confess I had really lost my hopes about it… seems like it was just a matter of taking one big break to avoid filler episodes.

    • Honestly, I don’t think so… it will look a bit confusing for those who only watched the anime, suddenly all these references. Maybe we’ll see small references (hence Fye’s staff), but I don’t think we’ll see real!Syaoran arriving at Yuuko’s shop, for example xD

  16. Very good news. I love the Holic anime so I’m quite happy with this. There should be enough for a second season without crossovers, even if a few filler episodes are needed (and Holic’s fillers are good).

  24. So the DVDs’ selling was no that bad after all, yokatta! And we will get a second season!

    As for when it sill be broadcasted, we may be too close to October to start it for this fall’s season. Maybe January then, or April. But to have the spider lady animated, and Kohane, and Doumeki’s grand-father!

    I hope Ohkawa will do more scenario for the second season, like she did for Card Captor Sakura and Magic Knight Rayearth.

    • The series is quite popular in fact, the complete DVD set is quite high on auction, the complete DVD set is sold between ¥30,000 or ¥40,000. Even de drama CD is almost always sold over ¥10,000 (I don’t expect to get this one before years).　Not as high as say, Fullmetal Alchemist or Mushishi, but still fairly good.

      As for the story itself, I believe it will stay away from Tsubasa’s storyline. That’s pretty much the way Ohkawa wanted to do xxxholic anime and she change the story line enough in the first season to make it difficult for anyone to try to get the story back with the Tsubasa crossover. Tsubasa has a fair influence on the last tankoubon’s plot, but most of it doesn’t rely on Tsubasa that much. Syaoran’s part in Watanuki’s rescue can be replace by the Zashiki Warashi; the passing of CCS!Syaoran can be omitted (like the passing of TRC!Syaoran and gang); the chatting between Watanuki and Sakura can be replaced with chatting between Watanuki and the Zashiki Warashi (she does have a bigger role in the first part as well); etc.

      The tricky part is the story about the water and the egg, that lead to tanpopo and Doumeki’s mysterious egg, but Ohkawa can change the client and even change what Watanuki has to get from that yard (rocks, flowers, mug).

      I’m sure Ohkawa knew what she was doing when she first started to make a completely independant version of xxxHolic and I’m sure all the Tsubasa related storyline are already changed harmoniously in her plan.

      • I don’t think the decision to eliminate all, or nearly all the tsubasa references came from Ohkawa alone. I guess it was rather a decision from the network, TBS, because the links would seem out of place and not syncronized, unlike the manga.

        They ask for stupid things like “having the summer story aired EXACTLY on the summer” so I really think that was their decision. I think Ohkawa herself would love to insert the links there.

        As for the future story getting more and more linked with TRC, I guess it is time for XXXHOLiC anime to take it’s own path away from the manga, and for that, we NEED Ohkawa to do the scripts for it’s original ending!! *desperate*

        • Even if it wasn’t Ohkawa’s decision alone, it was the path that was taken and when Ohkawa agreed with this, she made sure to fill the plot holes made by the abcense of Tsubasa. She’s the original author and she’s the series supervisor, she’s professional enough to have plan out everything before the start of the first season. We all like her for this. ^_^

          Well, I must also admit I’m currious to know what would have been xxxHolic without Tsubasa … ^^;

    • Yes we will! I had totally and completely lost my hopes for a second season (not for OVAs, though).

      Once again, Ohkawa managed to get what she wanted, to animate the Spider Lady’s arc. You can BET it is going to be written by her xD

      For me it’s NO WAY October, more likely April, IMO.

      I HOPE SO TOO! Not just mere 4 episodes T___T 4 episodes is nothing! She should do 12 AT THE LEAST XDDDDDD And the last, ending episode better be hers too.

        The ending episodes should be done by her, it will be a brand new story at that point and both CCS and MKR had their second season made entirely by Ohkawa (well, minus a single episode early in the second season for Sakura).

        • The difference is that in CCS, Ohkawa was alone the Series Compositor. While in XXXHOLiC she’s sharing the position with this stupid guy ¬¬ He’ll obviously write some episodes… curse him.

          • Plus, the director did two episodes in Season 1. If the Director and the series supervisor get the same number of episodes (2+8), that still left 14 éposides for Ohkawa, enough to do the final and the Spider lady, at the very least.

            • Apart from the 2 series compositors, there were other 3 guys alternating the role of script-writer. I hope these guys get the hell off and leave it to Yokote and Ohkawa, only.

              And I’m sure Ohkawa will DEMAND that the Spider Lady arc will be hers xDDDD
              And it’s the next arc! Maybe we’ll get the first, or second, episode written by her already!

                Right, let’s take a deeper look to the script-writers portfolio:

                Yonoke, co-series compositor (1, 4, 8, 10, 14, 15, 22 and 23), Watanuki meet Yuuko, the fortune-teller, the monkey hand, the ghost stories, the twins 1 and 2, Watanuki’s ghost friend 1 and 2. Quite faithful to the original story, so not that bad, but still nothing as good as Ohkawa. ^_^

                Sakurai, the movie script-writer (2, 5, 9, 13, 19 and 24), the liar, the foxes and the birdcage, the girls with many boyfriends, the girl with growing wings, the snowball fight, the wandering arms. I hope he will get kicked out of the second series’ crew, he ruined my wandering arm story. ¬_¬ He did get the one non-canon story though, and one of the most difficult to rewrite, the snowball one, which is almost as starting from scratch, that doesn’t bode well. He also seems to be the official writter/re-writter of short stories, I’m affraid he’ll stay. I have the feeling he’s the writter who gives himself the most freedom to re-write, I don’t like that too much … ¬_¬

                Ohkawa, co-series compositor (7, 12, 17 and 20), the hydrangea and the Ame warashi, the summer story, the novel story, the murderess’s photo. She got two non-canon stories on 3, plus the hydrangea and the murderess (which I believe were ones she wanted to do). The two non-canon stories on 3 bodes well for Ohkawa to do the final of the series. And she will likely do the Spider Lady too, as she’ll likely ask for it. I hope she’ll get many more.

                Hirami, the only script-writer alone (6, 11, 16 and 21), the computer addicted women, the Zashiki who messed Valentin with another celebration, the well and the Zashiki, the old women’s warning. He doesn’t seem to be essential, he doesn’t have any specific genre or charater for him, he will likely work on another project if Ohkawa takes more room.

                Mizushima (3 and 18), Angle-san and the chinese lantern and liquor. He’s working more on the storyboard and the production (or whatever you call 演出), as he did for the movie. He did Angel-san, for no specific reason it seems, but for the chinese lantern and liquor episode, he did the script, storyboard and production. I suppose this one was hard to make with several brains implied, with the many, may, many characters to animate that all had singuliar form and act oddly, the animators’ nightmare, really. There isn’t anything like that since, so we might get rid of Mizushima for the script part. *crossing fingers*

                So I think they’ll get rid of Mizushima and Hirami if Ohkawa take more room, but I’m affraid Sakurai will stay. He might even get more episode than Yonote. ¬_¬

                  I hated the liar (CENSURED, WTF?), loved the Foxes and birdcage, girl with boyfriends is original, God I hated the snowball fight… completely ruined it. But Sakurai wrote the movie… he’s somehow important >_>

                  I believe Mizushima will want to do some… he’s a hell of a pro! I loved the chinese lantern one, and he wrote, drew the storyboard and directed that one! But he’s busy as a director so he won’t write too much episodes.

                  I think they should get rid of Hirami… he’s lame, he did only 4 xD

                    Well, I made a database for Clamp no Subete with the xxxHolic Staff for each episode, so it was only a matter of copying numbers and looking in the database for the episodes summaries (although is was a good timing). ^^;

                    I’m afraid you’re right, even for the privilege drama CD, we have Yonote, Ohkawa and Sakurai working on the script. ¬_¬ It’s most likely a matter that Mizushima likes Sakurai as a co-worker and that Yonote doesn’t feel that safe outside of the original work’s limites.

  26. I can see them doing a second season without needing the crossovers, however, I don’t really see how it can be avoided forever. What if they get the okay to do a third season, which will be so far in that the crossovers will be unavoidable. =/

    I don’t see why they don’t just slip it in, like have the gang show up a bit later than they did originally. They could pass it off as being the time difference between the different worlds.

    …though Mokona would still be a problem. =/

    • I honestly think this is going to be the last season. If the broadcast starts on next April, it should end on October, and the manga will be quite near the end by then.

      As for Tsubasa’s links, I personally think they will be cut just like in the first season, and because of that, the anime will get more and more different than the manga, for the sake of having an original ending.

    though…if ohkawa was in the staff and the crossovers weren’t included

  38. Ahhhh!!!! This news totally made my day~! ♥♥♥!! The love! Although it is pretty inevitable (ooh!), considering how GOOD the manga story has gotten lately. To not make a second season covering the Spider’s Arc, Doumeki and Watanuki’s deepenign connection, and Yuuko-san’s overall yayness is blasphemy.

    Hopefully the second season will retain all of the elements that made the first watchable — a splendid seiyuu cast, a kick-a$$ opening theme by Suga Shikao (would his Phonoscope single be used for the opening? LOL), and a yay soundtrack. Also hoping they would keep the animation consistently good this time around!

    Anyway, thanks for conveying the news!

    These DVD sales are actually very high for anime series if you compare it to the other TV series. CODE GEASS is the year’s best selling anime series and it sells an average of 44k. While the hit TV show NARUTO sells less than 2k per volume now.
    I always thought they were high enough for a second season. I’m glad a second season have been given a green light. I can’t wait for more Dou/Wata moments! Thank you Chibiyuuto for making my day!

      And apparently, the series sold better than Tsubasa as well!

      Indeed the DVDs of XXXHOLiC sold really well, hence why they held a special event to celebrate the hit of the DVD sales. By then I was puzzle of why, then, they wouldn’t go on with the series.

    Will the second season have crossovers with TRC though, like Real!Syaoran appearing at the shop, or Sakura being in the dreamworld and Watanuki talking to her?

    • If that finally happens (the crossover I mean) it’ll be lovely. But I really don’t think so because in Tsubasa’s anime Yuuko didn’t appear so much, or not as much as in the manga. In few words, It’ll be wonderful, but I don’t think it’ll really happens. Nevermind, we can dream ^_^

  48. YAY~!! Second HOLIC season! It seemed such a crime that Tsubasa was allowed to continue into that train wreck of a second season, where as HOLIC, which was actually not bad, was left.
    I do hope that, now the contract with BeeTrain is presumably terminated, HOLIC will be allowed to have Tsubasa crossovers! I worry about the story changes if they’re going to try to continue without crossovers. The Spider lady arc and Himawari’s story will be great but crossovers get more frequent and inportant to the plot.

    Dear god I hope they’re covering the Spider Arc. I was slightly let down by the announcement that the animation previously reported turned out to be the Tsubasa DVD (far more a 104 shipper than a KuroFai, though I will love me some animated Tokyo), so this has absolutely made my week. A very meaty bone thrown to us Holic fans out there (now if Holic’s serialization becomes steady, my CLAMP life will be perfect.)
