First title page featuring the Yatagarasu! Very eerie title page… I like this character, I hope we’ll get to see more of them.
We got 16 pages on this chapter to compensate the long break!
I must say I thought this chapter would start with Watanuki on his room (since the previous chapter ended like that) but no, CLAMP still want us to feel his absence. This chapter he didn’t appear at all. We learn later from Seoritsu-hime that Watanuki has been locked in his room for 3 days…
The chapter starts with Seoritsu-hime looking thoughtful to what was originally Yuuko’s chair and now is Watanuki’s. Is she thinking about Yuuko or Watanuki? It could just as well be either.
Seoritsu-hime is having some orangettes that Watanuki had made before this whole mess — I’ve never had it and now I want to try it! I really like the combination of orange and dark chocolate :3
Seoritsu-hime is with Mokona looking at the backyard and she points out that the kekkai protecting the shop has been strengthened and that nobody can come in the shop without Watanuki’s permission — she kind of add that it’s “too late” now, but she also points out that the Fuuri cannot do much at this point. Should anything happen to the client that was taken, the Fuuri won’t be getting the Shuuka it so wants. Mokona mentions that it’s the same for Watanuki, to which Seoritsu-hime then wonders which side is going to make the first move. I think Watanuki will do something…. remember we still have the crimson pearl, the Book and the amber.
We are then taken back to Kohane, who’s still living with the fortune teller Obaa-san (hooray for Obaa-san still alive a decade later!)
Kohane is wearing a beautiful black and white kimono with peacock feathers prints near at the bottom. The Obaa-san immediately recognizes it as being Yuuko’s, and we learn that Watanuki gave it to Kohane although Yuuko herself had never wore it.
Did everybody forget about Yuuko after her time started moving again? I honestly don’t remember. Of course, Watanuki remembers her, and other characters with magical powers as well, but I am not sure if Kohane remembers her at all…
Obaa-san makes a beautiful remark about all feelings being valid when Kohane implies that her going to a shrine that grant wishes probably didn’t mean much. She went there and prayed for Watanuki, wearing Yuuko’s kimono. In fact, that shrine asks for an offering and Kohane left some of her own hair there. Her hair looks much shorter now (shoulder’s length). She looks very pretty and even more mature with this new haircut. They both talk about how this may not please Watanuki, but Kohane says she wanted to do it anyway because she couldn’t bare not seeing Watanuki and not doing anything about it.
It’s interesting how the Obaa-san refers to Watanuki (Kimihiro-kun) as someone who “takes care of the shop” — she still refers to the shop as Yuuko’s shop.
The chapter ends with Obaa-san talking about the “equal price” rule established by Yuuko in the shop, how Watanuki has always followed it, even though he may have suffered from it, and how that very rule could save Watanuki.
On the last page of the chapter, we see Obaa-san’s sand-reading divination tool showing on the sand the image of a feather.
What’s the meaning behind Obaa-san’s words? I know the first thought after seeing the feather in the sand is “Tsubasa!!!!!!!”, but we must remember that Kohane’s name means “small feather” and she had a Sakura feather inside her body. Keep in mind that this same divination tool in the past has showed a butterfly when she was reading Watanuki’s fate.
That being said, this could also be foreshadowing an upcoming Tsubasa connection. I mentioned a few chapters ago that I think it’s about time we see an update from Syaoran and the others, but for now I would keep my expectations at bay about a potential whole new Tsubasa series starting (as much plausible as this is). Alternatively, the feather could also be related to the Yatagarasu. Anyway, it’s a feather in a CLAMP manga — the possibilities are endless.
I’ve said this on my Bluesky and I’ll it here again: this chapter is so beautiful. It was almost entirely drawn by Mokona-sensei (who is in charge of female-looking characters) and the ladies look all so damn pretty!!
16 pages for this fifth chapter of volume 6. 84 pages so far for volume 6 — we’re halfway through volume 6!
Chapter 71 will come out on February 9th.
