It’s been a while since we last saw the Zashiki-Warashi lookalike (we still don’t know her name!) but she’s still at the shop. She seems fine, she is wearing yet another kimono and is helping Watanuki with dinner.
Seoritsu-hime is just like Yuuko so of course that means she got along with Mokona just fine (to Watanuki’s despair).
Watanuki seems surprised with Seoritsu-hime telling him that she knows about him only up to a “certain degree”… (she has a satisfying expression when she says that).
After quite a while, a new client arrives! This is a shop after all, right? The client says that her fiancé who had been dead for a month now is coming to her house every day. Creepy. He is doing things he used to do when he was alive and when he goes to bed he asks her “Where is that thing?”
Creepy!
She killed him, if you ask me!
We know rule number one in CLAMP universe is the dead don’t come back to life, so it must not be her husband as she knew him… and we don’t know what happens later — does he go to “work”? Does he disappear and come back again the next day? We also don’t know what Watanuki told her — he is narrating the events to Doumeki after he had already talked to the lady.
The dead returning to life seems to be a recurring theme for XXXHOLiC Rei so I wonder if this will be a case within a case. We now have: the real Zashiki Warashi case, the Zashiki Warashi-lookalike case, Seoritsu-hime’s case and now this new client’s case — not to mention the amber and the crimson pearl. Are they all connected?
Two things I would like to mention before wrapping this up: 1) Watanuki still has the wound on the left side of his face he got when summoning the Book. It’s very visible on this chapter’s last page. It was already there since the previous chapters but I hand’t noticed. Love to see CLAMP paying attention to these little details ♡; 2) completely random, but I think we might have a glimpse of the Tsubasa gang in coming chapters. It doesn’t have to be anything very substantial (or another WoRLD CHRoNiCLE arc), but they are still out there and Mokona is here, right? I am sure it misses the other Mokona from time to time…
Another set of 14 pages for this chapter. 132 pages so far for volume 5.
XXXHOLiC Rei is a biweekly serialization, however, there’s probably a break ahead since Chapter 62 will come out only on July 18th (which is a Friday, not a Monday as typically for Young Magazine). July 21st is a national holiday so maybe that’s why… I see exactly what you are doing, Kodansha. You want to release XXXHOLiC Rei vol 5 with CLOVER CPC, don’t you?

I do think it is him as she knew him, but creepier, as you mention, because he is dead… CLAMP’s rules for the dead are, at the same time, both absolute and kind of a mess, but in xxxHolic the dead can linger as spirits for indeterminate periods of time, until someone like Kohane or Doumeki exorcises them and sends them to the beyond.
Yes, I think that the wound being very visible as he speaks of “that thing” is related to the case. Or maybe to something that can hurt Watanuki in future chapters
I don’t know… Watanuki’s time passes very fast compared to the Tsubasa gang. Let’s assume, just to estimate, that it passes at a rate of five to one. Watanuki has been taking care of the shop for more than a hundred years, and thus, Syaoran must have been traveling for more than 20 years… By this point in the timeline Syaoran should already have paid his price, and he should be free to stop traveling and return to Sakura (maybe even had some children with her), just as Watanuki is free to leave the shop but chooses not to (and maybe, just maybe, Syaoran chooses to keep traveling in support of him). So, I don’t think we will see much of them unless they reeeeally stretch the time difference between dimensions 😛
Also, my hypothesis is that Himawari is a VERY old lady and thus was able to join the new Doumeki and Watanuki in the dream at the beginning of Rei.
I loved the last few chapters too: Watanuki dreaming of shattering Yuuko’s butterfly, then casting a divination spell for searching what he was missing to win and help the Zashiki Warashi, Doumeki holding Watanuki’s glasses because he expected some type of violence with said spell, the unexpected appearance of Momo and her treatment to Watanuki (she is a sassy queen as you say, haha), Doumeki naming her a very purifying name, Momo butting into Watanuki’s “dream” with Haruka (Watanuki is so powerful now that he can enter the dream world whenever he wants to, and Momo is so powerful that she can see Watanuki’s “dreams”), the badminton match with Mokona, so reminiscent of Yuuko and the return to the horror themes of the original manga in this last chapter.
It has been a roller coaster of emotions, and a great continuation to the series. The wait for the next chapter will be long this time, but nothing compared to the hiatus.
Lastly, I want to mention that a lot of things are “gathering” at the shop for Watanuki to achieve his wish, and this includes the damned egg that can make him forget about Yuuko, so we better get prepared for drama at the climax of this manga T_T
