Beautiful title page featuring what seems to be “Yuuko”. Is she a bride? Or a ghost? The archways behind her look like wings coming off her back…

I noticed that ever since XXXHOLiC Rei returned we are getting a new title page every chapter, whereas before some chapters did not have a proper title page. I wonder if this is because now it is a biweekly serialization… I love title pages so I am not complaining, but that does mean one less page of story development each time…

Watanuki si feeling the burden of involving Doumeki with the whole book affair and is chatting with Haruka about it, in a dream. Watanuki must know that the book has great powers and the people involved with it might have to suffer consequences. Still, as I mentioned in my previous review, Doumeki’s blood has purifying properties so for plot reasons it must be important that Doumeki should be the one naming the book. Also, “Momo” must know about this. But of course, Watanuki will be Watanuki and will worry about getting Doumeki involved in something that can be dangerous.

Haruka wonders whether “Seoritsu-hime” refers to the entity that purifies the impurities of Hayakawa river or a jealousy Hashihime. To be honest I did not understand the connection he is doing here… maybe it’s beyond my very limited Japanese folklore knowledge.

“Momo” (maybe I should start calling her Seoritsu-hime) awakes Watanuki from his dream and tells him she is not the jealous type. Just as I thought, she is behaving just like Yuuko (same energy).

Watanuki asks her if she can travel across dreams, to which Seoritsu-hime replies that it wasn’t the case, she was just peeking through his dream. Since he was the one who summoned the book, Seoritsu-hime can “understand” him up to a certain point (similar to the dynamics between Kaito and Momo).

Then, Watanuki stars asking some QUESTIONS. Questions that us, the readers, would like to have answers to, as well.

Watanuki asks if Seoritsu-hime is the book itself (like a manifestation of a book), to which she replies yes, this time around. She can separate herself from the book in the form of a mascot (!) but there is no need to do that within the store premises. Is her mascot form always a bunny? Or does it also change depending on the circumstances?

Watanuki then tells her that she was created by an extremely powerful magical “being” (could be human or otherwise), to which Seoritsu-hime agrees, and then he asks her why was the book created and what can it/you do — here, CLAMP are using the kanji for book but with an ateji/furigana written “you”, implying that Seoritsu-hime and the book are one and the same.

Seoritsu-hime replies that nothing can be created out of nothing. There must be a compensation or a price, and that’s what kind of existence she/the book is — here again CLAMP are using the kanji for book but with an ateji/furigana written “I”, implying that Seoritsu-hime and the book are one and the same. This makes me think that the book is not only associated with time magic. It can be used to grant any kind of magic, it seems. Kaito needed it to perform a time-related magic, and so it behaved as such. Maybe that’s why it had clock hands and now it doesn’t anymore… =0

So the book is like a “pocket” version of the shop, huh? It can grant wishes, sort of… it seems…

How will Watanuki use the book? Will he sign the contract just like Kaito did?

Another set of 14 pages for this chapter. It seems like 14 page is what we will get every chapter, except opening volume chapters. 118 pages so far for volume 5.
