The egg makes yet another appearance. The egg is still a thing, it’s still a thing. If the events of “Rou” happen after the events of “Rei”, then we won’t be seeing Doumeki using the egg anytime soon. But if the events of “Rou” are a future in which Doumeki chose to never use the egg (it’s a theory), then maybe we will end up seeing him using it in “Rei”…

So amusing seeing Watanuki talking to a book “sitting” on a chair across the table xD

One Japanese reader pointed out in Chapter 58 that the book was missing its clock hands. Since there was only one page in which the book appeared, it was not clear whether this was intentional or if it was a mistake. In this chapter, the book appears several times and it’s still without its clock hands, which means it’s not a mistake and it is intentional…

It’s interesting how Watanuki still does not sees himself and the shop’s owner. I can’t remember if he introduced himself in this way in previous chapters (it’s been YEARS T-T) but in his mind, Yuuko is still the shop’s true owner. I wonder if this will play any role in the future (or maybe it’s already playing…)

OF COURSE the book knows about Yuuko. Watanuki is the only one shocked xD

The book even throws some shade (of course) that Watanuki should have predicted its arrival considering Watanuki is a yumemi. Sassy as usual xD

Watanuki replies that he still a yumemi apprentice. This is another indication that not so much time has passed since the events of the original XXXHOLiC (excluding “Rou”). I assume Watanuki would probably have mastered his yumemi skills if many years had went by…

The book throws some more shade to Watanuki’s choice of attire. Watanuki replies that he just dressed something that caught his attention this morning… I guess the book expected something more “up its level” xD <– another indication that Watanuki is a “sorcerer in the making” and has not fully evolved as a magician.

The book says that it will stay in the shop for as long as it is needed, until “that moment comes” — indeed very much like what we would expect from this book, which belongs to no one in particular.

Of course, the book also “understands” everything there is to understand about Watanuki’s name when he tells it (as if the book didn’t know his name already xD)

The book not only knows about Doumeki’s presence but wants him to be the one to name it (akin to how Akiho named it Alice in Clockland in Clear Card). Watanuki is a bit uneasy about this, but agrees anyway (it’s not like he could do much about it anyway).

After some thinking, Doumeki names the book “Seoritsu-hime”, which is a goddess of purification as well as the goddess of water and rain, and plays the role of washing impurities down rivers and the sea, according to this website. Doumeki would know about this goddess given his family background and also his university studies.

Doumeki himself also has the power to purify evil spirits so it only makes sense that the book wanted him to name it. Maybe this will “boost” its purifying abilities.

And there she is!!! Momo! (should we still call her like this?) She looks the same, but different! Her outfit is different to suit XXXHOLiC‘s style, but it’s still black and white (she is the solo guardian of the book and therefore she holds both ying and yang magic, light and darkness). She doesn’t have her bunny ears!!! The bunny ears were part of her identity as “Momo” but she is no longer called like that (it was never her true name to begin with). Again, here I am assuming that the events in “Rei” take place after Clear Card, even though we can’t be sure of that…

So, Momo/Seoritsu-hime assumes her shape according to the situation, the book’s name and other circumstances. Still, her “general” features are still the same (haircut, mole etc). It would be cool if she’s featured in the next color illustration, please, CLAMP!

So she will be staying at the shop for a while??? This will be INTERESTING. And maybe it won’t be necessary for her to have a “mascot” form as a disguise? I mean, if she’s staying in the shop, she might as well stay like this looking like the Queen she is.

Some drawings of Seoritsu-hime I saw online show her with a dragon… I wonder if there is anything to do with the dragon amber…hmmm.

Didn’t Zashiki Warashi need one hell amount of purity to wash away all the evilness within her world? Do we have everything ready to begin the purification ritual?

And an afterthought, I think “Momo” and Yuuko’s personalities are very similar. So I see what you’re doing here, CLAMP, adding some Yuuko-flavored spice to this story xD

And to be seen if “Kaito” and “Akiho” will soon appear since they are looking for the book, and for “Momo” (again, assuming that the events in “Rei” take place after Clear Card).

Another set of 14 pages for this chapter. 104 pages so far for volume 5.

XXXHOLiC Rei is now a biweekly serialization, therefore Chapter 60 will come out on June 9th.
