Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations – The Magician’s Message

First things first, which means I’m going to talk first about the OP. Well, to say it short, I LOVED it xD I always loved CLAMP’s magic sigils so is very nice to see them getting proper attention. I’m sure the OP looks like that because they didn’t have much time to work on it since they were probably focusing on the episode itself, but it was an excellent, economic idea to use the magic circles.

Yui Makino’s song is nice except for Yuki Kajiura’s choir at the beginning. Don’t get me wrong and I don’t mean to offend anyone who likes Yuki Kajiura (I know you are a lot! xD), but I really don’t like her choirs xD

The backgrounds are just amazing. I had noticed it before in the screencaps, and the real thing only confirms it. It’s definitely one of the best things of the OAD. I was quite worried about it, they could easily ruin the “beauty” of devastated Tokyo, but they didn’t… it looks so well and so real. They look like they are inside X’s anime or something xD

According to ANN, Biho Co., Ltd. did the background art. Well done!

The entire sequence when they enter the Metropolitan building is one of my favorites. Starting in the very first scene when we see the corpses lying all over the place. There’s a great impact and the blood looks so real… very faithful to the manga.

Then we have Syaoran meeting Kamui’s gang. Loved this scene also. I read that, in the premiere event, Nekoi said her favorite scene was Syaoran avoiding the arrows, because it was a scene with great movement, and I couldn’t not agree with her, it’s great. And the introduction of Kamui’s team has such a great atmosphere. I love the music in here (one of the few tracks I like from Tsubasa’s OST). You really do fear those people, it’s like “Who the hell are they?”

And then Kurogane’s theme-song plays and the whole mood is thrown downwards XDDDDDDDDDDD *anime flashbacks: nooooooo! @_@*

But later Kamui comes in, with all his beauty, and everything is worth watching again xD

The battle between Kurogane and Kamui is sjkdghsjkgak! SO SMOOTH~! They’ve kept Kamui’s graceful movements perfectly well, so that I could watch them fight for hours *-*

WE GET TO SEE THE TOWER, WEEEE! only it’s foot, though And it doesn’t appear originally in the manga, weeee! Did Ohkawa put it in there, did she? I hope we’ll see it again (hardly…)

The water reservoir looks dorky, though XD

People will probably throw stones at me for saying this but, I thought the talk between Kurogane and Fye extremely boring. I don’t like the color scheme of that scene either, and because it’s a heavy-dialog scene, it’s barely animated *avoids stones*

Isn’t Subaru’s voice quite strong? O.o

The flying motorcycles look so cool~ xD

If the introduction of Kamui’s team was cool, the introduction of Fuuma’s team was completely anti-climatic. They simply arrived like they were some random people, no great impacts here…

Then we have Kamui and Fuuma’s fight switched for here… and Fuuma looks completely off, by the way xD In fact, all of them look a little weird during this entire “outside” sequence. Some shots even reminded me of the dreaded Tsubasa Chronicle. I could bet anything you want this sequence was finished 1 day before the premiere session xDDDDD

The final 5 minutes are very intense. There’s a lot of things happening at the same time and the focus keeps changing between them. I liked it. I like the song here also, but again, without the choir (the choirs always ruin it xD)

Mokona’s “mekyo” eyes look so plain!

Real!Syaoran looks cool~! *grows affection* He’s so big and his feet are detailed xD

Xing Huo appears so little… I can’t wait to see her dead body on the next one xD I don’t like the “rainbow” colors or her magic circle, though. Didn’t look good.

Annnd he arrived at Yuuko’s shop. Yuuko looks good, in my opinion.

I also liked the ED, quite a good idea to show them leaving Tokyo, and at the end a single shot of what might come later: Infinity (which will hopefully be animated as well).

Overall, I really really liked it! I wasn’t disappointed with it, much on the contrary, it quite reached my expectations. Of course, it wasn’t 100% perfect, and all of my complain is related to the animation. It was great, much more improved than the horrible TV series, but there were still some characters who looked a bit distorted (Kurogane and Fuuma, specially) and some entire scenes were compromised due to low-quality animation (Indeed BeeTrain’s name is in the credits, have they really touched anything in this? ¬¬). But the animation was mostly quite fine, some drawings are exactly the same as of the manga, and the backgrounds were amazing.

The script was flawless, if you ask me *completely vulnerable when it comes to Ohkawa* No, honestly xD I mean, everything just flowed very natural. It’s a lot of material to condensate in 22 minutes, she did a great work. The only thing that she changed which I thought was a little unnecessary was the arrival of Fuuma’s team. I don’t see the point of doing it, and that made Kamui go hunt with the others while in the manga he stayed to watch over Subaru (isn’t it what Kamui would have done?) Anyway, I think she knew what she was doing xD

Overall grade: 9/10!

I want The Boy’s Right Eye right now!

Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations curiosities:

I was able to find this really interesting interview with Takuya Matsushita, who works in the rights department at Kodansha.

In the interview, we learn that the idea of making the animated version of Tokyo arc first appeared in a meeting regarding the future of the anime version of Tsubasa between Matsushita, CLAMP and the editor in charge of Tsubasa. CLAMP expressed their wish to animate the arc and how it couldn’t be aired on TV due to the network’s policy. Matsushita was then astonished with the idea.

“Leave it to me”, and he took the task.

He mentions the difficulties of producing an animation without a TV network sponsoring it. The DVDs of Tsubasa had grossed around 10 million yens in sales, and apparently, that budge was not enough to release the DVDs as single units (I’m not 100% sure about this part, though).

Matsushita had managed the sales of Chobits’ manga before, and he remembered that it’s limited first edition (with a Chii figure as privilege) had sold over 50.000 copies in a single day.

That was it, he realized all he had to do was to attach the DVDs with the limited first edition of the tankoubon.

As he proposed the idea to the sales department of Kodansha, however, a new challenge was born: to sell at least 20.000 copies. If that mark is achieved, the profit would be covered.

The project was accepted and when Matsushita told the news to CLAMP, their faces suddenly lit. Matsushita was also the one who requested Ohkawa to write the script for the animation in order to fully reach the fan’s expectations. Fans would have to spend 3000 yens to purchase the DVD, if it fails to reach their expectation, they would hardly buy the next one.

On the day after the announcement was made, over 10.000 results appeared on search engines if you looked for the words “Tsubasa” and “Tokyo”. Matsushita was surprised.

“I want this..”, “I really enjoy sensei’s scripts”, “Yatta! I’m buying it, I’m buying it!”, were among the search results.

2 months later, over 30.000 reservations were made for the limited first edition of Tsubasa #21.

***

Really interesting article, isn’t it? It reveals a lot of details about the publishing industry. Of course, this isn’t like a proper translation or anything, but it’s basically what the article says xD

Basically, if we are having the Tokyo arc animated today, it’s all thanks to this guy. And I owe him another bow for asking Ohkawa to be in charge of the script *heart*

EDIT: The amazing people at Shinsen-Subs have already released their subbed version of the first Tsubasa OAD. You can get the torrent via this link or through their mIRC channel.

  1. Okay… This really bothered me, and I don’t know how I never noticed it in Bee Train’s animation of the story, but is SYAORAN REALLY THAT SHORT?

And I was in love with Miyano Mamoru’s voice. Beautiful voice actor, spectacular job.

Can’t wait for the next one.

  2. “Isn’t Subaru’s voice quite strong? O.o” Yes, it is ! Bikkurishita yo !

“If the introduction of Kamui’s team was cool, the introduction of Fuuma’s team was completely anti-climatic. They simply arrived like they were some random people, no great impacts here…”
I agree too (they arrive and go back so fast oO…Fûma didn’t really look strong). I prefer their introduction in the manga.

I like the OAV, but I think the rythm of the episode was no good. I think a more dynamic rythm would match (fit ?) better (sorry, if this sentence isn’t in good English…I can’t find a way to say what I want).
But I love the batle between Kamui and Kurogane *w*
I just think, it was too short XD This OAV is the story of tankoubon 15,the introduction of the Tokyo Arc…and as this tankoubon, the anime left me…”hungry”. I wan’t to see what would happen next (I know it already but I want to see it animated (and well animated).

To finish,Kamui is kakoii, I totally love it ! Mo hitori no Shaolan…is sexy ! (< I didn't think I would say that about Shaolan). And I like the final picture of Shaolan and Sakura.

    • Indeed, I was hoping for a more soft, gentle voice.

      >I prefer their introduction in the manga.

Me too… it looked a little weird xD

You didn’t like the rythm? Really? Oh that’s weird since it’s exactly what I liked about it! xD Strangely enough, I think it’s very dynamic ^^

      >But I love the batle between Kamui and Kurogane *w*

      It’s my favorite scene~

It was too short, that’s true xD It has the lenght of an average anime episode, I want more ._.

      >Mo hitori no Shaolan…is sexy !

LOL! I have to agree with you XDDDDDD I’m man enough to admit that xD

  3. I was literally having a fangirl attack over my keyboard while watching this OVA, particularly during the Kamui v. Kurogane fight scene. I was kinda sorta amazed by how smooth the fight scenes were, oh God. >.< And the art in general just looked beautiful. I might have stones thrown at me here, but I am so glad Production I.G is doing the OVAs instead of Madhouse. O=

THE FINAL IMAGE GIVES ME HOPE. I like to tell myself that it's the producers way of saying, "DO YOU WANT THIS BB?!?! 8DDDD" And the fans go, "YES PLZ." And then the end of the final one will be the opening to Infinity and fans will all, HELLZ YES. 8'D" And all will be right in the world.

Takuya Matsushita, eh? After hearing about what he has done for us fans, I kinda wanna marry him. *0* Thank you so much, Matsushita!

    • I’m not throwing stones at you because that would be so un-nice xD But even though P. IG made a good job with this OAD, I’m sure Madhouse would have done even better.

YES YES THAT’S EXACTLY IT! It was completely on purpose just to tease everybody and make them wish for a continuation. It’s all part of a strategy XDDDDD

      Matsushita is the man ^_~

      • I think Madhouse would have done better with keeping it close to the manga, because obviously, as close as this adaption was things were still a off, but… to be quite honest? After seeing Madhouse’s take on the TRC art in CLAMP in Wonderland 2? Oh. God. No. That was just… so incredibly fugly I just… no. >.< I think the best thing that could've happened would've been for the two companies to work on it together but alas, that's asking for too much. But I think I'd take this OVA than one animated by Madhouse. DDDD8

And because of how long Infinity is, it'll be fit into one OVA that'll just be extended and it'll end with them going to Celes. Yet another tease! But in the long run a pretty clever marketing ploy. D8

          • Which is strange, because they animated Cardcaptor Sakura very well (most of the time). O_o
In CiW2, CCS!Sakura and Syaoran were adorable, but the whole Tsubasa gang seemed weird, didn’t they?

            Like

        • I was quite pleased with TRC’s design in CIW2 myself, so. All I can do is feel very happy for you, for having the OAD animated by the way you wanted ^__^

If you think about it, Infinity isn’t very long… there’s a lot of battle sequences and even though it takes a lot of pages to draw them, on screen they look faster. I think two OADs can cover Infinity (it’s shorter than Tokyo arc).

          Like

          • Indeed. 8D

I remember when it was first announced that Tokyo was going to be covered in three 25-minute OVAs everyone was wondering how it would be done but to me it always made perfect sense. There are a lot of fight scenes in Tokyo that took awhile in the manga because it’s panel-by-panel but it goes by so much faster when animated. So yeah, one or two OVAs should be enough for Infinity. The one that worries me a little is Celes. Because HOMFG, that is a long, long arc.

            Like

            • It’s heavily dialog, Celes… But I think they can release Inifity + Celes in another 3-DVD set.

Infinity is 2-tankoubons long, and Celes is 1-and-a-half tankoubons long. Tokyo is 3 and a half long… it’s the biggest arc so far.

              Like

              • …is Celes really that shot? D8
My God it felt like so much longer. Because of all the flashbacks and the dragging on and on and on. Even towards the end when it got to all the fighting it still just dragged. =/ I figure if they at least include the opening of Infinity into the end of Tokyo REVELATIONS, even as the ED sequence, they’d be able to get the rest of Inifinity done in at least one OVA since, again, most of that is action based.
…but then again, I failz at math so my mental calculations could be off on an epic scale. XDDDD

…I really just want to see the end of Infinity animated. The Syaoran v. Hikaru fight and everything after was awesome. 8DDDD

                • I know! I was surprised myself too! xD

                  >Because of all the flashbacks and the dragging on and on and on

I think you’re right, because of all that it feels like it was long… celes is an INTENSE arc.. I think that’s why, also.

Soon they will call the “Tsubasa Series of OADs” xDDDD

                  Like

                  • I was wondering about that, actually, what they’d call any sort of OVA continuation. XD Calling the Infinity, Celes, and Nihon + arcs Tokyo REVELATIONS would be a bit… off. I vote they just change the title back to Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE. XD

Celes is intense and confusing. Very, very confusing. XD Honestly, though, I feel it would be a bit… less confusing to see it animated because it would be more of constant flow instead of chapter by chapter revelations.

                    • Oh no, they will have to find a new name. For example, “Infinite Blizzard” XDDDDDDD (it is JUST a lame example! I would hate that name xD)

I went on Saturday, November 17th and could not buy a copy (my roommate- who speaks Japanese well- went later and found out that the only copies left were already reserved, but perhaps more will be in stock next week.)

Chobits’ manga before, and he remembered that it’s limited first edition (with a Chii figure as privilege)

The first Chobits volume omake was a Chii figurine? Really? I remember it being a mouse-pad– how I covetted it! XD

    • >Hmmm, that article is interesting– business techniques of oavs!

I KNOW! I always love to know about what’s behind the process of making a manga into animation. And it’s amusing how everything has to do with money xD I bet CLAMP themselves aren’t really thinking about it, but that’s all Kodansha can possibly think of xD I guess that’s how things are ^^”””

      >though I bet it wasn’t *enitrely* because of that guy who said to leave it to him. Other people worked on it too! XD

Oh no, definitely not! But from what I could understand, he’s the one who “pulled all strings”. But yeah, there were surely more people involved.

      >The first Chobits volume omake was a Chii figurine? Really? I remember it being a mouse-pad– how I covetted it! XD

Oh, I don’t think he mean the 1st one specifically. It was volume 7 that came with a Chii Figure. I think he mentioned that one in particular because it was the most expensive one: 2625 yens. Quite near the OAD’s price.

Sorry if I wrote in a misleading way (I wrote “first edition” meaning “first print”).

When I read it, I was slightly puzzled… why the hell would she like such a “normal” scene? But I see what she means now ^^

    >There really wasn’t anything that I didn’t enjoy in the OAD though except for super minor things.

    • HAHAHAHA hang right there xD I’m not really making any comparitions here xD I don’t think it’s the case, but yeah, Xing Huo’s circle was one big mistake… and it’s clear in the manga, I don’t get why they changed it to the moon one o.o

          • No, in CLAMP in WONDERLAND 2. O_o Clow’s Magic Circle didn’t appeared, there was Sakura’s magic circle instead in a Clow card.

Yukito’s magic circle is morelike a variation of Clow’s magic circle, but using the power of the moon. This was the same one that Xing Huo used this time. What does it mean…?

            Like

            • Ah, I thought you mean 2nd time within “Tsubasa” (because indeed, they haven’t messed with Yukito’s).

              >What does it mean…?

Are you asking me what does the circle mean or why they changed it? XDDD Either one of them, the answer is: I don’t know XDDDDDD

I think they saw the circle in the manga, and someone in the staff remembered that it had appeared before in TC. Then that person sneaked into BeeTrain’s studio and grabbed the sheet with the circle drawn on it.

It’s hell hard to draw that circle, it’s must easier to just take a copy which is already done XD

They aren’t hardcore fans who would think “ah, Xing Huo’s power comes from the moon so her symbol must be based on the moon”.

That’s my version of the story XDDDDDDD

  10. In my opinion, the OP was the worst I’ve ever seen. I thought the song was OK, but the spinning symbols made me dizzy and I thought it was boring. For TV animation (and most OVAs), the Op is supposed to draw you in, so I was expecting something exciting (maybe even a Mokona drafted OP!). The ED was impressive, even if it’s mostly just a pan shot of the Dragons. They should have switched the animations around and made the ED the OP.

As for animation, I was half impressed and half disappointed. Close-ups looked good, but there were a lot of scenes which I thought were just ugly (usually distant shots of the characters), especially the sand worm things. They looked really awful! Also, why can no animators draw a nice looking Mokona?? Except Clamp in Wonderland 2, I’ve always been disappointed in his/her animation, even more so in this production. She was much too oblong and funny shaped. Also, her ear was weird looking in one scene. And I thought Rayearth was bad.

Hopefully the animation will improve, but usually the first and last ones are the best looking of the bunch, so not a lot of hope for the next OAD.

I thought the op was quite nice, it had a nice feeling even if at the end you know it was that way because they didn’t have enough time XD
the animation…the most awesome thing about it was the backgrounds because they had beautiful colors and they were so realistic…but the action scenes where my favorites, they were so smooth and cool…and of course there were frames where the chracters looked kinda BAD…but I forgive that
    and I cannot complain at all to anything that yuki kajiura composes *kajiura fan* I love chorus, sorry xDU… I noticed she just arranged SLIGHTLY different some of them…but they were the same, but I guess that it had to do with the really short time they had. I hope the people who bought it won’t be disappointed! (I’m not…only by super stupid things) so we can keep having new oads!…I want to have tsubasa’s end animated ;__;

  12. Your reviews are always so thorough without giving out too much detail I like them so much.

However, one thing did bug me greatly in this OAD, the casting. Kamui’s voice was OK, but Subaru’s was horrible. It’s the fourth actor that plays Subaru and in my opinion, this one was the worse. If I didn’t know already Subaru’s appearance, the image built in my mind would be completely different and I would be thoroughly disappointed.

All in all, I loved this OAD, it wasn’t the greatest thing I ever watched but it was much better than all that filler crap in season two.

I loved the OP song, but I could have lived without the Kajiura choirs in the beginning, I actually am one of those who likes her soundtracks but in the opening it seemed like a bad mix job.

The body proportion seems different, their hands seem bigger and Fay seems stoned some of the times.

All in all, I really enjoyed it and I want the rest.

That’s true… it should be way more soft than that.

      My thoughts exactly ^^

    And you told that outdoors scene was finshed one day before the premiere, that explains a LOT! And yes, why is Kamui with Syaoran, Syaoran is expected to dive and find Kamui there…. ?¿?¿?¿?¿ Fuuma, poor guy, he had no time to show his crappy hair potential ;_;

and don’t worry for the stones, the KuroFay scene is a bit too long and unaniamted…. at least it ends with the ‘armgrab’, if not it would be BORING! Actually the Kuro’s rape attempt in the bed where Sakura is is much funnier ^___________^

      • The KuroFaytards anger will fall over you if you dare to talk bad stuff of the pairing XDDDDD (and even if you did, would be your opinion, I SHOULD never annoy you for it ;_;)

Nah, seriously, it was a bit too long… They used the same exact script and I think they had have to rewrite it… the main problem of the ODA is that it does not cover the main subject of it, the ripping-eye-moment. And I don’t see how thay can fit all the missing stuff in only 44 minutes…. they lost too much precious time in the first chapter.

        Like

        • Really? I thought she managed to fit a LOT of stuff in 22 minutes o.o I think she covered over 120 pages or something.

I think the second OAD will end after Subaru awakes and the clone leaves.

          • yes, she did, but those pages were the intro… how to explain this, it lacked more action, the only action is at the beggining… if at least had finished when Syaoran is gonna fight Kamui, but not… RITHM is the word, the rithm and pace was not ok enough… to me at least.

            Like

            • I definitely enjoyed the rhythm, those 22 minutes flew by so fast!

But if it’s action that you want, the next one is yours xD We have Kamui and the clone, R!Syaoran and the clone, Fye and the clone and even a bit of Kurogane and the clone xDDDD

I hope Ohkawa doesn’t cut the scene with Kamui’s arm getting chopped off, and I hope they revamp that dorky reservoir of theirs xD

              • yay! I know that the next two ones will me the ones I’ll love ^__^and again, I’ve been thinking how is that the 3rd time I saw it (subbed and sunday) I liked it more, I think my mood influenced the ‘watching’ moment. But still it was not what I was expecting, I had a TOO high expectations, the BEST had been a whole movie, the thing that pisses me a LOT is having to wait 2 months for more T_T this is gonna be a torture…

    *snorts* It is? Oh my…

  15. I agree with basically everything that you said, your complains are the same as mine.

But I actually thought the hair on R!Syaoran’s face looked good xD

We just differ a little about the music. I don’t really like Tsubasa OST.

  16. I know a lot of people are saying that Subaru’s voice is bad, but it was kind of distorted by a dreamy echo, so it might sound deeper than it actually is *shrugs*

My favourite bit was when R!Syaoran got out of the tube XD And when Syaoran got shot in the leg, I actually flinched ^^

Course, none of it was a patch on CLAMP’s gorgeous art [although the backgrounds were lovely] but it was so much better than the TV series. Give me Production IG over Bee Train any day!

    • Well, I didn’t really think his voice was “bad”, you know? It didn’t annoy me at all… I just thought for a sec “Hang on, that’s supposed to be Subaru’s voice… but it’s so deep!”

But like I said, I wasn’t “bugged” by it, it just surprised me ^^

      >My favourite bit was when R!Syaoran got out of the tube XD And when Syaoran got shot in the leg, I actually flinched ^^

I liked those two scenes too! Can’t wait to see the clone piercing R!Syaoran’s leg ^^

      Yey, that’s awesome! ^^

      >And… was it just me or was Yuuko really cool, although she didn’t really do anything? XD

I thought she looked cool! Better than in XXXHOLiC, I daresay.

  17. Besides for Subaru’s voice, and the crappy art at the end, and the disappointing introduction of Fuuma’s team (why couldn’t they just leave it like it was in the manga?) this OVA was amazing!!

And I agree with you on the backgrounds. It was gorgeous throughout the whole OVA.

    Now I wish it were January. Why couldn’t they realize all three episodes in one DVD? ;_;

  18. imo, the majority of the X people had weird voice casting. -__- satsuki’s voice especially…too high, i think. i always imagined her to have a more masculine voice…(maybe thats just me?)

but all in all, it was amazing. my sister was even more convinced theres something wrong with me while i was watching. XDDD though animation faltered at times (ooh, how the nightmares of beetrain attempt coming back to haunt you…), the majority of the time, it was absolutely gorgeous. i could totally see what you meant by the backround art. biho, i thank you. *bows repeatedly*

but to Takuya Matsushita, i go on my knees and bow numerously. XDDD

even if kurogane looked sorta off in the attempted rape(XD) scene, i died when he got on the bed. and rewatched it several times. SAKURA, YOU LUCKY BASTARD!!

I’ve said this a thousand times, but the backgrounds really were eye candy.

  19. i like it, even when there are a few things that could have been done better, and despite they were really wrong with Syaoran height (C´mon, Kamui was suposed to be about the same age, AND was always said in X that he was really really short for his age. Syaoran was never called short, not in CCS, not in TRc, so i´m really disapointed with that in the OAD)
I agree with Nekoi and you: the arrow scene was great, and also KamuivsKurogane fight. I really love the way Kamui moves! But the best entrance was Realsyao. He looks so GDM cool!!! oh, my!!! i think my love for him has increase even more^-^. Also, the last image, with clonie, was really nice, and i´m sure they are testing if that´s the fans wish , or if we bet for sakura to be with realsyao instead. in my case, i cant decide. those evil women makes things really difficult, i love both, REal and Clone!!
Ah, cant wait to see next one. the fight between the tube-boy and the eye-eater. See you!

Good point xD But Syaoran is slightly younger than Kamui. Kamui is 16 and Syaoran is “around” 14. R!Syaoran’s size was just perfect.

      >i think my love for him has increase even more^-^.

      Same here xDDD

  20. Thank you for the link and the review chibiyuuto-san! ^^

I loved Subaru’s voice! :3 I thought it seemed quite soft and sounded so sad and dreamy and lost *angst-fangirl sigh*

The Kamui/Kurogane fight was indeed beautiful but Syaoran dodging the arrows is probably my 2nd favourite scene so far. The movement really was amazing!

I thought the talk between Kurogane and Fye extremely boring
Here here! It was so dull! And there was practically no tension! Also I was hoping they’d animate that scene using the same “camera” angles as in the manga… so much of the angsty drama was lost here because of shoddy angles 😦

Though, I think my favourite part has to be Kuro releasing Fai’s arm and his stumbling backwards and sliding down the wall. They really captured that moment of vulnerablity well!

I give it an 8/10 because I still don’t like Daisuke Namikawa’s voice acting :/ though the smooth movements and art prettiness were both nicely done ^^ (although Kuro’s head looks so small lol)

      I agree 100% ^^

      >Though, I think my favourite part has to be Kuro releasing Fai’s arm and his stumbling backwards and sliding down the wall. They really captured that moment of vulnerablity well!

Once again, I agree with you. That movement was neat.

      >because I still don’t like Daisuke Namikawa’s voice acting :/

You know, sometimes he DOES annoy me too! Not only him, in fact. The entire Tsubasa cast sometimes annoys me a lot… specially Mokona and Sakura’s seiyuus.

      Like

      • Lord, yes! Mokona’s is somtimes as bad as nails on a blackboard :/ And Sakura’s seiyuu sounds so weak. But then I think the anime totally took away so the life that the characters had in the manga. All animated Sakura seems to do is make shiny eyes and say “Syaoran-kun” breathlessly 😡 Bah.

As you can see, I do not harbour a strong dislike of the anime series at all! ^^

  22. Yo, Chibi-Yuuto!! As always, I enjoy your lovely commentary reports. ^^ After watching it, I really have to say that I enjoyed it so much!! The opening sequence with Yui Makino’s song was the best. The colors on the magical circles are beautiful. The ending sequence was well done and the Infinity shot really surprised me! Of course, every scene was very good and well done – especially the Syaoran and Kurogane scenes. Syaoran having the fancy footwork of avoiding the arrows – nice!! But, what really was amazing was the fight of Kamui vs. Kurogane. It was way awesome!! ^o^ A true way of showing the art and style of fighting.

Of course, the scene of Kurogane and Fai’s intense conversation from Chapter 112 was very lovely. It doesn’t matter if Fuuma was completely off, he was way cool and I screamed with excitement when he showed up. ^///^

The final 5 minutes are very intense.

NE!! *grips her Syaoran plushie very tight*

However, I definitely have to agree with you that the final scenes with the real Syaroan was TOTAL LOVE!! I really admired the great details of his appearance and when he showed up in the rainy Japan at Yuuko’s shop… OH HOLY MOKONA!! He really stole the show and made it exciting. I just hope that on the 2nd Tsubasa OAD, he keeps the excitement going on!! Fangirl “Squee” Level: Meltdown Alert!! >///<

Hontou arigatou gozaimasu for this fun commentary report, I had a great time reading it as always!! Now I can't contain the excitement of waiting for the 2nd Tsubsasa OAD: "The Boy's Right Eye". Let 2008 come already, ne!! *tries to contain the excitement*

    Ki o tsukete, Chibi-Yuuto!

  25. Better late than never, eh, Yuuto-san?

Quite a good OVA, all in all. In retrospect it seems to make a lot of sense to me that Clamp would decide to place the central chapters of TRC in Tokyo, since it’s so important to so many of their works (if not all of them). And I repeat, that whole outside sequence is ripped straight out of Frank Herbert’s Dune, in the OVA I don’t think the animators even tried to make the wormy-things look any different from the sandworms in the Dune movies. But that’s forgivable. I also enjoy how in Tokyo country, the acid rain has been falling “for 15 years”–i.e., since the publication of X began.

Some parts, though, did remind me too much of the anime, especially when Fai was being cutesy. Stop being cutesy, Fai! And finally, I also agree that the sequence where they enter the Metropolitan building was one of the best, especially since they did a really good job of animating it to make it look exactly like it does in real life (and having just been there, I have to say that seeing it filled with bodies in the ova is a bit unnerving). Right, until next time!
