XXXHOLiC #7

Finally the long-awaited episode scripted by Ohkawa-sama !

Let’s get straight to the point then.

When Ame Warashi hits Watanuki: Watanuki funny movement #1 XDDDDDDDD

I was hoping that Ame Warashi would have her own track of the soundtrack, but they used the same one from previous episodes. On Ame Warashi, I think she’s perfect ! Her seiyuu is amazing, I thought her voice would be a bit more high-pitched, but this grave one sounds better now that I see it.
About her hair, I don’t know what’s up with it (ie. I don’t know why CLAMP drew an image with her hair being blue, just in order to make it look more artistic, I guess), but I’m not complaining, I already got used to it. I would prefer it to be blue, of course, but apparently, Zashiki Warashi’s hair is blue so I’m fine ^^”

So, I loved Ame Warashi, she’s the big star of this episode, certainly, and my favorite parts are definitely the ones she’s in. I loved all the pouting, all the aggressiveness, the bossy-ness, and also the sweetness of her.

When Ame Warashi shows she knows his name and asks him for a favor: Watanuki funny movement #2 XDDDD I love that, the poor guy just happens to bump into a crazy girl who he never met before, she knows his name even so, and on top of that, she asks for a favor XDDDDD The oddness was perfect.

At the shop, when Maru, Moro and Mokona are passing around and Ame Warashi follows them just with the eyes, you can tell by her face that she’s thinking “…the people who live here are nuts” XDDDDDD

When Yuuko and Ame Warashi are doing their business, Yuuko kept saying “my” Watanuki, and I wonder if that means Ame Warashi (or even Yuuko) knows OTHERS Watanukis O.o There certainly is one Watanuki for each world, we learned that from XXXHOLiC and Tsubasa, but I just think that all this “my” Watanuki thing is not only to piss Watanuki off, who was overhearing the conversation.

This scene I loved as well, btw, how Watanuki gets CRAZY (he even bumps his head on the floor, OMG XD) because Yuuko is doing ALL the business for him, and I love how she makes sure to show how she’s not caring at all whether he’ll like it or not XDDDDDD

I loved the scene where Ame Warashi hits Doumeki and Watanuki for calling her a “spirit”, she suddenly changes her mood from “ahh~ such a good smell” from “How dare you call me a spirit” XDDDDDD And the face she makes is just priceless.
I liked how Watanuki makes a whole big deal of it while Doumeki just puts his hand at his head to relief the pain, and just adding “That kinda hurt” XDDDDD
It’s a BIG shame Ame Warashi will not show up again so soon, she surely makes the trio Watanuki/Doumeki/Himawari a LOT more interesting. Bossy girls just rock XDDDDDDD

When Ame Warashi says that both Doumeki and Watanuki can do the trick: Watanuki funny movement #3 OMG what is that? XDDDDDDDDD

Doumeki talking to Himawari: Watanuki funny movement #4 This is the biggest of all XDDDDDD Definitely Icchan’s true son !

I was re-reading this arc and I noticed something that I had kinda of forgotten, how Ame Warashi also fears Himawari because of her name. That would explain Yuuko’s first impressions in episode 2 just by hearing her name. It got me very intrigued, too, Ame Warashi wanted to avoid being influenced by her just because her name means “sunflower”, hummm…

Moving on, I’m glad Ohkawa-sama (much love to her) kept the whole “We have this, this and that” of Ame Warashi’s XD I love that piece from the manga because it shows how she treats human beings as if they were “things” XD

Also very funny the fact that Doumeki folds his ear everytime Watanuki yells XDD (just like in the manga).

On the sequence underneath the Hydrangea:
I don’t know if it’s the very bad quality of Mishicorp’s version, or if it’s really like that, but I was hoping the surroundings would be darker. BLACK, in fact, just like in the manga. I hope when Shinsen’s version is released, it’ll be darker.

About the little girl, I thought her voice sounded a little too matured for well, a little girl. I mean, you can tell her seiyuu is NOT a little girl. But maybe that’s the point.

Now, when the Hydrangea is speaking, WHAT IS THAT? Just perfect !!! *-* I was very curious to know how they would make that particular bit, you can easily ruin it, but I couldn’t be happier with the result. I can tell it must have been really hard to make that scene, because the sound editor has to perfectly match the time when the light bubble opens and closes, to fit the sound in it. I’m very satisfied with it ^__^

When Watanuki brings her body up, Fukuyama strikes again with the sweet side of his voice. And the skeleton is there, not as creepy as CLAMP’s one, but still shocking those who are seeing it for the first time.

We get a better look at Doumeki’s price than the one we got in the manga, and I wonder if it’ll be of any importance in the future. I wish Yuuko’s treasures showed up more at the series, be of more use as well. And the bat is intriguing….

Watanuki trying to thank Doumeki: Watanuki funny movement #5 XDDDDD What the hell !

And yay, Ohkawa-sama also kept the reference to Zashiki Warashi ! I was so expecting it to be cut since it was related to the Valentine’s thing.

Watanuki crying at the end, curious to know who is interested in him, was so funny XDDD Long life to Fukuyama Jun !

So, the episode was excellent again, definitely among my favorites so far. The script, copying Ali-chan’s words, is flawless. Apart from the Tsubasa links, EVERYTHING else is so faithful ! It really felt like the manga itself was being animated (you know, when you flip a book in order to animate it XD) rather than a normal adaptation. Which is excellent, always. The tiny references and details were there, like the Nobita and Zashiki Warashi’s reference, like the wooden board under Ame Warashi to prevent humidity (I love that piece XD), Ame Warashi was very well represented in general. Long life to Ohkawa-sama, and bring on her next episode !

The animation is also another good thing, one of the bests so far for the series, I loved the hydrangeas, also.

Good points:
– Faithful to the manga
– Good animation
– Ame Warashi is perfectly good in ALL aspects
– Watanuki’s funny movements XD
– The Hydrangea’s voices effect

Bad points:
– The place underneath the Hydrangea is not dark enough (but I hope it’s just a quality matter)
– The little girl sounded a bit more mature than what she appears to be

But, believe me, these bad points are not even that bad, just a couple of things that I noticed me when I was watching it.

Staff for Episode 9 – Promise:

Script: Yoshiki Sakurai (Ep 2, 5, Movie).
Storyboard: 松園公 (couldn’t picture his/her name).
Episode Director: Shinsuke Terasawa (Ep 4)
Animation Director: Suzuko Nakano (couldn’t find any info).

  1. It was my favourite one this far. The hydrangea’s voices were p-e-r-f-e-c-t, and every little detail was exactly how I had pictured it in my mind! Now I can’t wait to see Zashiki Warashi too. ^^

Eu tb to preferindo XXXHOLiC à Tsubasa, e a diferença é gritante.

No momento eu to só vendo Tsubasa e XXXHOLiC msm, eu naum tenho tempo pra seguir outra série @_@

      Bjs !!

  4. …where did we learn that there is one watanuki per world? i’m confused!! i was under the impression that he was unique. though i agree with your comments completely, except for the darkness under the hydrangea, i don’t think it was a quality thing, i think that was just the way it was. but we’ll see. hooray for this anime, it is so good! ^_^ it really puts beetrain in the shade…*cough cough*

    • Yuuko said it herself to Watanuki in vol. 2, when she was explaning that those Syaoran and Sakura were different than the ones directly related to Clow.

      >i think that was just the way it was
I hope it’s just a -bit- darker than Mishicorp’s version, though XDDD *wants completely darkness* I think that’s the coolness about XXXHOLiC, the color contrasts.

    • The translation is very annoying indeed. I can’t wait for Shinsen’s version to make the reviews because they would come really late XDDD But they are definitely the best.

About the video, yes I’ve seen it, oh how I’ve seen it XDDDD
      Thanks anyway ^^

  6. I must say that I really love Fukuyama Jun. He consistently does great work as different characters in other animes (those which may or may not be so great XD), so I am glad he was chosen to voice Watanuki because he is -great- at it.

  8. Yuuto-saaaaaan!!!

Well, Watanuki is even better than in the last episode (I want his seiyuu for meeeeeeeeeee!!!!!! XDDDD). I don´t really care about Ame Warashi´s hair. I love red. And Ohkawa-sensei probably approved it.

What I like about this episode is the way Ame Warahi treats people like things. “People treat the deities like things and they don´t deserve anything better than that” must be what she thinks. Of course the way she treated Watanuki and Doumeki (who are at least “respectful” to the things of the other worlds) was pretty harsh, and that implies that she got so disappointed with the human beings throughout the ages (they are “not grateful to the rain” according to her) that she treats them like she would treat all the others (with some exceptions like Yuuko). Ame Warashi respects Yuuko so much that I strongly believe Yuuko doesn´t have the age she seems to have. How did she get all that respect from the deities in a short human lifespan? Everybody seems to know her very well and from a long time… That´s something I´d like CLAMP to explain until the end of the series.

Ame Warashi´s “They don´t care about us, so why should we care about them” was just priceless. It shows and criticizes the way people forgot about divinity nowadays (Yuuto-chan, this is for you: “How about remembering your divinity?” – Alanis). CLAMP, of course, is not the first to show this problem, but I liked the original way they created to show it. This theme is probably going to get stronger on the next episodes (like the manga) and many better things are on their way, I hope.

The scene with the hydrangea talking through those “light drops” was just TEH way it should be. Watanuki´s assisting troubled spirits is really nice and that makes my theory about Watanuki´s inheriting the shop even stronger. But it´s really strange, since Watauki deals with dead people when Yuuko´s customers are usually alive… Does that mean that Watanuki deals with the dead ones since he is not able to deal with the living ones? Let´s face it, Watanuki´s relationships with real people are horrible, not to mention the fact that Himawari-chan, Doumeki and Yuuko seem to be the only people in his life…

I´m gonna stop here and continue on developing this topic on the next review.

    See ya

    • I also love the way Ame Warashi treats people as things XD It’s funny AND there’s a big concept behind it which you explained very well.

      >”How about remembering your divinity?” – Alanis
There’s NO better way to represent that idea ^____________^

Yuuko is such a big mystery and I HOPE CLAMP will reveal more about her. She’s the kind of character in which you can’t know everything about otherwise the big magic behind her will fade away. It’s good to have not-everything revealed.
Her age, her past, her family, you don’t know nothing about it and yet you believe in everything that she says xDDDD She has credibility.

About Watanuki assisting the sprits, maybe it has to do with his blood… the same way the evil spirits think he’s “delicious” maybe the good spirits feel atracted to him. Besides that, I think dealing with the living people must be way harder than dealing with the dead ones, don’t you think? XDD

I couldn´t have said that better myself. CLAMP rocks ^^v

        >dealing with the living people must be way harder than dealing with the dead ones, don’t you think? XDD
Yes, but Watanuki has really few friends. It´s not normal to talk to only three people regularly…. The “people in gray” emphasise that a lot in some scenes.
