We continue straight from where we left off in Chapter 71 with Watanuki and the white female figure.
She explains to Watanuki that just like the shop, she can also grant wishes for a price. So this is the kind of entity she is and this is the kind of help Watanuki needs from her. It’s not her diplomacy but rather her actual wish granting powers.
The white female figure can tell what Watanuki is wishing for and she tells him it’s not an easy wish to grant and that he cannot grant it himself in his current state — does his wish have something to do with leaving the shop’s premises? I wonder if it’s something physical like that or if the wish is too powerful for Watanuki’s current magic skills. She later adds that the wish is a difficult one even for her, which makes me think it could be related to magic skills.
She decides to test Watanuki to see if he is worth of having his wish granted. She asks Watanuki to tell her name that was hidden in the message from Papa Kitsune, to which Watanuki responds “Masaki”. We learn that is her name.
This is from a specific legend from the book “Nansou Satomi Hakkenden” by an author called Kyokutei Bakin. In the legend, Masaki Gitsune is a powerful nine-tailed kitsune who became a wet nurse for a boy. Although the book is a classic, it might not be the first name that comes to mind when one thinks of nine-tailed foxes and yet Watanuki managed to decode the correct spelling after doing extensive research on writings about the kitsune clan in the shop and more importantly: based on his own intuition.
Masaki quickly adds that she never nursed any human beings, as the “Hakkenden” book suggests, but she doesn’t mind being seen as a sacred beast. I like how CLAMP are not necessarily strictly following the character created by Bakin, but rather creating their own version of Masaki, who did “meet” Bakin and became the inspiration for his story.
Although she did not seem much impressed, it appears that was enough to make Watanuki pass her test. She assures him that his wish will not hurt any kitsune or their relatives, but she does warn him that he is the sole responsible for the consequences. Watanuki is of course fine with it.
The chapter ends without telling us what is Watanuki’s wish (this sounds extremely familiar). Masaki can see right through Watanuki and since he is a good kid who can’t lie to a soul, I’m pretty sure he fell into Masaki’s good graces.
Another character in the CLAMP universe that can grant wishes! Kohaku, Yuuko, Watanuki, Fuuma (that one has twisted outcomes, though) and now Masaki! Did I miss anyone?
14 pages for this seventh chapter of volume 6. 114 pages so far for volume 6!
Chapter 73 will come out on March 16th.
