First black and white title page of volume 6! Is this Zashiki Warashi or the lookalike? It could be either…

It’s Kohane!!! Long time no see her. I believe this is the first time we see her in Rei after the world created by Watanuki (for Syaoran and the others) disappeared. In fact, I’ve been waiting to see her, because she is an important piece of the puzzle to understand the timeline of Rei and Rou. She looks older than in “classic” XXXHOLiC and about the same age as we saw in the beginning of Rou. And it’s really her and not her offspring (like we saw happening over and over with Doumeki). So the Rei timeline seems to be sitting somewhere between the beginning and the ending of Rou, or maybe a little before Rou. This is how the timeline looks like to me:

XXXHOLiC -> XXXHOLiC Rei -> XXXHOLiC Rou

But Rei could also sit somewhere in the middle of Rou:

XXXHOLiC -> XXXHOLiC Rou (beginning, vol. 16 of XXXHOLiC) -> XXXHOLiC Rei -> XXXHOLiC Rou (ending, vol 19 of XXXHOLiC)

Anyway, Kohane looks beautiful! She is talking with Doumeki and Mugetsu at Doumeki family’s Shrine. He is filling her in about the latest developments and he tells her that per Watanuki’s orders, he destroyed the earring (which was used as a communicator) and asked for him and Mugetsu to avoid seeing Watanuki and visit several shrines (to purify themselves) before returning to the shop.

Before leaving, Doumeki tells Kohane to ask Himawari to not call the shop for the time being. Even Himawari is mentioned! We still haven’t seen her in this timeline at all.

Seems like Watanuki is doing a full cleanse after the Fuuri fiasco.

Back at the shop, Mokona, Maru and Moro (wearing neatly mirrored outfits) are discussing Watanuki’s situation. Mokona tells them that Watanuki is feeling miserable not only because he was defeated by the Fuuri, but out because the Yatagarasu “outsaw” the future before him.

Maru and Moro are being sympathetic towards Watanuki, but Mokona is slightly more firm, to the point of saying Watanuki doesn’t need kindness at this moment, basically reflecting that Watanuki has now to face the consequences of becoming the shop’s manager, which was something that he decided by himself — now, about that… I don’t remember exactly but did Watanuki even have a choice? Still, I like the message that Mokona is trying to give here, that we need to be responsible for the consequences of our choices/actions.

And, we got the confirmation from Mokona that it’s been a little over a decade since Watanuki took over the shop, which also sustains the argument that Rei happens before the ending of Rou.

The chapter ends with a spread showing the shop completely surrounded and wrapped by strips full of spells and Watanuki sitting alone in his room.

Watanuki messed up, and I like how CLAMP are showing that there are consequences for messing up. He is not taking this lightly… and he shouldn’t.

I like that we got some timeline answers in this chapter!

12 pages for this fourth chapter of volume 6. 68 pages so far for volume 6.

Chapter 70 will come out only on January 19th.
