Wow! One of the most beautiful title pages of XXXHOLiC Rei since its return, perhaps one of the most beautiful ones of the entire XXXHOLiC series. It features the “couple” Yosuzume e Yamainu! It’s been a while! I like seeing some old faces returning in title pages.

Watanuki and Doumeki are having some treats (Suzu Castella) that the Oden Fox-kun brought. Okay, since when there are so many lotus flowers at the shop backyard? This is new to me. Also the small pound in the middle. I don’t know if it has always been there but I love it. The whole scene with the table and the parasol with the long ribbons is such a MOOD.

Last chapter I mentioned the absence of Kuda Kitsune and voilà, here it is! Fox spirits were the main topic of last chapter so it makes sense to me for Kuda Kitsune to make a reappearance.

We see some typical bickering between Watanuki and Doumeki while Kuda Kitsune treats itself to some fine sake.

I was very curious to know what Watanuki asked Doumeki to take from his grandfather’s warehouse. Kuda Kitsune reacts sharply upon seeing the package and Watanuki uses what appears to be drops of water (but it could be some sort of nectar?) from one of the lotus flowers to open the package — very smooth and mystical. As payment, Watanuki lets Doumeki drink some fancy Awamori sake that Doumeki had apparently been wanting to drink. Remember: this object was asked by Watanuki to Doumeki in order to help the client who is having visits of her deceased husband.

It’s worth saying that Watanuki mentioned that he hasn’t met Haruka in his dreams lately… just like Haruka told Watanuki: he wants Watanuki to figure something out by himself.

Later that night, still at the shop backyard, Seoritsu-hime is catching up on recent events with Watanuki.

We find out from Seoritsu-hime that the drops of lotus flower that Watanuki dropped on the vase that came from Haruka’s warehouse was actually a spell and that Doumeki and Kuda Kitsune were sent by Watanuki to “catch” something with it. Seoritsu-hime seems a little concerned whether they will be able to perform the task…

The scene changes and we are taken to Doumeki and Kuda Kitsune, who are on the streets at night. Street scenes have become rare now that Watanuki cannot leave the shop.

Doumeki asks Kuda Kitsune what I personally asked myself in Chapter 63: did the fox spirits consulted Kuda Kitsune when they said that the Kitsune clan would not go after the Shuuka? Kuda Kitsune nods vigorously.

They are still talking when something that looks like a large ayakashi appears on the other side of the street wall, ambushing them.

Is that an ayakashi? Is that what Watanuki wants Doumeki to catch? Will Kuda Kitsune/Mugetsu “fight” against that thing and then “capture” it inside the vase that was taken from Haruka’s warehouse.

This time we got 15 pages instead of the typical 14 pages. This was the last chapter of the upcoming volume 5, which should be released in November (that’s my guess).

The next chapter will be the first one of volume 6 and will have color pages!

XXXHOLiC Rei is a biweekly serialization, but Chapter 65 will come out only on October 6th. According to Young Magazine, this is because they will prepare the tankoubon release in the meantime.
