I know it’s almost the end of the month and Chapter 39 is almost among us, but it’s getting harder and harder to review these chapters with the lack of English translations available. Terribly sorry for the delay but here we go!

The title page shows the two “Alices” in a direct link to Akiho’s mother’s last words to Nadeshiko in Chapter 36.

It was rather amusing, to say the last, to see Mirror-san struggling to put up with a convincing image of Sakura.

Very attentive readers were able to notice the mistake on the Sakura cards Syaoran is holding on page 5, which look transparent. It will likely get fixed on the tankoubon version.

I love the fact that even in that situation Sakura just so happened to have an outfit made by Tomoyo (that she was planning to bring back to Tomoyo per her own request). This is CLAMP giving Sakura a battle costume for every occasion. Literally.

Did I mention that Mirror was making an extra effort to put up a convincing image of Sakura? As usual it failed epically with Touya. Attentive readers as my friend Cinzia/Sakura84-chan may have noticed how Mirror isn’t blushing when Touya approaches her up close on page 12, while it would probably have been drawn that way if this was published in the 90s. Could CLAMP be toning down Mirror-san’s crush on an adult while its shaped as Sakura?

Sakura is fully aware now that she’s creating the cards, she asks herself if she’s the one who created the strange flying creature, which is good, but it’s still not clear to me whether this changed anything in the whole process.

Kaito then confirms that it was her who created the creature/card and he also clarifies that it was him to turned her into small, not a card as I first thought.

What a clever thing to use The Shadow card to follow Sakura’s shadow (I could never think of that xD) — way to go, Syaoran! This also triggers Sakura to secure the card in a similar fashion as she captured The Shadow (in the manga version, lol).

Kaito believes that Sakura created the card because she was unconsciously reminded of the Jabberwocky from “Through the Looking Glass” book as she got tiny. Yet another Alice in Wonderland reference. Kaito originally intended her to create “that card” by turning Sakura small but alas, she created another one instead (SHADE).

I love that Sakura realizes a little too late that she could have used REPAIR to fix her uniform xD The battle costume has had its purpose, it’s okay to realize that now, Sakura-chan.

I love how Momo saw right through Mirror-san and realised it was a card. It will be fun to see how it will go with Mirror-san at Sakura’s school. I believe Tomoyo will probably help a lot.

So the chapter ends with Sakura flying away AGAIN, for the second time in a row. Let’s see how she will get off of this, considering that The Big is an anime-only card ˆˆ”

We are up to 18 Clear cards. There are theories that there would be 19 Clear cards to match the total of Clow/Sakura cards. If that’s the case, it means there is only one Clear card left. We’ll see.

The updated list of cards secured so far:

  1. GALE
  2. SIEGE
  3. AQUA
  4. ACTION
  5. REFLECT
  6. RECORD
  7. FLIGHT
  8. LUCID
  9. SPIRAL
  10. SNOOZE
  11. LABYRINTH
  12. APPEAR
  13. BLAZE
  14. MIRROR
  15. BLADE
  16. REPAIR
  17. REWIND
  18. SHADE

Anime-only cards:

  1. GRAVITATION
  2. HAIL
  3. REVERSAL
  4. MIRAGE
  5. SWING
  6. STRUGGLE

29 pages for this chapter, again. 115 pages for volume 8 so far. Next chapter will be the last one for volume 8.

  1. Always happy to see a new CCS post from you, Alex!

This month’s color page was so gorgeous! I can’t wait for the artbook announcement whenever it comes, ahaha.

Mirror and Akiho were the highlight of this chapter for me. I wonder if we’ll get to see poor Mirror struggle through math class and cheerleading practice next.

Sakura’s coat looks great here, too, even though it’s such a simple concept so far as Tomoyo’s costumes go. We got another bizarre translation for the new card’s name this month: 影像 literally translates to “silhouette,” with the adding meaning of “an image projected onto a surface.” Even the original Japanese name doesn’t quite fit the nature of the card, since SHADE doesn’t seem to be anything more than an aggressive version of Shadow? (Only four out of the 18 Clear Cards made their appearance without attacking, trapping, or otherwise harming something, versus five of the original 19 Clow Cards. The main difference here is that the Clow Cards make decisions for themselves, whereas the Clear Cards are supposed to represent Sakura’s own unconscious thoughts and feelings…😬)

I’m actually beginning to feel sorry for Kaito, given how he’s had absolutely no success tricking Sakura into making what he wants. 😂 It’s become more and more clear that he wants some kind of “restoration” card that can completely and permanently revert one person to a prior state of being. The only question left is why he hasn’t tried asking Sakura for it directly, especially now that he knows she’s aware of her problem. Does he really have so little confidence that she can control her powers? Or is there going to be some kind of unforgivable cost involved with creating the card?

The number of Clear Cards really snuck up on us, huh? We’ve had enough foreshadowing to suggest that Sakura is going to make an Earthy knockoff, which would bring the total up to 19, but how would that fit into this current situation, I wonder? I don’t see Kaito letting Sakura go without making at least one more card, and it’s hard to imagine why she would think of something earth-based right now. I hope we’re due for some kind of shakeup in the “Sakura creates card, Sakura secures card, Kaito says it’s not the right card” pattern.

      That’s interesting, thanks for sharing!

Hummm to me it feels more like something that would “advance/fast-forward/move” things? I don’t know, by making Sakura tiny, he thought she would create a card that would “advance” her time and make her “grow” @_@

It seems so. But that doesn’t seem to be the card Kaito wants… so we’re talking about more than 19 cards?

I hope so too. We’ve had enough of that.

I’m positive that we are only 11 chapters away from the ending so we better start getting some ANSWERS.

It’s either we’re getting more than 19 cards, or Sakura will somehow stop making new ones? For example, if she manages to make the card Kaito wants, he’s going to enact his plan (whatever that is) right away, which would definitely put an end to the normal story cycle. On the other hand, if Sakura realizes that each new Clear Card pushes her power even further out of her control, she could decide to stop “securing” them and find some other way to neutralize them. (We’ve also got Touya, Nadeshiko/Akimom’s pendant, the Mysterious Voice, and Whatever-It-is-that’s-Keeping-Syaoran-from-Touching-Sakura as other potential forces that could prevent Sakura from making cards as usual, but all four of those are up in the air right now. For all we know, Syaoran was shocked by the owner of the Mysterious Voice, who is actually Akimom, who is actually possessing Touya.)

You and me both. Let’s get this wrapped up and done with!

Amen to that! They probably need at least 5 chapters to deal with the climax stuff so it should be happening real soon.

There is also Yukito and Nakuru at the Tsukimine Shrine. They are up to no good there.

          I’m sorry, what? LOL
