The seventh volume of Card Captor Sakura ~Clear Card arc~ debutted at the 2nd position in Oricon’s weekly ranking, with an estimate of 98,089 copies sold in its first week of sales.

These numbers are for the regular edition, only. Numbers for the special edition (Drama CD part 1) are unknown as it did not appear on the ranking.

While these are the series’ 5th lowest first week (only topping first weeks of volumes 4 and 2, respectively, which were lower), I have a strong feeling that the main reason for that is that the special edition must have affected these numbers.

Volume 7 was up for pre-order many months prior to its release date so it is likely that the orders for the special edition were spread across the many weeks before the release date. That is, of course, just a personal guess.

It is worth mentioning that Oricon only takes into account a certain number of shops. These numbers are only an estimate and it’s possible that the real figures are higher than these.

It’s still early to know. Let’s wait and see how it will perform on next week’s ranking. Hopefully this is not the last we’ve seen of volume 7.

  1. Thank you for always sharing the sales report! 😀

I also think that those numbers are not quite accurate in the sens that if we added the special edition sales, I think the total would be way higher: a CD Drama with an original script by Ohkawa is a really attractive thing to own as a fan, and I saw countless people online who, just like me, preordered their copies months prior the release date, just like you said.

      • How do you know? Oricon charts of CDs surely never worked this way (e.g. AKB48 have very long pre-order periods but first week sales are number of CDs shipped in that week, not number ordered in that week), so is it something particular to books?

        • No, I didn’t know. Could you tell me more?

So you’re telling me that Oricon does take into accounts pre-orders? Given that it takes into account everything that is shipped, rather than ordered?

          • That’s always how I understood it. AKB/Nogizaka singles have a very long pre-order period, but the first day sales on Oricon often reach close to a million because that’s the day the CDs go on sale and are shipped. Amazon Japan’s rankings reflect pre-order numbers and rank items before they’ve gone on sale, but to my knowledge, not Oricon. I’m a bit too lazy to go read their methodology though…

            • I see. The mystery remains. I’m curious to know their exact methodology. Would love to know more about that, and it would help my posts.
