What a lovely title page! But I was expecting a spread, somehow. Nadeshiko looks so beautiful and angelical, and I love how it seems there are only flowers under her dress. CLAMP are really into gradient coloring as of recent years.

So we didn’t get to see Nadeshiko interacting with Sakura at all. We were cut to the scene at school in which Sakura wonders about seeing her mother. The panel from last chapter in which Nadeshiko is vanishing looks rather abrupt. I have a feeling that CLAMP might add an extra page for the tankoubon release where can see that clearer.

Was I too naïve to hope for a Nadeshiko x Sakura interaction? I wonder when/if Sakura will be powerful enough to do that.

Sakura questions herself that last time she saw her mother it was the doing of a card, but this time around she felt it was different…

Sakura looks so beautiful with this hairstyle! It’s a shame that she got to wear it for such short time! Do this more often, CLAMP!

oops, quite a lot of white space dedicated to Akiho’s family and her loneliness. Then, once again we are reminded of all the unlimited warmness within the CCS universe. Such kindness! Such warmth!

Syaoran’s profile pic in the instant chat app is a small wolf? I died.

SONOMI! ❤ YAS GAWD! She looks so pretty in CLAMP’s current style. I love her so much, haha

I love the fact that she owns a freaking high tech company but her landline phone is a vintage one. This small detail tells so much about the kind of woman Sonomi is: classy af!

So this chapter we get to see the return of Sakura’s great-grandfather. I did wonder if we would be seeing him again. Surely we would. This might be his only appearance in Clear Card since he is said to be going on a “business travel overseas” — aka CLAMP’s excuse to leave him out of the story for a while.

It looks like Masaki grandfather heard about Syaoran (from Sonomi?) and wanted to meet him. I say I didn’t expect anything less from him. The whole scene was very adorable and I’m sure the SyaoSaku fans are happy.

The scene with Tomoyo and Sonomi was amusing because usually Tomoyo is pretty smart and figure things out on her own but she was a little slow to figure things out this time. At least Sonomi was there to give her some light — Sonomi is, after all, the woman behind Tomoyo’s maturity. I also want to point out how the interior of the Daidouji mansion looks like Suu’s cage in CLOVER. Can’t wait to see that animated to confirm my suspicions.

Finally, it seems like Kero and Yue have finally realized that Eriol is hiding something. I mean, really guys? I expected more from you.

No cards have been secured on this chapter. We will see the continuation of Sakura and Syaoran’s meeting with Masaki on the next chapter since he wants to give “something” to Sakura. I am curious as to what it might be — surely something related to Nadeshiko?

The art was gorgeeeeeous on this chapter. ☆SUTEKI DESU WA!☆

The updated list of cards secured so far:

  1. GALE
  2. SIEGE
  3. AQUA
  4. ACTION
  5. REFLECT
  6. RECORD
  7. FLIGHT
  8. LUCID
  9. SPIRAL
  10. SNOOZE
  11. LABYRINTH
  12. APPEAR
  13. BLAZE

A big yay for 30 pages this time! This chapter opens volume 5. Let’s hope the next chapter won’t get a big drop in page numbers.

Next chapter will be out next month!

  1. The artwork and layouts for this chapter were amazing. They really drove home all the different emotional beats — Akiho’s loneliness, Sonomi’s confidential mother-daughter chat with Tomoyo, Sakura’s joy at getting a text from Syaoran, and even the awkwardness of Syaoran meeting Sakura’s great-grandfather for the first time.

Kaito watching TV shows while he cooks is so hilarious for some reason. Does he watch soaps, too?

This was a very sweet and thoughtful way to bring both Sonomi and Masaki back into the series. It’s nice that Sakura now knows Masaki is her great-grandpa — it’s a sign she’s been maturing and getting treated more like a young adult off-page.

Yue and Kero have been incredibly useless this whole arc, so it would come across as weird and petulant if they tried contacting Eriol and upbraiding him for not doing enough to help Sakura. I’m interested to see how this shakes out, though, especially since the readers are aware by now that Eriol isn’t up to anything nefarious (?). Will Eriol pick up the phone if they call him? Will this bring up some old emotional wounds related to when Clow changed their memories to keep them from finding out the truth about his death? If they find out the truth, will Yue and Kero ultimately decide that they, too, have to keep Sakura in the dark until “the time comes?” ; )

Also, what’s your guess for the color scheme for the cover of Vol. 4?

    • Now that you mentioned it, I can’t remember if we ever got to see in the manga Sakura learning the truth about Masaki. Was it shown in Sakura Card arc? I can’t remember. I completely took it from granted that she always knew but no, she didn’t know it on their very first encounter.

If they find out the truth, will Yue and Kero ultimately decide that they, too, have to keep Sakura in the dark until “the time comes?” ; )
That’s a good question and if Syaoran is hiding it too, they would probably be on board too.

Also, what’s your guess for the color scheme for the cover of Vol. 4?
Oh, good question. I say purple but that’s not based on anything, just a wild guess. What about you?

      • Sakura never found out during the Sakura Card arc, no. It must have happened sometime during the interval between the ending of the original series and the beginning of the Clear Card arc.

I’m guessing either lemon yellow or lavender. CLAMP seems to be paying attention to which colors would look best next to each other on bookshelves. XD

        • So she never found out. So it must have happened in the gap. Thanks for confirming =)

They sure pay attention to their book designs!

      • On the last chapter of tankoubon 8, Fujitaka did say Nadeshiko’s grand father was still alive and she gave him valentine chocolate every year, with nadeshiko flowers. When Sakura arranged the gift with FLOWER, she saw Sonomi come and pick the package for delivery, so she guessed the grand father was the one in common between Nadeshiko and Sonomi. On the next chapter, the first of tankoubon 9, Masaki and Fujitaka offically make up, overseen by Nadeshiko’s ghost.

There was a full year between the 90s and 2010s series, I would guess they had a few official family meeting, probably with Sonomi and Tomoyo, in the year gap. Maybe we will get more info in the next chapter or in the anime.

  2. I was waiting for your post regarding the manga as I cannot keep on track about its updates myself yet.
But guess will keep that way, it’s more interesting to see the manga raws first, then the translation and then your resume.
Anyway it was a pretty cute chapter, I did not….expect Sakura’s great grandfather in the manga at all. I thought the time from the original manga he has appeared back then was pretty adorable despite his weird fortunately now overcame disliking towards Sakura’s father.
Reminded me of mexican soap operas :3
Oh yeah and Tomoyo’s mom! Isn’t she amusing as always? Definitely not a boring lady. And making Shaoran to go visit the great grandfather together with his girlfriend was a cute sly move from her ahahahaha
Sure it was so unlike Tomoyo to not realize about her intentions in first hand. But for a while I did thought strange she doesn’t notice Shaoran’s hiding behavior either. She used to be good figuring that stuff!
And yup Kero and Yue are a bit slow as well. But can’t help to see how adorable Kero was helping Yukito and all. Wanted to see them interacting alone for a while.

    • Thanks for waiting for my chapter review, Ana. That made my day hahaha

Sonomi is awesome on so many levels. We need more Sonomi.

Hahahaha true that! But watch her going “I knew it all along” when everything gets revealed.

  3. LOVE this chapter!! i feel that i actually enjoyed a non card chapter. sakura seemed more mature in this chapter too.
sonomi!!! love this character. wish there was more of her. she reminds me of yuuko, particularly in this chapter.
syaoran meeting the great grandfather was so unexpected but thoroughly enjoyable. i imagine those two being like two peas in a pod ^^ ohhhh why do clamp have to send him on a business trip for several months. i want to see more of that dynamic that sonomi and great grandpa bring.
hm as for kero and yue being useless this arc, they sure have been so far ^^; but i feel like yue would have it all figured out within one or two chapters if sakura (aka clamp) let him. he’s been pretty sharp when given the chance.

  4. Beautiful title page once again with Nadeshiko in color for the first time this series. Only Fujitaka and Kaho missing (although I would take a better picture of Eriol and Clow).

So nothing new about the ghost, except for Sakura to somehow feeling this time it’s different. -__-
Anyway, Fujitaka sure didn’t notice. Maybe Sakura is the only one who can see her right now and her mother is trying to reach her out?
Hopefully we will get the answer next chapter.

The girls luching together are cute as always, but where are the boys? And will we ever see the summer uniform? xD
Yuna is definitely adapting well, although I would guess he doesn’t seem too familiar with Japan, even though he talk the language quite good…
The conversation also confirms that Akiho haven’t seen her family since they are on the world trip, did Yuna kidnapped her? xD
She would be totally under Stockholm syndrome. xD

More bentou love this chapter! ^__^
Sonomi! We missed you since that lone frame in chapter 13! Classy taste even for her home phone, as expected! ^__^
(I have one that look the same in my house, if only I could make it works again *sigh*)
So change of plans, the bentou date become the formal introduction with the great-grand-father.
Can’t it get anymore official that Xiaolang is now part of the family? xD
Different house than in book 5, probably his main house. I don’t think we have seen it yet.
Now that I think about it, in both the Clow Card series and the Clear Card series, Masaki appear on tankoubon 5. Coincidence?

Back to Sonomi and Tomoyo. ^__^
I would guess tomoyo may not know her great-grand-father as well as Sonomi, she’s good at understanding her classmate feeling all right, but she’s probably not this close with Masaki. She may not have thought he would go as far as arranging an informal meeting with Sakura’s boyfriend before an more official dinner, because she never witnessed his relationship with Nadeshiko. They were already estranged years before she was born. Sonomi on the other hand is seeing long gone patterns Masaki had with Nadeshiko, transposed to Sakura.

Touya is working even more “everywhere” than ever, he’s in movies now. o.O
And he works to make money to help Sakura out finacially… just how far ahead did in see into the future before he lost his power and what did he saw. Will she fill for bankruptcy in her fourties or something? It sure sounds that serious. xD
Yukito is as sweet as ever. ^__^

And then to Yue. I guess they don’t have a lot of occasion to talk to each other without Sakura around. Yukito has a lot of work, so Yue doesn’t have a lot of free time. Will they call Eriol? Will they become part of the conspiracy behind their mistress’s back? Or will they start a new conspiracy on their own? Will they confront Xiaolang too?

“I also want to point out how the interior of the Daidouji mansion looks like Suu’s cage in CLOVER. Can’t wait to see that animated to confirm my suspicions.”

It’s probably just a conservatory, a single room in the house with view over the garden. Suu has a full greenhouse, the ceiling is much higher.
On chapter 10, we see Tomoyo’s consevatory has only a wall of windows, then the glass ceiling close over it. In Suu’s green house, on tankoubon 3, there’s a wall of windows, then another wall on top of the first one (then even a third one on some frame), then a dome which close the room two or three times as high as the wall up to there. The architectural style is about the same, first quarter of the 20th century, but Suu’s cage is more detailed and bigger.

The season needs to change ASAP XD

She would be totally under Stockholm syndrome. xD
      haha, yes!

Different house than in book 5, probably his main house. I don’t think we have seen it yet.
Ohhh nice catch! I didn’t notice that but it makes sense considering that was a summer house.

Now that I think about it, in both the Clow Card series and the Clear Card series, Masaki appear on tankoubon 5. Coincidence?
I think not. It just goes to show that Ohkawa is using the exact same structure as the original series.

just how far ahead did in see into the future before he lost his power and what did he saw.
Hummm yeah, I wonder. To me it just felt like an older brother thing but it could be serious. I wonder if Sakura will come to a point where she is in urgent help for money… that doesn’t sound like the usual plot for CLAMP but who knows? haha

The architectural style is about the same, first quarter of the 20th century, but Suu’s cage is more detailed and bigger.
Yes, yes, I don’t suppose it’s the same but they sure have similar elements =)

  5. Gonna leave it here if you need it!

    Good match:
    The Windy > Gale
    The Watery > Aqua
    The Mirror > Reflect
    The Fly > Flight
    The Sleep > Snooze
    The Maze > Labyrinth
    The Firey > Blaze

    Dubious match:
The Loop > Spiral (both create endless loops)
The Move > Action (both move objects)
The Create > Appear (both create objects)

    Without a match:
    Siege
    Record
    Lucid

  6. im interested in seeing syaoran meeting Masaki. both of them took an instant distrust and dislike for the two halves of clow reed. Masaki with fujitaka, syaoran with eriol. and now both Masaki and syaoran have come to like and understand fujitaka and eriol.
also both Masaki and syaoran are verrry protective. Masaki with nadeshiko (and now sakura) and syaoran with sakura. especially since sakura and nadeshiko are involved with a form of clow reed
