BREAKING: CLAMP to draw “HiGH&LOW” manga adaptation

c1drraxxeaapqmz-jpg-largeIt’s been announced that CLAMP will draw a manga adaptation for EXILE TRIBE’s franchise HiGH&LOW.

HiGH&LOW is a comprehensive entertainment project that encompasses various forms of content media. Produced by EXILE HIRO, the project started in 2014 and since then the franchise originated a 2-seasons TV Drama, three movies, live concerts and a manga adaptation. Two more movies are planned for 2017.

The long cast is majorly composed by members of Japanese band EXILE TRIBE as well as other well-known actors and actresses.

According to Oricon, HiGH&LOW was the 15th top-selling franchise in Japan on 2016.

The first manga adaptation was drawn by Masami Hosokawa and it ran in Bessatsu Shonen Champion (Akita Shoten) from November 2015 until October 2016, with a total of 3 volumes released.

Story

The legend begins at a certain town that used to be under the rule of a legendary organization called Mugen. And within the ranks of that domineering organization were two legendary brothers – the Amamiya Brothers, who were proved to be both brutal and unbeaten during that time.

Yet somehow the Mugen was suddenly dispersed during a fierce battle… And in the aftermath of the chaos are five organizations that aim to take control of that area. As a result, this area came to be known as SWORD, an acronym attribute to the names of the five organizations. And in that area dwells a gang that goes by the name “G-SWORD”. These 5 organizations include: Sanno Association and its second-generation Sanno Shouten brawlers, the alluring white demons known as the White Rascals, the dark and brutal Onija High School, the ghosts on the ruthless street aka the RUDE BOYS and the family of vengeful destroyers of Daruma Hooligans”.

These 5 gangs will put their pride on the line as they engage in a fierce battle for dominance! However, the plot thickens… a mysterious group called MIGHTY WARRIORS appears. And the question that everyone is asking now is, are they enemies or allies? What fate awaits this town… (Arama! Japan)

CLAMP have been enthusiastically tweeting their appreciation for the franchise since the beginning of it, often making doodles and sharing them on their twitter account, and in September/2016, Nanase Ohkawa wrote a review for the first movie that was published in Asahi newspaper.

I think it’s safe to assume that Mokona will be in charge of the drawings, judging by the doodles they posted on twitter. These doodles might give us an idea of what to expect from the aesthetics of this project.

I’m looking forward to this!

More info as they come. Stay tuned!

Special thanks to Marco06 for kindly letting me know about this piece of info. Merci beaucoup !

  1. All this time, I thought that CLAMP must really be some HUGE fans of HiGH&LOW for them to continually share so many posts about them on their twitter account and even, as you said, making countless doodles… But I wasn’t surprised beyond that, since they also like Basara…
Well, they *are* fans, but there were clearly more to it, something I absolutely didn’t expect at all!!

I believe this will be the very first time they will be releasing a manga which is not their original work, their first adaptation!

Well, this is right down their alley! CLAMP’s ‘dark and mischievous’ characters (don’t know how to describe them any better) are ridiculously popular after all hahaha~
Also, most of them are adults, while we are used to have series with younger protagonists. This will be interesting ^^

CLAMP are getting real busy from the get go, starting from the very beginning of the year, I suppose we can stop hoping to see them getting any of their old series out of their hiatus, and simply enjoy what we are being offered!
Which are 14 pages of xxxholic chapters here and there, CCS monthly chapters (yay!), character design for Kabukibu! which premiers in April, Ohkawa’s work on CCS 2016 anime for 2018, and now, this new manga adaptation.

The year hardly started and there is already so much to look forward to!! 😀

BTW, you can now find me on both instagram and tumbler, though of course, these are accounts I’ve just barely created, and they don’t have the 10 years history of my livejournal…

    • And twitter too ^^
Just created that a few minutes ago~
But then again, none of these are blogs in which you can comfortably write long text and post whatever I want, so LJ will still be my home base.

Also, I went through the doodles again, and it seems I was wrong: they are not quite as old as I expected, there are actually tons of younger high school characters in there!

      • They do look a little older than that, tho!

I was telling Sakura84-chan that I hope this style will somehow influence CCS and make them look a little older ^^”

(I am following you on twitter as well!)

    • Do you know when a fan gets the attention of their idol so much that they are hired to work with/for them? This is exactly what happened here xD Now, if only CLAMP would notice me T-T

This is actually the second time. They made a manga adaptation for the REX movie in 1994 😉

Yes, and don’t forget the new Code Geass 😉

It’s so nice to have you on instagram and tumblr! I’m already following you on those =) as for tumblr, make sure to follow my personal tumblr (http://pourmesomehottea.tumblr.com/). The Mokona one is the main one since I created it first, but it’s a thematic tumblr, so… it doesn’t really represent *me*

It’s just like what happened with BLOOD-C! CLAMP posted BLOOD fanart for a few years before that project got announced, so it was probably a fan’s dream come true for them.

  2. This is quite refreshing news. I’m exited for this project even-though story is not my tea but I’m glade that it is something rather than holic tsuba ccs. I honestly took a long break from clamp after holic’s 2 vol and ccs is unsatisfying (not mentioning tsubasa, which sequels makes sense for me, pure commercial game). It’s kind of other level since CLAMP are more mystery/fantasy orientated authors and now they gonna make different type of manga. And I’m so happy that Mokona doing it, I really miss her “new age” graphic style that was bless us in gate7 and extra illustrations and designs. Let’s see how it works out.

    • I am not very much into gangster stories myself but maybe with CLAMP’s art I can be interested in it.

I’m always happy when fans that were out of the fandom step in again. I hope this manga will live up to your expectations. And I agree that this goes to show how versatile CLAMP can be doing a magical shoujo and a gangster series at the same time.

  3. This series is so radically different from what CLAMP normally does (and it looks like there are very few women and girls in the story, too, so it’s a big departure from CCS and HOLiC). I’m interested in seeing how Ohkawa works with a story that isn’t hers.

Also — I hope you had a wonderful New Year’s celebration, Chibiyuuto!
