Another color spread! Two color spreads in a row. CLAMP are on fire with this. We get to see Akiho’s hair color (so fast) and it is true what my friend Sakura84 told me: they look like 6 years old.

Love Tomoyo here for being the perfect partner in crime as she always was. Everyone was missing some Sakura/Tomoyo interaction and CLAMP gave us that in this chapter.

The costume Tomoyo made this time reminded me of GATE 7 for obvious reasons.

Let’s point out that once again nobody was around when Sakura was securing the card — and she points that out again, which make things more suspicious.

Kudos to Sakura to figuring out all by herself again on how to secure this card, although I didn’t really understand what was happening when she used SIEGE.

So, ACTION… I can’t think of a Clow Card counterpart. Maybe The Move, but that was an anime-only card. I can’t think of a manga Clow Card counterpart.

Also worth mentioning how Yue can’t feel any powers coming out of the clear cards, which could mean that not feeling any power coming out of something doesn’t necessarily mean that that something is powerless. It could also mean that that something has foreign powers.

Love the card’s design with the gears. Very X-y, very CLAMP-y =)

Closing this chapter is the much anticipated scene where Sakura offers to make obentou for Syaoran. This is something that fans were speculating for a long time and it’s finally here. Just when we think there isn’t enough Sakura/Syaoran interaction, Ohkawa gives us something to calm us all down xD

Still can’t believe how Eriol is managing to keep that timezone bullshit xD

In the last scene, we see now five glowing spheres floating on top of Syaoran’s board — one for each card.

I am sorry I am not able to make a bigger review this time, I am really short on time right now.

37 pages for the chapter. 141 pages for volume 2 so far — I give two more chapters to close this volume.

  1. I am surprised to see another spread, but then again: CLAMP cheated a bit on this one since half of it is blue BG haha~
I also didn’t expect to see Akiho so soon on a color page ^^
Next issue is for February = VALENTINE DAY! I am very strongly wishing for a Valentine themed illustration featuring Sakura and Syaoran together, of course! ❤ The chapter itself wont be about it though, obviously, since we are in April in the manga timeline.

As for the chapter itself, this is the first time ever Sakura actually had to go out running from her classroom in order to catch a card: in the first 2 seasons, the cards' captures always happened at more 'convenient' times of the day ^^; But more than something new or wanting to change things compared to the previous arcs, I believe this is just CLAMP insisting on the fact these cards has been appearing whenever/however and at highly fast pace + are not quite cooperative (Sakura had to move back the tree to where they were by herself) and I am waiting for an explanation for that!
These cards are quite lifeless, they have a 'function' but that's it, compared to the Clow Cards who mostly have personalities and even showed to have thoughts of their own sometimes.

Now, SxS moment: SO SWEET of course! ❤ That bento and phone things are very typical behavior for a couple uh? And again, we shall witness this great moment of Syaoran trying out Sakura's cooking for the first time (I'm not counting the milk and honey cup she made…) in the February issue (va-len-tine! va-len-tine! va-len-tine! XD)

Still, Syaoran looking all bothered and worried is starting to feel old, at least, this is the feeling I get as a monthly reader: I totally understand that if I had the full book in hand and didn't wait 30 days between each chap., I would definitely not feel that way since we are hardly at the beginning of the 2d volume ^^; So yeah, nothing weird here when we look at the series as full books, CLAMP are going at a correct pace, neither fast nor slow.

    • I just re-read my post, about “ These cards are quite lifeless, they have a ‘function’ but that’s it“, and it made me think that this feeling is made even stronger by the fact they seem like mechanical parts of a machine, and the shards of ice or glass surrounding them really gives off a cold feel to them on top of everything…

      • Adding Yue’s observation to the above, I get the sense that the cards don’t have power or personalities in and of themselves, but are rather functions for the Dream Staff. If this is the case, then Sakura isn’t really capturing cards — she’s just unlocking new abilities for the staff, which she can activate using the cards as keys, so to speak.

        Like

        • This is an interesting theory, and it indeed add up quite well with Yue’s thoughts.
All in all. it all comes down to the Dream Key which Sakura is using right now, and which the Shadow Figure tried to take back in their last encounter…

I think the biggest mystery is still the involvement of Eriol and Syaoran in all this (and I assume that Nakuru/Spinel/Mizuki are all in the know too): do they know what is this key? who is its owner? why so much gloom, guilt and secrecy about it: I got Eriol’s point when he said that if Sakura knew there was no actual danger then she wouldn’t have tried half as hard to change the Clow Cards into Sakura Cards and surpass him, but what is the issue now…? what is it she can’t absolutely not be told about concerning this key and the shadow figure?

So true xD I guess it took them half the amount of time it usually takes to draw a spread.

Well reminded! We pretty much got color pages from every important character already, except maybe for Touya and Yukito, so we might see another Sakura/Syaoran illustration.

These cards are quite lifeless, they have a ‘function’ but that’s it, compared to the Clow Cards who mostly have personalities and even showed to have thoughts of their own sometimes.
Hummm at first it seems that way. I wonder if it’s not too soon to conclude that, tho.

      I would definitely not feel that way since we are hardly at the beginning of the 2d volume ^^;
I realized too late that I’ve been counting the page numbers wrong. It’s all because I didn’t know how many chapters there would be in volume 1. I thought it would be 5 and it ended up being only 4 and that messed up my counts. This Chapter 8 could very well be the last chapter of volume 2. If you count all pages from Chapters 5~8, it makes 142 pages, which is just like the amount of pages from Chapters 1~4 (141 pages).

        *mouth open wide*
        Seriously!??
Volume 1 was hardly released 1 month ago (I don’t even own it yet!! I had too many expenses and things to pay for this end of the year!) and the 2d volume is finished?!?
141 pages is a very low number of pages though…? Maybe they are considering releasing ‘normal’ 170-180pages (meaning 5 chapters) books now, like the first edition?
And if chapter 8 is the last chapter of volume 2, are we getting another double page illustration next month as the first chapter of volume 3?

NOW, it really feels like there are not enough events happening, with 2 volumes down and the 3rd one beginning… I do not think this will end with 6 volumes if the story goes on at this pace!

        Like

        • Seriously.

Personally I think they will keep the same lenght for all upcoming books. There are always a few blank pages between chapters, plus the ads. So we might end up with another 160 pages book. But I could be wrong also and we might still have one chapter left. This time we might not have the few story/character digest pages in the beginning after all.

That pace of releasing a volume while in the magazine there is another batch of chapters worth compiling into another book reminds me of Tsubasa. When volume 1 came out they were publishing the first chapter of volume 3.

And if chapter 8 is the last chapter of volume 2, are we getting another double page illustration next month as the first chapter of volume 3?
Third spread in a row? Who knows. Maybe you’ll have your Valentine’s spread =)

It does look like it will span more than 6 volumes. They need the manga to be running while the anime is being aired so we’ll have manga until mid-2018 at the very least.

THAT EVIL LAUGH! I must admit I kinda missed it, hohohohoh.

My thoughts lead me to think that Syaoran is behind this…like, he’s casting some magic to keep people out, just like Eriol did in Sakura Card.

Kudos to Sakura to figuring out all by herself again on how to secure this card, although I didn’t really understand what was happening when she used SIEGE.
ME TOO! I didn’t get that the problem were the trees trying to destroy Siege, Mokona has to work on this because it’s not the first time that a scene comes out rather confusing. I liked that Sakura had to work a little bit more to secure the card, tho. Other times it was “Oh there you are! SECURE!”.

Also worth mentioning how Yue can’t feel any powers coming out of the clear cards, which could mean that not feeling any power coming out of something doesn’t necessarily mean that that something is powerless. It could also mean that that something has foreign powers.
THIS is very important. We should keep it in mind. “Foreign” as in, “not from this world”, probably.

I’m serious, I think she reads us. Because we were whining so much “Please at least get them prepare the lunch for eachother!!” because that’s something most couple do, and then BAAAM served on a plate. Now, it’s not a given we WILL actually see this happening, but still….hahaha
I must add that Syaoran creeped me out, in the last pages. The choice to not show Syaoran on the other side of the phone, but only balloons or the phone itself, was kinda eerie. And the way he hesitated before answering if she could call him even without incidents happening…I dunno, CLAMP is really playing on this.

Still can’t believe how Eriol is managing to keep that timezone bullshit xD
I REALLY HOPE Sakura is not still believing that the reason why he’s not replying is the timezone! SERIOUSLY NO SAKURA.
BTW if I was her, I would be sending a text everyday, “ARE YOU DEAD FOR GOOD THIS TIME?”.

In the last scene, we see now five glowing spheres floating on top of Syaoran’s board — one for each card.
I think now it should be clear for everyone that the glowing orbs correspond each to a new card that Sakura secured away.

Not very much happened this month, but I’m looking forward to the next chapter!! (Which will come out in soooo long time u_u)

aaaawwww…don’t say thaaat! ;___; *crriiiiiess* We are already holding on a string for the SxS relationship so far: with the exception of their reunion at the beginning, the only few times we saw some sparkles between them felt really one sided on Sakura’s side because of how gloomy Syaoran was each time, even though we are all aware of how much in love he is with Sakura, but seeing him so blue for so long is really unsettling and upsetting TT_____TT

I hope we will get over whatever it is that is making him this way, and that we will see happier and cloudless smiles from him soon!

This is a bit contradictory actually: his board is something created by Clow Reed and passed on as a heirloom in the Li family, and said Rashinban (which was created using oriental/Chinese magic) which was made to detect Clow Cards (and was totally useless during the Sakura Cards Arc), is now able to tell the presence of some strange cards which has either ‘no magic’ or a ‘foreign magic’…?

the magic is chinese magic origin perhaps?

        • the magic is chinese magic origin perhaps?

The emphasis on the Chinese symbols on Sakura’s new magic circle would suggest that, but since Yue is born out of Chinese magic himself (versus Kero, who’s born out of Western magic), wouldn’t he be able to sense power from the cards?

          Like

          • I guess the orbs were chosen for their unclear shape. It’s as if the board senses “something” (or in this case, somethingS) but it can’t really put a shape into it.

But I don’t think it is sensing the cards themselves, more like the cards ONCE THEY ARE SECURED. There are more cards out there and the board can’t sense them.

Well spotted! Very good point indeed!

Still: Yue judged he didn’t feel any magic from the sealed cards, so it is still quite unclear what it is the board detects. I hope CLAMP will tell us more about Syaoran’s magic, I believe we don’t know enough about it.

      • I know my dear, there’s little sparkles between them and Syaoran is soo gloomy it makes you want to shake him like Meiling would do in the old times hahaha…But we have to be patient and let CLAMP guide us into this story, even if he ends up being creepy it will clear up eventually…

This is a bit contradictory actually: his board is something created by Clow Reed and passed on as a heirloom in the Li family, and said Rashinban (which was created using oriental/Chinese magic) which was made to detect Clow Cards
I KNOW! In fact, I believe this means something: if the rashinban is reacting, it means Clow’s magic is somehow active, for some reason.

    • My guess is that Clamp decided no to show him talking on the phone, to not expose even more his saddened expression?

And his hesitation could be, because Sakura is such a great person: she never asked why he is not there for her when she is in a
dangerous situation and more she keeps being optimistic and saying cute things to him, he feels frustrated and powerless to not be able to help her the way he wants.

I hope in the next chapter, someone(Tomoyo) teases Syaoran because of the obentou he received , then he can show his cute side again.

Exactly. Can we really say the cards don’t have power? Sakura is doing magic with them, so………….

loool, ok so i might be the only one thinking that they were drawn to look a teeny bit older this chapter… maybe the facial expressions and action? there was less fluffy cuteness. but the face shapes seemed a little less like 8/9 year olds, and more like 11 year old to me this time?
anyhoo, YUE!!! omg i was only commenting last chapter that i was pining to see him and here he is! i am sooo happy. i think if yue gets more involved we will get closer to the answers. straight up he was like yeah its that key. and oh my the cuteness of yukito wanting to meet him face to face!! awww!! i wonder if sakura would ever do that for him, like i dont know…? separate them somehow? (thats me running away with a single speech bubble again. its probably stupid)
soo those floating lights are representing the cards in syaorans board thing- cant remember the name…

I won’t say it’s impossible (this is a CLAMP work after all), but I personally believe this is very unlikely to be the case ^^; Other than their facial expressions being inevitably similar because they are the same character, and also a direct consequence of CCS|Syaoran’s actual sad mindset (which obviously remind us of TRC|Syaoran who often looks worried…), I sincerely don’t see why they think Syaoran might be the clone from TRC.
      I personally exclude this possibility.

  5. Now we know for sure that Akiho is some kind of important character, but…to be honest, this color spread along with her clueless reactions in this chapter make me more convinced that she’s not an antagonist. If not, then her façade game would put Seishirou to shame.

Let’s point out that once again nobody was around when Sakura was securing the card — and she points that out again, which make things more suspicious.

Note how Tomoyo hasn’t been able to record Sakura in the act of actually securing a Clear Card, either. Would something strange pop up on the camcorder if she did?

Kudos to Sakura to figuring out all by herself again on how to secure this card, although I didn’t really understand what was happening when she used SIEGE.

My impression was that the moving trees were beginning to violently throw themselves against the walls of the barrier, which meant that they would eventually destroy themselves if Sakura didn’t make the walls more flexible. You’re right that the action scenes aren’t as clear as they used to be in the original CCS, though — I have no idea what she was doing with AQUA in this chapter.

I hope you’re enjoying your holidays, Chibiyuuto!

  7. Akiho in color! Blond and blue eyed, which reinforce her foreigner background. And contrast with her Japanese name…
The ice crystal reminds me of another blond and blue eyed character, Faye…
Also, when Sakura catch the cards, it looks like they are made of ice chunk…
Akiho’s name rhythm with Kaho, even though it’s not the same kanji. There could be a link or not…

Akiho didn’t got a lot of screen time this chapter, only two little frame with Chiharu. On the back burner until another chapter, I guess.

Which leaves more time for card action, with Tomoyo, Yue and Xiaolang! ^__^

Tomoyo has everything planned, as expected. Although she couldn’t record anything within “Siege”. She needs to put auxiliary cameras in Sakura’s outfit. And probably Kero as well, so they can catch each other. The new lotus outfit is lovely. ^__^

Chibiyuuto: “Still can’t believe how Eriol is managing to keep that timezone bullshit xD”

I would think Sakura understand if he doesn’t answer, he must have good reason not to. Especially since she herself is hiding the truth from Yukito.

Chibiyuuto: “In the last scene, we see now five glowing spheres floating on top of Syaoran’s board — one for each card.”

Seems like it, Gale, Siege, Aqua, Reflect and Action. They kind of work like Clow Cards, but aren’t too close either… Maybe someone related to Clow, but not necessarily by blood. Feiwang Read had the same magic circle than him if I remember well, or was it just Xinghuo? Cards sound really European at least… Let’s wait and see.

Finally some Xiaolang and Sakura love! As for his pausing before answering, I would guess, after eight months of nothing, he was completely taken aback and couldn’t believe she finally started to make any kind of move. X D

    • Yes I thought the same ^^ , Akiho’s colors reinforcing her foreign background. Although her name and surname are totally japanese which makes me think she’s japanese as well but grew up elsewhere. Well we know Clow was english/chinese/japanese.

If Akiho is gonna play a role into all this new clear card stuff it’s like Sakura’s magic is gonna grow in a sort of “worldwide” range. As much as with Eriol, previously, her magic grew in a perspective outside Japan and China cultures, touching England. Dunno just a feeling.
Anyway Akiho was created specifically to resemble Sakura a lot, on one side, to replace Rika (who also had light hair) on the other side.

I was thinking something similar to what you just said, a parallel with Fai in some ways, I’ve a feeling Clamp already having on Sakura’ side a black haired (Tomoyo), now they are placing a blond haired (Akiho) into CCS (shoujo) as much as Syaroan already has in TRC (shounen). I’ve always thought about Yue and Kero of CCS like the parallel of Fai and Kurogane in TRC, as powerful characters helping the main one during the story, but they lacked the fact of being “human” let’s say.
Clamp always work filling everything with opposites and poles, playing with complementars colors and symbols, intertwining them.
So my guess (and it’s just a guess) about this new Clamp job is: Rika out, empty place, filled with a new one fitting the new cute story arc, mysterious of course, lighter/colder colors too, balancing Sakura and Tomoyo palette (for illustration and complentary compositions), possibly bringing the new “clearing out” meaning (here I see a link with Chikahito in Gate 7 of which no one is able to sense powers), placing a 2nd “eye” near to Sakura (the 1st one being Tomoyo), ’cause Clamp work with yin/yang poles around the main character… etc….
Let’s add that Clamp know very well what their fans like, and this kind of characters – light hair and eyes, cute/beautiful, with a dark side (see Chii/Freya, Fai, Hinoto, Iemitsu…) – provide a big fanservice.

[Anyway if Clamp ever, ever, in future, are gonna place this Akiho as a sort of future wife for Fai… I am gonna burn their office. >: ]
      [… just kidding. maybe.]

Aww now that you mention it, the european feeling… what if this new mysterious figure is a descendant of the english siblings part of Clow? 😀 (that would be a total mess lol, but maybe would explain even Akiho presence and messing around is so clampish XD )

Although we haven’t seen too much of Akiho, I wonder what kind of personality she will have behind the “nice new kind in the group” which we have seen so far. I feel the same kind of vibe from her than Tomoyo, she sound like she’s from a well off family. Just the many country trip she made feel like she isn’t form the average middle class background, like Sakura, Chiharu, Yamazaki and Naoko.

She seems more in the league of the Lees and Eriol, old magic families with plenty of money. It’s almost as if she hide her real name, Akiho Malfoy. X D

          • If I’m remembering correctly, Syaoran was able to overpower Feiwang in the final battle by covering up Clow’s magic circle with CCS|Sakura’s, too.

I have Xiaolang and Sakura using CCS|Sakura, Yuuko, Clow and CCS|Xiaolang magic circle, but I don’t have Feiwang using any. I’ll try to find the ending somewhere online.

      • I’m rereading Tsubasa Reservoire Chronicle right now, Xinghuo make a Clow circle on chapter 115, close to the end of takoubon 15.
