Everyone is getting a color page and now it’s Tomoyo’s turn. I like the floating window concept. That’s also because Tomoyo plays an important role in this chapter.

After 3 basically plot-based chapters, we now have a very light chapter, very Card Captor Sakura-like with Tomoyo, Sakura and Kero baking a cheesecake.

I didn’t expect to see Eriol’s side so soon. He says it’s still not the right time to contact Sakura… we just hope that he doesn’t do that only after she secures all of the new cards xD So sweet of Nakuru of wanting to go and help Sakura. That’s a side of her we’re not used to see! CLAMP cannot keep this gang from doing nothing and just watch (or can they?) so I wonder what their role is gonna be.

So a new card appears, this time is Sakura’s own bedroom — Siege. Like Gale, I actually had to look up the meaning of that word. Surely there’s a reason for using such uncommon words for this new card?

Again Sakura felt no aura coming from the card, but she did sense something just before the card showed itself. The card reminded immediately of the kekkais in X.

A couple of readers suggested that this card would be the counterpart of The Maze or The Shield. That is, if these cards are really counterparts of the Clow/Sakura cards. I love this card’s design.

Notice how again, when Sakura secures the card, the card’s form appears within a shard of glass — at least I think it’s glass — just like Sakura’s dream in Chapter 1. I wonder what’s the meaning behind this.

I have to say, I thought this chapter was drawn beautifully! I wasn’t too keen on Chapter 3 but Chapter 4 made up for it. It looks very CCS, I hope it stays that way.

Another set of 35 pages this time (there is one page missing from the Chinese scans). 142 pages so far for volume 1. Next chapter will be next month and it shall be the last chapter from volume 1 (out on Dec. 2). No breaks so far!

  2. My guess is that CLAMP is choosing stranger names for the new cards to a) indicate maturity (since both Sakura and the original readers of the series are older) and b) impart a sense of strength and violence. The kanji on “Seige” have a variety of translations that don’t sound nearly as harsh, such as “encircle,” “surround,” or even “box” (as in “box in”). Like Gale, this card attacked Sakura in a vulnerable position out of the blue, too — this time right in her own house. The Sword was the only card to do that in the comic.

I agree that the art looked much more CCS-esque this chapter! I wonder if CLAMP’s editors are picking up on the same problems we do, haha.

Finally, I really hope Eriol isn’t pulling a Yuuko here — that is, putting off explaining important information just because the plot hasn’t called for it yet. That was very obvious and very annoying back in “xxxHOLiC,” and it’s possibly the worst story trope Ohkawa could have kept from that series.

    • While “Gale” looked more violent, I thought “Siege” was pretty harmless.

Whatever it is, I hope they keep doing it!

I think that’s exactly what he is doing =P

That’s what’s weird about it. “Seige” definitely doesn’t look violent, which makes the name sound strange. As a native speaker, when I hear the word “seige,” I don’t think about rubber boxes — I imagine giant catapults and encampments about to destroy a castle.

When you compare the card to The Maze or The Shield, as some readers are doing, the negative aspect of the card becomes a little more clear. Like “Seige,” The Maze could have been used to trap people, but it had a humorous element in that anyone could escape if they just navigated it properly. (Or cheated, like Kaho did.) The Shield was instinctively drawn to precious objects, and we only ever saw it used to defend people close to Sakura. The word “Seige” doesn’t imply protection, but rather a sustained attack over a long period of time.

I think that’s exactly what he is doing =P

Nanase Ohkawa likes subverting tropes, right? Why doesn’t she subvert this one for once?!

We think alike it seems ^__^
This is exactly what I thought about the very second I saw the word: a surrounded castle being attacked from all sides, Knights brandishing their swords around and encampments with the generals making plans etc.. hahaha~

  3. Thanks for sharing, like usual 😀

Nice chapter, big 90’s CCS vibes here, I feel like we went back in time, and as you said, the artwork was indeed quite charming ❤
My only problem is that unless they are wearing their new school uniforms, I don't get the feeling that the characters have grown at all, which is no good…

About the story itself, yet another card was captured, and painfully easily! ^^; But then again, beside the major cards (light, dark, last judgement etc…), there were never any crazy battles that lasted several chapters in the 2 first arcs, so we are pretty much following in the tradition of the CCS series spirit 😀
Unlike you I knew both words already, but they are indeed more sophisticated then the simple 'watery', 'firey', 'windy' etc… that we got in the first arc.

And now, very important: I need to see Syaoran next month! XD These are monthly chapters dammit, so if a character is a no show, we have to wait weeks for him/her TT__TT I would also like to see his new battle costume (it must be new, it has to be new, it can't be that green tunic again!) and hopefully, even new magic?

If it makes you feel any better, my favorite character hasn’t appeared in a color illustration since 2007.

      • Should I make a guess and say your favorite character is Clow Reed? ^_^

But he did appear in color in Tsubasa and xxxholic, even though we are only talking about a couple of pics…

        Like

          • I guessed it was Clow Reed because of how little color pictures we have of him, then on 2d though it was also because of the date: 2007, it’s a time in which there was close to no illustrations of CCS unless it was a CrossOver… nonetheless, in 2007 both TRC and Holic were running, and there is a couple of artworks with Clow ^^

But indeed, Kaho sensei really didn’t have much luck, as well as Eriol…I hope to see those two together in one of the chapters’ splash pages, definitely!

            • Cutesherry wins the prize! It’s Clow. I’m pretty sure the last color illustration of him was a TRC deluxe edition cover released back in 2007. Considering that Clow is the only major character not to have gotten a new color illustration over the past two years (unless you count Sakura’s gang of friends), I wouldn’t be surprised if we got nothing at all for him in the end. There isn’t any foreseeable reason for CLAMP to draw him in the near future, at least — he’s no good for marketing, and if he’s relevant to the Clear Card arc at all, then that will most likely pop up near the end of the series in 2017 or 2018.

Kaho and Eriol will most likely get a splash page together! It might even be in next month’s issue, for all we know.

              • I win! XD

I always thought it was really ironical that the most powerful magician in the world, who started the whole story of CCS, is blood related to the protagonists, and is also a key character in both Tsubasa and xxxholic, has been shrewd in mystery all this time…but then, it’s what makes it appealing too? ^^
I guess the fact we can’t tell how he thinks and feels at all is what is making us wonder infinitely about his intentions and actions… and also allows CLAMP to add whatever they want about him to make a plot advance/change at any given time hahahaha~

And as you said, as for seeing a color artwork of Clow in CCS CC: if CLAMP involves him in the story, why not? ^_^

Exactly. Not knowing much of him is precisely what makes him so interesting.

I know… maybe they are saving it for later in the series? I wish they were longer and more teen shoujo-esque too.

You knew the words? Your vocabulary must be fantastic =)

      • yep… i thought that sakura looked really young with that gorgeous picture for the 1st chapter. they had certainly matured at the end of the original. but although we’re taking off right where it ended, it feels like they are acting and looking like they did during sakura arc when eriol was causing trouble. but im still absolutely in love with all the characters. i wonder if clamp will age them by doing the series over a few years time period. like aging them till they’re 16 or something… but then again they’re all only just 13 right? MAJOR growth spurts kick in around mid 12-18 right… they all still have time. ;D

  4. Siege is to surround a certain place eg a castle meaning it cuts off supplies like food, goods or even help etc. so it weakens the castles defences making it extremely vulnerable to attacks. the castle in this case was sakuras room. and the “queen” being sakura. like all good rulers, she accepts help when needed. ^^ i say queen cause she was drawn as one recently (with the red and green dress) so im thinking this siege is the equivalent to shield since both are battle defences/tactics. these new ones are certainly very dark and violent. its eerie that sakura and kero cant sense anything. although sakura did sense something briefly before both attacks didnt she? and she is drawn to this mystery dream person. and she’s taken to the new staff…. these new cards rather remind me of ruby and spiner. they were much darker and aggressive compared to the lighter yue and kero… like the clear cards compared to the clow/sakura cards. as for eriol, i think he’s definitely pulling a dumbledoor/yuuko act on sakura. he’s also manipulating other players like syaoran, and ruby we now find out. oh yeah… ruby, although she was somewhat ruthless, she did genuinely adore sakura from the offset. so im not surprised in her wanting to be close to her what with everything thats going on. but what i wana know is why isnt she up to going to japan at the moment? is whats going on effecting eriol as much as sakura i wonder and therefore having a knock on effect with spinner and ruby…

  5. Such a beautiful illustration of Tomoyo. ^_^

Nice cooking scene, so Card Captor Sakura. ^_^

    Nice outfit. ^_^

The box is so cute. ^_^
Nice to see Tomoyo being so useful. Although she will probably have singing episode.

So two cards in now. The siege, I didn’t had to look it up because the word comes from French, siège, but it is really weird to see such a military word in Card Captor Sakura…

So Sakura is keeping stuff from Yukito, Eriol and Xiaolang are keeping stuff from Sakura, I guess in the end it will turn out ok, but it may be a close case.
