New “Card Captor Sakura” manga series to begin in June

It’s been formally announced in the June issue of Nakayoshi magazine (on sale today) that the new Card Captor Sakura manga will start its July issue (on sale June 3rd).

The promotional image reveals Sakura is now in the seventh grade (first year of junior high school), which means the story will take place after the Sakura Card arc of the original story.

The plot line suggests that the story will take place around a strange dream seen by Sakura and an incident that occurred after that.

The promotional image says it’s gonna be a series and not a one shot, as we originally assumed.

It is worth noting that Sakura is not with her staff in the promotional illustration. Sure this could be nothing but it could also mean that her giving up her staff might be fully addressed in this sequel. It is also worth mentioning that in both illustrations you cannot see the back of the cards (like something is happening to them?). Again, this could be nothing but it could also mean something. Why not draw the Sakura magic circle?

The new series still doesn’t have a singular title to differentiate it from the original one. Up to now it’s still being addressed as “Card Captor Sakura new series”. But will it have a subtitle? I’d say yes and judging by some their past works, I’d say CLAMP must thinking of it right now.

Here’s a black and white advertisement for the next Nakayoshi issue annoucing Card Captor Sakura‘s comeback. The announcement says that the original news got over 30.000 retweets:

  1. This new SERIES (not oneshot!) is definitely coming into shape now ^_^

    Sakura looks clearly older but still, I feel a bit bad for CLAMP: they have to make her older than she was in the CCS series, but also younger than they’ve drawn her for years in TRC, and of course, go back to the shoujo flowery drawing style~
    That said, they’ve been drawing her quite a lot these past few years, and I can see from the scan above that they will nail it. We’ve got tons of complains toward CLAMP, but their art is not one of them 😉

    It looks like the major “problem” here, is that the action might take place before Syaoran came back, which surprises me a bit to be sincere, but I’m not too preoccupied either: we will get to see him for sure, and get SxS too of course when it gets to the last page, it ends, and the authors start a new series, that’s it. I’ve read countless comments of people saying that CLAMP are only recycling their old series or “the 1st series ended perfectly, why bring it back?!”, but I do not share their opinions: I feel genuinely happy about a new CCS manga, I do not believe it will affect the feelings or memories I have of the 1st series in any way (why would it?) and I’m ok with it being a long series! (well….. “long”… I don’t think we will get more than a few volumes even if we beg for it ^^;;)

      –> I am sincerely overjoyed: it took a while (2 decades!) but it is a privilege to have the chance of seeing your favorite characters being brought to life again by their original creators, most series do not have this opportunity : when it gets to the last page, it ends, etc…

    • oh wait, I also wrote something else that was cut off too: how I was so glad once again that I purchased the new 2015 edition of the manga, and how it made so much sens now: the new volumes will very likely be in the same style: they will look so pretty all together~

      • Hummm I wonder that! Do you think it’s gonna follow the 60th Anniversary design instead of the 90’s one? I prefer the 60th Anniversary one, of course, but does that mean that it must have 200+ pages?

    • Awww! Our favorite little magic girl is growing up!! 💗🌸 I too am absolutely thrilled that clamp are doing a new series after the ccs ending. I’ve been wishing for a decade and a half that they would release a one shot showing them all grown up and more powerful. And showing how Sakura comes into her own as the new master after glow reed. I’d love to see them as adults too. I wonder if we’ll se eriol? I’m sure ccs syaoran will show up! Omg I can’t wait! Best news ever on my birthday ☺

      Surprise, surprise! We all know it’s not gonna run for another 12 volumes but still it’s better than a one-shot.

      I feel a bit bad for CLAMP: they have to make her older than she was in the CCS series, but also younger than they’ve drawn her for years in TRC

      I know, right? And they’ve done it so well, she looks just like her age!

      Syaoran seems to be the big question, but he will be there somehow, of course!

  3. It looks like Kobato! I’m not complaining. I think Kobato was a great influence on all of these new CCS illustrations.

    It is worth noting that Sakura is not with her staff in the promotional illustration.     You know, this sounds kind of stupid, but I’m wondering if CLAMP didn’t accidentally toss out or lose their templates for the Sakura and Clow magic circles during their move to Kyoto. While the circles have appeared on all different kinds of merchandise over the past two years, CLAMP hasn’t actually drawn either one since the finale of TRC back in…2009? Out of the new illustrations they’ve produced for CCS, we’ve seen Sakura holding the Clow book, Sakura holding a Sakura card with the front visible, and Sakura holding a generic card with a chess pattern, but never anything with the magic circles.

    Weird.

    The other alternatives are that the cards are undergoing another visual change in relation to Sakura giving up her staff (not really necessary, but the most likely scenario), or Sakura has gotten to work making new cards (which could, for example, make the remaining 33 cards from the TV series canon, but seems out of keeping with her character).

    • The B&W picture does resemble Kobato, in my opinion!

      Oh my, I never noticed what you just said about the cards xD It could be that? But I don’t know, it seems to me that other people apart from CLAMP would have that template. Like Kodansha for all the merchandisings. They just released the new artbook with the magic circles in the back cover.

      I like the idea of Sakura creating her own cards, like Clow did.

        I think that would go over well with most of the fanbase, since there are lot of cool and interesting cards exclusive to the TV series! Some cards could open up possibilities for plot developments, too, like the Return and the Dream, for example. My only hangup with the idea is that (judging by the color illustration above) Sakura would be making a whole bunch within a short period of time, which seems kind of frivolous? We can explain away all of the weird and redundant cards in the TV series by the fact that Clow was an eccentric person who presumably made them over the course of centuries, but the real reason they exist is that the producers of the show needed material for two seasons of card-catching. Here we don’t have either excuse, so all I’m imagining is 14-year-old Sakura making sentient life whenever she runs into a mundane problem. (“The cookies I had to make for Home Ec. class are ruined — I know, I’ll create a card that’ll make them taste sweet!” “I’m running late for class again! If only I had a card that could make me run faster, or move me across the ground, or stop time!”)

        All reservations aside, I’m confident CLAMP is going to do a good job with this series. This is how they’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of CCS, and they poured a lot of love into the original work, which shows in all of the illustrations they’ve produced over the past two years! Also, if all else fails, they have the editors of Nakayoshi breathing down their necks.

  5. Hi there,

    I just want to ask for confirmation about a little something: are both the color illustration and black and white one too, you posted in this post, included in the June issue (on sale on April 30th) of Nakayoshi magazine?

    From the looks of it, these might be promotional pictures that will not be included in chapter 1, so I’m considering buying the magazine to get them.

            I didn’t quite get that part? ^^; But what you mean is that CLAMP might not be doing their job by releasing chapters every month, right? Still, a break after only 1 month is unlikely, and with amazon japan, I am free to cancel my order anytime I want. as long as the product hasn’t been sent yet, or ‘in preparation to be sent’.

            But is it just you guts feelings, or is there a concrete reason that made you think there might not be a new chapter in next month’s issue?
