GATE 7 on indefinite hiatus?

This month both GATE 7 and Drug & Drop are on a break, and while this doesn’t seem strange for Drug & Drop (since the last chapter was published last month), it certainly seems strange for GATE 7.

GATE 7 has been on a break since March and the last chapter that was published was an omake (not an actual chapter).

If you check GATE 7’s information on the “CLAMP camera” app, it says that the series is currently on hiatus:

05072013

But strangely enough, if you check CLOVER or X’s information, it doesn’t say they are on Hiatus. GATE 7 is the only work with that information. Additionally, the introductory text about CLAMP on the app states that XXXHOLiC and Drug & Drop are the only two active series that CLAMP are working on:

05072013-02

To make things even more suspicious, the official twitter account of CLAMP is no longer following Shueisha or JUMP SQ’s twitter accounts. On the other hand, GATE 7 is still listed as on the series being published in JUMP SQ: http://jumpsq.shueisha.co.jp/rensai Just earlier this week, both Ohkawa and Nekoi went to Kyoto on a business trip, which I believed was for taking more pictures and doing some more location hunt for GATE 7, but I am unsure if that was indeed the real purpose of their trip now.

There hasn’t been any official announcements from either CLAMP or Shueisha concerning GATE 7’s status. The last chapter published in March informed that a new chapter would be published two issues later, but it’s been postponed indefinitely since.

A lot of people were worried, specially all the GATE 7 fans out there, so I made this post in order to shine some light on this matter.

I will keep you posted should anything new come up about GATE 7’s situation, but for the time being, it looks like GATE 7 won’t be appearing in JUMP SQ.

  1. It’s been a while since I’ve last seen you post something on your LJ account, I’m glad to see you around here! 😀

    About gate7 hiatus…well, why aren’t I surprised =__= There’s been so many series in hiatus until now, I can’t even get myself to be shocked anymore ^^;
Let’s hope that this break in the releases of Gate 7 will be worth it, and that it means they will take xxxholic and drug&drop more seriously!

    • LJ is still my main home =) It’s just that lately there hasn’t been a lot of “lengthy” news… only tidbits which is much easier and quicker to post on Facebook and tumblr.

a friend of mine posted on twitter “GATE 7 on hiatus… CLAMP being CLAMP”, which is so true… sad but true. They need to do something about it or it’ll be bad for their own reputation.

  2. As much as I enjoy CLAMP’s work, I’ve stopped being interested in anything they do because it goes on crazy long hiatuses and it seems they drop the work after some time. There’s probably drama behind the scenes in both publishing and what not, but I’ve resorted to just waiting for now. They haven’t done much to gain my interest anyhow. I hope that changes for me one day. 🙂
    Thanks for the update!!

    • I have no idea. It sold very well so far: 2 volumes/900 k copies.

Also we can’t say that the story took a shape that the publisher didn’t approve. They have been planning it for 2 years with Shueisha.

Maybe the dynamics didn’t work out, maybe they wanted to have too much creative control over CLAMP like “you have to do that because it sells more”.

      • I was referring to the outside publishers and not the japanese ones. For example, Gate 7 is really the best seller that Dark Horse wanted? I don’t really think so; I don’t recall seeing it on the best sellers list. This manga was supposed to be a cooperative project between japanese and outside publishers big hit, but I’m afraid the story is not for all readers outside Japan. If you don’t know the historic references that the manga talks about, it’s hard to follow plus CLAMP make the story to flow slowly. Perhaps, you are right and publishers wanted to have control over CLAMP which resulted in hiatus.

  3. Well I’m glad I cancelled my subscription then, it was expensive as and no Gate 7.
It was often towards the back of the magazine, I’m hoping it comes back. There have been no annoucnements for a while in the magazine itself (D.Gray-man is also on some hiatus too and that isn’t mentioned either).
A few new manga have popped up in the recent months too. And with one of the big ones from the magazine just finishing this month, looks like they have other works slated to fill the gaps.
They also produce Jump SQ 19 which is a quarterly.
D.Gray-man is in the same boat, so hopefully Jump haven’t given up on Gate 7 yet.
If it comes back, Urashichiken will still work on it 😉

    • I read your tumblr post about your subscription, you did it at the right time…

I feel very sad of course, but I feel it even more for you, I know how much you love it and all the time you spent on bringing the scanlations (thanks for all the hard work!).

      D. Gray-man is also on some mysterious hiatus? hummmmm I wonder if they are planning to launch a new magazine and put some popular series there to get the initial boost?

If it comes back, Urashichiken will still work on it 😉

I’m glad to read that 🙂

  4. *sigh* I wish they would at least go on hyatus only when they’ve enough material to release a volume, not halfway through it.
And somehow it sadden me that Gate 7 is declared on hyatus while X and CLOVER aren’t. It seems to imply they’re finished so let’s not hope for more and forget allt he time we were told that X would be resumed ‘someday’.

Were there problems in how Gate 7 was selling? Because otherwise it doesn’t look like a story with a plot that’s so troublesome it needed to be interrupted… unless someone considered offensive the idea to talk about the reincarnations of historical characters…

    • Well, the talks for GATE 7 between CLAMP and the publisher lasted for at least 2 years, I’m sure they knew what they were dealing with, Ohkawa must have told them all her plans for the story.

It sold fairly well: 2 volumes/900k copies.

As for X and CLOVER, maybe the people in charge of the app forgot to properly address the Hiatus xD We should wait for when CLAMP-NET.COM reopens and check that!

      • Well, theoretically the editors of X should have known as well and yet somehow they still had troubles. Still… compared to X Gate 7 seems decidedly tamer (no child abuse, no decapitation, no disembowelment, no pinning of teenagers with sharp objects, no earthquakes, no stabbing through the chest, not yet eye ripping although Masamune has an eye patch so maybe it had already happened…) so unless things are about to change dramatically (after all TRC too had been tame till they get to Tokyo) and editors had misunderstood what CLAMP meant with whatever they said would happen (ES: CLAMP said someone will get ‘wounded’ the editor though to a stab wound that would heal in 1 or 2 days while CLAMP meant the guy will lose both eyes, arms and legs…) I really don’t see any reason to drop Gate 7.

That is unless some readers had ended up considering offensive how 1 or more of the historical characters were handled and had filed a complain or something.

Well, then surely it wasn’t a problem of not selling enough…

Let’s hope they’ll be at least given the hiatus status… though I wouldn’t complain if CLAMP were to decide to resume them…

    • I never saw anything about it, although a friend of mine claims that it did materialize and some unknown artist drew it. I can’t confirm this to you, though!

  5. After I read the material in this site, I was given gives a tweet in the @ clamp_news and these days (precisely on July 7), the CLAMP posted a picture of a scene that appears in the first chapter and affirms about something secret Gate 7. I’m hopeful!

  6. Gate 7 fucking sucks, the quality of Clamp work is pure garbage and they are not professionals. I’m sick of their nonsense and make new series to stop others.

  7. I’m actually surprised that Gate 7 sold fairly well, considering the story is so poor, and it’s all art no plot. The reviews everywhere seem to be mixed.

Still though, this hiatus nonsense is getting ridiculous. It’s not good for CLAMP and we know it. What I think they should do is work and complete one series at a time, and then move on to the next series instead of working on multiple series at the time.

And again; what they should have done was complete their older works that desperately need to be finished (X!!!!) before moving on to new series. Even Clover needs to be complete, though it is fine with its chapters – but X is the series that really needs an ending to wrap things all up. What a shame.

For Gate 7’s sake, I really hope the hiatus isn’t long, even though I don’t really like the series. It’s just not fair to the series, or to the people who like it.

  8. I’m not reading Gate 7 but I hope it will be resumed!

I hope that this info about Clover and X being not marked as in hiatus means Clamp will work on them soonish! 😉

BTW./OT Kobato will be release in Poland 😉 I’m SO HAPPY!!!!

  9. I don’t care for gate 7, but this hiatus worries me because I am following Drug & Drop and that hiatus went on forever and I’m afraid that it may go on hiatus again. I want to see D&D finished, then I can probably give up on them.
I’ve lost hope in ever seeing a proper ending for Clover or X.
