New XXXHOLiC manga series to begin in February

It was announced today at the CLAMP FESTIVAL 2012 NAGOYA that a new series of the XXXHOLiC manga will begin in February.

The new series will be called XXXHOLiC ◆ Rei (XXXHOLiC ◆ 戻 ) and will be published in Young Magazine. The kanji for 戻 roughly means “return”.

This will coincide with the release of the XXXHOLiC artbook, the TV Drama and also the series’ 10th Anniversary.

All of this makes a lot of sense, if you ask me. There couldn’t be a better time, strategic-wise, to resume the series. I would presume that Kodansha and CLAMP already knew that there would be a live action adaptation and decided to put the series on hiatus in order to wait for it. I’d say that everything was planned from the start.

So CLAMP is back to weekly magazines, and back to 3 works simultaneously. Very nice!

In other news, we now finally have the release dates for GATE 7 #4 and Drug & Drop #1. It will be a simultaneous release on February 4. Drug & Drop #1 will cost 588 yens.

  1. WOW Nice news indeed *__* I just hope we still have our loved charaters and no new ones…I mean Watanuki will be there for sure…but what about Doumeki, Himawari and the rest of them?…I fear that Doumeki will be there but not Shizuka…I think he will be the grandson…we will see …anyway I really can’t wait to see this new serie ^^

  2. I want to bet they will conclude tsubasa as well this time. clamp was innovative, running 2 parallel series at the same time, but the plot was like exploding and uncontrollable by the end. I used to be fanatical about clamp, but now not so much.

  4. Unexpected news!

I thought xxxholic would end in another series, a bit like what happened with Tokyo Babylon concluding in X, but they ended up actually taking it up again, and I won’t complain about it!
We will get more action and hopefully get out of this dead period we’ve been drowning in since 2009-2010 in which Clamp hadn’t been that active manga material wise…
I expect crossovers with their other series like usual; most definitely TRC will be involved, but I don’t see what kind of other conclusion they could come up with, other than what they already did.
The other thing is xxxholic itself, what kind of plot will they come up with? Because *stuff* have to happen, right? And not just random independent adventures. Yuuko is gone, Doumeki and Himawari are long dead, and while there are loose ends but still, the TRC events are past; I can imagine something to do with CCS universe, most particularly Clow Reed, since this character, in spite of being talked about so many times in several worlds, is still shrouded in mystery, I would most definitely like to know more about him.

    • Apparently Ohkawa told at the talk show that Yuuko and Watanuki will meet again 😉 *I wonder how?*

I would like to know more about Clow too! And it would be nice to have *some* of the Tsubasa loose ends fully tied.

      • That would be awesome! I’m more ore less happy with the ending of Tsubasa. Instead of a Tsubasa comeback I prefer a storyline of some chapters on xxxHOLiC that could tell us some more information.

As for Holic, I’d like the story to take place just where the 19th volume ended, with a new air and new characters *___*

  5. I’m not sure how to feel about this…
As many loose ends were left untied in HOLiC’s last ending, and as much as I would still like the series (or even just CLAMP themselves) to explain the mysteries from Tsubasa, picking up the HOLiC yet again feels just a little like flogging a dead horse. I see nowhere original left for HOLiC to go plot-wise. If anything, this just seems like milking the last dregs from a popular series that continued for a little longer than it probably should have in it’s second incarnation. Can HOLiC’s simple premise and limited cast really handle a take 3? I’m not so sure…

    • That’s a good point, and I can understand. I am one of the few who think that “XXXHOLiC Rou” should never have happened to begin with. I wanted XXXHOLiC to be over when it was originally supposed to end.

Clearly CLAMP were sold to XXXHOLiC’s popularity, and I don’t like that.

Also, clearly, the manga is returning now because of the TV Drama (another purely commercial reason).

All I can hope is that XXXHOLiC gets a proper ending this time around.

      • I agree completely. I didn’t like HOLiC Rou at all and I don’t think it took the series in a different enough direction to warrant it’s continuation. It added very little to it’s own mythology, the CLAMPverse or even expand on it’s connection to Tsubasa. In the original HOLiC, Yuuko’s motivations and origins were mysterious, which made HOLiC interesting while she was alive. Watanuki’s motivation was to wait for Yuuko to return for some futile reason and his origins were already explained in Tsubasa, which made HOLiC Rou boring.
I won’t even get started on that shockingly lazy ending. >____<

I would like to wish the series a good ending this time, but really… where else has Watanuki to go? Watanuki admitted in the final chapter that he would definitely never see Yuuko again. The only thing left to continue the plot is to invent a new motive for him, or just continue in episodic style with Watanuki being completely goalless save for granting customers wishes and drinking sake. :/ I suppose with 100 years having passed there's room for new characters, but won't shouldn't the outside world be totally futuristic by now because of that?! (Will we end up in Angelic Layer/Chobits-verse?!)

Oh God, I am totally in this boat with you guys too. I’m relieved to see I’m not the only one feeling apprehensive amongst all the celebrations.

I really could go on and on about how much I hated Rou and feel it ruined the series. How it totally drained Watanuki’s personality, how his choices and actions counteracted every message Yuuko had been making a point of throughout the manga, how it had none of the series previous humour or warmth, and just how pointless it was. It explained nothing, and built on nothing either, in all honesty. And, ugh, ‘lazy’ is the apt word to describe the ending – or what felt like a complete lack of one. I personally feel the series should have died with Yuuko – that should have been the natural ending point. It should have finished with Yuuko’s death and an open ending for Watanuki. So the news of yet more continuation of the series makes me feel worried, especially since, as said, it has an obviously commerical motivation. All I can hope is that it ties up some loose ends and then ends quickly and naturally, rather than being pointlessly drawn out. I’m interested to learn a little more about Yuuko and Clow’s background (and there’s still the whole egg thing too), but that’s it, tbh :/.

      • I get you, Rou barely attempt to show a new connected story and it could probably have ended in its first volume like Tokyo Babylon

  6. Hey!
Well, we all kinda expected this to happen since CLAMP-net’s got xxxHOLiC on its unfinished series’ list…

What caught my attention is the fact that xxxHOLiC will return in Young Magazine.

Could xxxHOLiC Rei start where the “first” xxxHOLiC ended? Is it possible? Does the magazine a series is published in has anything to do with the story?

I think is quite unlikely, I mean it’d be weird if they started from Yuuko’s death.

BUT WAIT! As far as I remember, there’s a gap between Yuuko’s death and xxxHOLiC Rou’s first chapter, isn’t it? (correct me if I’m wrong, it’s been quite a long time since I last read it u_u)…
If “Rei” is set before xxxHOLiC Rou then they would have Doumeki and Himawari, right? (I’m not really interested in Doumeki’s grandson or whatever he is, so having Doumeki would be… nicer?) OK, now I really want to read Rei’s first chapter to find out!

Ohkawa, woman you better surprise me…!

I think that’s very unlikely. I mean, one thing doesn’t have anything to do with the other. CLAMP may want to tell the story from an earlier perspective, but that decision is not related to the magazine in this case. It’s the same publisher (Kodansha) so no problem there.

Exactly, they might want to show what happened in that gap. I have no clue! But apparently Ohkawa said at the talk show that Yuuko and Watanuki will meet again.

  7. I don’t know if I’m going to be happy or what. But ever since the last chapter gave me a bad taste, with a lot of unanswered questions such that egg which Doumeki had, I don’t know if my faith in CLAMP would be restored. But I hope they might tie some loose ends.

Anyway, it seems CLAMP are now working with three mangas again. I hope they won’t get overworked too much since they just went into a sick leave.

  8. Ugh, trying really hard not to get my hopes up (that it’ll actually have a proper ending that is) but xxxholic is still one of my fave CLAMP series so I’m happy to see some more of it, looking forward to watching the drama too.

  9. I’m really happy! Xxxholic is my favourite manga ever and I was extremely disapointed by its ending, I just hope clamp’ll manage not to mess it up this time!
Wonder what they’ll do with grandson!Doumeki… and I’m skeptical about Watanuki meeting Yuuko again. Well, no point in worrying just now I suppose.
    Thanks for you news, chibiyuuto!

  10. xxxHOLIC returns! ^^

Maybe we’ll finally get the answer to the egg that does nothing at all. And maybe the fate of the Tsubasa gang’s endless travelling.

  11. I’d like a sequel, not a filler for the gap between penultimate and last chapter of Holic series. Maybe Doumeki’s grandson can use the egg to change the past and original Domeki, Himawari and Yuuko could reappear…

  12. Return? So it’s a sequel and not a retelling? But from where it will pick up: From Ro (the time with Domeki, Kohane) or from the manga’s ending (the time with Domeki’s great grandson)?

I wanna read this because I’d love to know what happened to everyone.

On the other hand, I’m afraid CLAMP will just disappoint me.

    What to do T_T

Now if Clamp would just finish X, I could die happy XD
