GATE 7 Chapter 3

Scans of GATE 7 Chapter 3 have leaked here. Source: Raw-Bunko.

As usual I have no clue of what’s happening, so this is going to be a very lame short review.

I said this once and I must say it again, I really like the use of real photographs instead of drawings. That doesn’t mean I prefer photographs over drawings, I just like CLAMP trying different approaches. Plus, it looks so realistic!

New character! He looks like Kakei from Gouhou Drug XD Except he is drawn by Mokona lol. He wears gloves hummm.

So this is the last chapter of the first tankoubon. It seems that the one-shot will indeed be included in the tankoubon, in the end: 40 pages (one shot) + 126 pages (Chapter 1~3) = 166 pages.

GATE 7 is having such a slow development so far…

  1. This seems like an incredibly important chapter in terms of Chikahito’s importance and the history of the Ura-Shichiken, but we’ll have to wait for translations before finding out for sure. It does seem that the “dream” plot is being dropped, though…otherwise, they would have mentioned it by now, right?

I myself much prefer CLAMP’s hand-drawn backgrounds; the photographs look a little muddy, and were jarring in some places. Well, there’s not much to complain about — Kobato. still has the cleaner feel that I prefer, and it’s interesting to see the contrast between the two series’ aesthetics.

The new character’s name is Akechi Mitsuhidekou! Try saying that five times fast.

I know! There is nothing mentioned about that yet… but the manga is called “GATE 7”, I wonder if it’s related to dreams…

God! The names in GATE 7 are so haaaard! XD Hidetsugu, Mitsuhidekou… jeez! XD

      • Wasn’t “Gate 7” supposed to have a connection to Buddhist lore? Judging by the many references to Kyōto’s rich history, the “strongest oni” (Dairokuten-Maou, who has a notable place in Japanese Buddhism as a tempter and luster for power), the incorporation of Daoist concepts, and so on, I’m wondering if this series is going to be more about history and spiritualism.

God! The names in GATE 7 are so haaaard! XD Hidetsugu, Mitsuhidekou… jeez! XD

It was actually “Mitsuhide-kou,” so he’s really named “Prince Mitsuhide.” Ironically, both Hidetsugu and Mitsuhide are named after retainers who met very nasty ends in the Sengoku and Momoyama periods.

      • Gate 7 seems to be shaping up to be more of a love-song to Kyōto and Japanese variants of Buddhism and Daoism, but there might be a dream element introduced later. Who knows, maybe Oda Nobunaga was really trying to manipulate the dreams of the people!

  2. Interesting chapter! Unfortunately I didn’t understand everything. The new girl, Mikoto, is an oni and she says Chikahito and Hana are both aligned with nothingness, but their powers are different (opposite even). I’m curious what Chikahito will be able to do.
Hidetsugu explains a lot about oni and his contract with Mikoto. Apparently Kakei-lookalike is after the strongest oni.

      • Apparently not. Only people with special abilities can see oni. A person forms a blood pact with an oni, and after his death that oni is passed down to that person’s closest blood relative, then to this relative’s closest blood relative and so on.

It seems many of Sengoku era generals have formed pacts with oni, Toyotomi Hideyoshi being one of them. Oda Nobunaga had an oni as well, but that oni was the strongest in Japan and haven’t formed the pact fro a very long tome, so after forming a blood pact with Nobunaga, oni was sealed inside his body and Nobunaga fell into eternal slumber.

And Mikoto is the oni who belonged to Toyotomi Hideyoshi during Sengoku era. Hidetsugu was Hideyoshi’s nephew and would have become his heir, but then Hideyori, Hideyoshi’s son, was born. Hidetsugu met a rather sad fate after that (these all are real historical figures, so Wikipedia should have plenty of info on them ^^).

But Hidetsugu of Gate7 isn’t a reincarnation or anything (not sure if he’s not Hideyoshi’s descendant though) and his real name isn’t even “Hidetsugu”. Mikoto called him that, and he rolled with it. She also said that he is the most worthy of being with her in this world/life.

Oh, and that Kakei-looking person at the end of the chapter is “Akechi Mitsuhide”. “Kou” is just an honorific.

Ah… sorry for a lengthy comment, but I hope that clears things a bit =) I’ve translated the chapter in Russian, so I know some info and decided to share.

        • Thank you for this very insightful comment! =) I liked this blood pact thing, it looks interesting =)

So GATE 7 has a lot of Japan mythology as well… hummm.

Good! That makes his name shorter and easier XD

        • Wow, thank you for the great information! I updated the character page for the series community to reflect all of this, if you don’t mind. 😀

          • I don’t mind at all! Glad to be helpful =)

I’d like to add a thing about Mikoto – it seems that she also has a pact with “Toyotomi Hideyori” in this life/world (who, apparently, IS a descendant of Hideyoshi), but deems him unworthy of being with her, preferring Hidetsugu.

And the line “Well, then, shall we dine?” in Mitsuhide’s description isn’t correct – it should be a part of a larger sentence that reads something like “Well then, I shall take your “oni” in order to meet with Nobunaga-kou once more”.

            • I didn’t realize that those speech bubbles were part of the same sentence — no wonder that the second one didn’t make much sense! (The “itadakimashou ka” sounded pretty creepy by itself, too.) Mitsuhide’s desire to meet with Nobunaga/Dairokuten-Maou is interesting, considering that the real Akechi Mitsuhide-kou ending up causing Nobunaga’s death.

              Thanks again!

            • It looks like I’m going to have to add some kind of “lore” page for the myouhou techniques, oni, and Daoist shenanigans. For a four-chapter series, there’s certainly been a lot of terminology introduced thus far.

              Like

      • Not really. Oni are usually like demons or ogres in Japanese folklore, but they seem to be a little different here. They’re bound with something like a blood contract to their master, which is why they can only be inherited by close relatives when their master dies. Mikoto was originally contracted to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Hidetsugu’s ancestors. Well actually Hidetsugu isn’t his real name, Mikoto just calls him that.
Oni differ in their abilities and strength. Mikoto can use kotodama. She can use words to attack but offense isn’t her specialty.
The name of the strongest oni is Dairokutenmaou and he was contracted to Oda Nobunaga.
Also normal people can’t see oni.

My Japanese isn’t that good and this chapter was kind of hard for me to understand, so I’m sorry if there are any mistakes.

      • I haven’t watched the CCS movie (blasphemy I know), but it means that they’re not yin or yang like Tachibana and Sakura are. Nothingness is a sort of initial state without yin or yang. I’m no expert on Chinese philosophy though, so don’t quote me on that. 🙂

      • It’s more like the Daoist concept of wuji, which encompasses concepts of boundlessness, limitlessness, and a lack of being. Obviously both Hana and Chikahito have a lot of potential due to their alignment, but Chikahito’s powers are supposedly opposite of Hana’s.

  3. I’m guessing Gate 7 is gearing up to be a longer series, which is why the plot isn’t really moving anywhere…yet! XD But I also wonder where exactly the story will be going and if the plot will somewhat change from the 1st summary released last year. In general, my entire impression of Gate 7 changed since the 1st image I ever saw of it. (The cover on Amazon JP.) I get a much more sinister and darker (and a bit xxxHOLiC) vibe from it since I saw the color images. As beautiful as they are, I’m still a bit confused on what feelings I should be getting from Gate 7. But I’m also VERY glad that I can watch CLAMP’s progress in this series!! 😀 I can’t wait for when the tankoubon comes out!! Thanks again for always keeping us up-to-date with new info~!! :]

    • I think it’s going to be a long series too. It will take 4~5 months to release a tankoubon, so we’ll have 2.5 tankoubons in a year.

I also got that “dark” feeling from GATE 7… there are a lot of blackness around the pages, they are really dark! I love it =)

  6. Off Topic- Kobato. question

Sorry to be off topic, but I didn’t know where to post this question… ^^
The end of Kobato. with volume 6 was confirmed then?
If it is so, there will be only two chapters left after Drop.25 (June’s chapter), right?

    • Re: Off Topic- Kobato. question

It’s not “confirmed” yet… it’s all speculation based on foreign publishers saying that it will end on volume 6. We should all wait and see what happens =)

  7. Didn’t CLAMP use real photographs late in X (/1999)? I remember some panels looking like them. Hopefully it means a certain series may return. 😉

  8. A rather heavy chapter with a lot of sibylic explaination, I wish they’ll give us a chart with who’s who when they’ll be done introducing everyone ^^;

It seems we now have the main plot of the series, “to find the ultimate oni, Mara”, but we still need to learn who/what is Chikahito.

Like you said, this series is rather slow to start, compare to say xxxHolic or Tsubasa which plotline was establish in a chapter or two. This one feels more like the old Clamp, X or Rg Veda.
