XXXHOLiC to be moved to Bessatsu Shonen Magazine

The latest issue of Young Magazine announced that the serialization of XXXHOLiC will be moved to Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine.

Bessatsu Shonen Magazine is a monthly publication that started in September, 2009. The first chapter of XXXHOLiC in its new home will be published in the July issue, which is out on June 9. The chapter will have color pages (beginning of tankoubon 18) and XXXHOLiC will feature the magazine’s front cover (first time that ever happens with XXXHOLiC since the covers of Young Magazine always feature a female model xD).

This means, of course, that XXXHOLiC chapters will be now published monthly.

I remember reading that the only reason CLAMP went for weekly publication with Tsubasa and XXXHOLiC was due to the links between the two series, so now that Tsubasa is over and XXXHOLiC is walking on its own, I can understand why they decided to go monthly (but I must admit I didn’t expect that!). It could also be an attempt to help boost the sales of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. Looking at the other series that are serialized in the magazine, XXXHOLiC is by far the most popular one.

Now CLAMP is back to the monthly publications. Personally I like that, I’ve missed it =) I think monthly publications are juicer.

And one small news, CLAMP-NET.COM updated with news that Mokona’s recommendations will be published in the 4 novels Rean no Tsubasa (The Wings of Rean). The original conpcet of Rean no Tsubasa was made by the creator of Gundam, Yoshiyuki Tomino. The books will be out on March 24.

  1. After the first shock on this news passed by and I started thinking, it might indeed not be *that* bad since it means we will get more pages.
    The monthly chapters should be around 35-40 pages more or less I believe, and it would allow Clamp to make it into something richer and more coherent better then always cutting it off at the 14-16 pages count, and give us the feeling an event is going on forever while it’s really not…

    The real question now is about the transfer from seinen to shounen…will that changes anything to Holic, or Clamp won’t care about the magazine or did they actually already negociate with the new mag. to do whatever they want with Holic? Because I don’t want them to leave Holic on hiatus in the future for reasons like ‘we couldn’t do what we wanted’ and such =___=

      Exactly. I always lost the grip when the arcs are cut in pieces like that.

      And I don’t think the genre or story or anything will change at all (other than page numbers xD). XXXHOLiC was never really appropriate for Young Magazine in the first place, it was already quite “unusual” for the magazine’s target, and I think CLAMP has enough power to control that. I don’t think they would change magazines if they had to alter significantly the genre or the way the story is told.

    • I think you’re so right about the impact of the increased page lengths. I’m excited because of that. Though the new length might kill me to translate.

      I’d agree with chibiyuuto, though, that the series won’t change; it only took buying Young Magazine once to see that HOLiC is completely unlike everything else in it. And I’d agree too that the move is at least partly to boost sales of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. Hopefully it will work.

  2. Cutesherry on clamp_now said that the first chapter in the new magazine would be chapter 205… But wasn’it announced three days ago (Clamp news) that chapter 205 would be published in Young Magazine ?
    Well, at least I think a monthly Holic can be good… Small weekly chapters can be frustrating.

    And well, let’s hope it gives Clamp some time for X…

      Yes, but I think it’s a mistake, or maybe they didn’t want to spoil the announcement from Young Magazine.

      XXXHOLiC’s schedule should be fixed in CLAMP-NET.COM within the next days or so.

  4. At first I didn’t like this, but now with some thought into it I guess it does mean better things for the story in the aspect of how much care goes into making each chapter and how long it is. Though like others said, my only worry is what it’ll do for the genera. Holic isn’t exactly Shounen, is it?

    • I’m looking forward to longer chapters as well. As far as changing the genre, I don’t think it’ll happen. XXXHOLiC was never a typical Young Magazine manga and it was still published in it for 7 years.

        And this is totally possibly running over me shipping Doumeki and Watanuki. Cuz, that’s not Shounen…but again, that leads back up to clamp probably getting to say whatever they want on the matter…no matter in what direction they send it. if Watanuki ends up with a girlfriend though I might shoot something

  6. Oh Chibi Yuuto, so much yes (with sparkles and all) for the cover thing. The Kino branch over here refused to carry Young Magazine because it meant it had to be displayed with Shounen Jump and kid’s weekly magazines, and that one cover with Random Girl #45 in A Bikini just… didn’t fit. On the other hand, it is a new magazine, so I don’t know about places carrying it outside of Japan, comparing to Young.

    I wouldn’t be that optimistic about the number of pages :p They could give us 16 or 45, monthly doesn’t always mean more.

  9. Hopefully CLAMP brings out more pages. 30+ or so. Quite frankly the weekly pacing with less than 20 pages doesn’t make for a good story.

    So how’s CLAMP’s track record anyway? Concerning monthly releases that is.

    If i’m not wrong, Rean no Tsubasa is not related to Gundam, is just an original concept from the same creator of Gundam, Yoshiyuki Tomino 🙂
    Rean no Tsubasa is more a spin-off of another mech-series, Dunbine.

      You’re right! I totally misread the text in CLAMP-NET, they were talking about the creator of Gundam, not that the series is related to Gundam.

    • But for Kobato’s case, the limitation in page numbers is set by Newtype. Since it’s an anime magazine, it can only have a few pages dedicated to manga. I think if CLAMP could, they would draw more pages.

      And you’re right about CLAMP not being very active, I’m sure they are planning something, those ladies never rest, not even when they are silent xD

Or maybe we can suspect that Clamp are pretty bussy working on other proyects (crossed finger for X, GD and Gate 7)

    • CLAMP have always been monthly before Chobits, so I think they must be feeling more comfortable now… hopefully they will start new projects or resume one of their unfinished works in their spare time.

I always associate shonen manga with upbeat, action-filled, mainstream storylines. xxxHolic has a much more seinen atmosphere. I hope they don’t change that quality.
