CLAMP in Japan Expo – Day 1

Second day of Japan Expo, first day of CLAMP activities.

Today there was a sign session and the CLAMP Cosplay contest. I left after the contest so I don’t know if there was a second sign session. I heard a rumor that it got canceled but I have to confirm that. The Cosplay Contest did end much later than planned so maybe it’s true. Anyone can confirm that?

The signing rooms at Japan Expo are in an open area, basically anyone can watch the artists doing the signs, even if they haven’t won any tickets, which is pretty cool.

I think the first session had around 50 to 100 people, and CLAMP greeted each one of them and the fans were able to talk to them and ask questions. If anyone here won a ticket or knows someone who has, and if they asked any questions, please let me know the question and answer! ^^

Unlike the signing sessions from the USA and Korea, CLAMP did not give a special signing board do sign on, you could bring anything for CLAMP to sign on.

They were very generous with the fans, Mokona took pictures from two girls with her cellphone camera because of the way they looked.

Later there was the CLAMP Cosplay contest where CLAMP were the judges. Each member chose a winner individually and CLAMP as a group chose another winner.

Satsuki Igarashi chose a CLOVER group with Suu, Kazuhiko and Oruha.
Mokona picked a Code Geass duo with Cornelia and Euphie.
Tsubaki Nekoi chose a Blck and White Mokona duo.
Nanase Ohkawa picked a Sakura Kinomoto.

CLAMP as a group chose a Card Captor Sakura duo made of a Sakura and a Syaoran. I really liked that duo, the performance was so funny and the music was great, it was one of my favorites.

The winners got CLAMP’s autographs and other official goodies such as clearfiles and shitajikis.

However, originally there should have been only one winner picked by CLAMP as a group, but there was a duo from Tsubasa made of a Syaoran and a Sakura that CLAMP liked so much, that they decided to give them a priwe too.

They promised to draw something to them and they also gave to them their Ioryogi plush toy that used to be in CLAMP’s studio and that Nekoi carried around everywhere in their events.

I have a few pictures and videos, but I’m not allowed to share them until monday but please look forward to them!

On other news, CLAMP was featured in today’s edition of the french newspaper Le parisien. They were interviewed in their hotel room just before leaving for the opening of their art exhibition that I mentioned yesterday. There’s a very cool nez picture of CLAMP members sitting on a bed.

  1. I can tell you that the second signing cession was not canceled, because that’s when I received my autograph! *still feels dizzy*
But the CLAMP were late, that’s right, so the staff told us not to ask to many questions. But the CLAMP themselves engaged in small talk with the fans, so it was very fun!
I’m currently writing my own report but what is it with “not [being] allowed to share them until monday”?

That’s a relief! then they could act in front of CLAMP after all. I’m really happy for them, after a lot of work, they made it!!! ^^ I’m going to congratulate them when they come back ^_~

Thank you for the news!!! ^^

      • SO YOU SAW US AT LEAST! ;__; When we were at the backstage, apart from being horribly nervous XD we were so hoping you could see us ^^ And I agree with you, was so handsome, and I’m not saying that only because I’m his girlfriend XDDD His cosplay, even though having a “seemingly” simple design, was full of detail and I really liked how he finished it :3

It was a shame we couldn’t meet, and also that our skit wasn’t as we planned it… we were two groups with four members each initially, but three of them got lost in Paris and had a ton of problems including lost luggage (and cosplays), one of them lost her flight (along with atrezzo, entrance tickets and wigs for other members) and the other got so depressed because of that that she couldn’t manage to go on stage, so we had to change almost everything and “rehearse” (if we can call that a rehearsal ^^u). Sorry about that T_T

        • I SAW YOU GUYS! It was a shame we couldn’t meet indeed, but after the contest I ran out of that hellish place LOL And the next day, I spent almost the entire day in front of the main hall, where CLAMP’s conference would be at, and I was all the time searching for your cosplays but I never saw you guys =/

I am so sorry to hear about your friends!! It sounds too much lack of luck at once!

I’m still glad for those of you who made it and managed to perform in front of CLAMP, I’m sure it must have been an unique experience ^^

And it was so cute at the end you were so shy and spanish XD

I’m thankful to this article. I needed to see some French before I started forgetting it ^.^ I’m really happy I understood almost all of it 😀

  3. Thank you for the report. I’m glad you had fun, and I can’t wait for the pictures and videos… I’m a bit sad I missed the JE this year, though.

I translated the article in english. It’s not a perfect translation, but it will help those that can’t read french to understand. (sorry for the poor grammar)
    Enjoy.

    Manga queens in Paris.

Sober skirt for the first one, traditional kimono for the second, classical dresses for the last two. Clamp’s four naiads, Japan’s queens of manga, contrast with every clichés. No pink hair nor gothic laces.
“That’s funny, in Japan, manga authors have a reputation for being cushy, and staying in their tracksuits all day long.”, they say for fun.
So here they are, for a few days in Paris, the Japan Expo guests of honor, the biggest manga exhibition in France, running until Sunday in Villepinte.
On their agenda : four signing sessions and an exhibition of original works at the Bibliothèques Gallery.

Their trip to Paris ? Ohkawa, the writer, and the three illustrators, Mokona, Nekoi and Igarashi, are very moved.
“It’s impressive. All those historical monuments are as they were back then, restored… In Japan, it wouldn’t exist.”
It must be said, they don’t leave their homeland quite often.
    Holidays ?
“We dream about it. But we never have breaks longer than a week.” Because of their work rate and their insolent talent. They are a big success and their mangas, X, Card Captor Sakura, XXXHolic, are top sales every weeks in Japan.
“We have to hand in seven to eight pages everyday, it’s a lot of work. In order to come to Paris, we had to be ahead on our work.

    French bread and macaroons
Because Clamp, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, will be treating themselves in Paris. After Japan Expo, they will have three days to laze around the city streets whose boys are “charming”.
“Guides often say that French people are arrogant. We only met lovely people”
Despite spending their “parisian holidays” together, the ladies don’t have exactly the same tastes (apart from french bread and macaroons). The three illustrators want to “see the paintings in the Louvre”, “have some Da Vinci Code atmosphere” , they also want to go by the Moulin Rouge. Ohkawa on the other hand, is a big fan of sparkling wine, she would have loved to go to some Champagne vineyards.
But she will have her revenge : “I’ll go around the sales”, she swears. To buy some sober skirts…

    • Thanks a lot for the french translation ^ v ^ Personally I can understand much more Japanese than French (looks like the only French I know is Bonjour = =)

It’s impressive. All those historical monuments are as they were back then, restored… In Japan, it wouldn’t exist.”
      >>>I love all those monuments in Europe too, LOVE them =3 But at least at Japan there are historical monuments, only they are Asian styled rather than Western styled. ^ 0 ^

“We have to hand in seven to eight pages everyday, it’s a lot of work. In order to come to Paris, we had to be ahead on our work.
      >>>Can anybody tell me WHY that there are so many BREAKS if they have worked ahead of the trip???WHY???

The three illustrators want to “see the paintings in the Louvre”, “have some Da Vinci Code atmosphere” , they also want to go by the Moulin Rouge.
      >>>I want to go there as well = V = France is such an attractive place to me…the only thing is it’s too far away

Ohkawa on the other hand, is a big fan of sparkling wine, she would have loved to go to some Champagne vineyards.
      >>>SOOOO Ohkawa-ish XD She would like to add them to the collection in their studio, right?

  6. Satsuki Igarashi chose a CLOVER group with Suu, Kazuhiko and Oruha.
    >>>I was under the impression that Ohkawa must be the most fond of CLOVER since it was her dream that made the story…But of course, cosplay is another thing ^ ^

Mokona picked a Code Geass duo with Cornelia and Euphie.
    >>>Mokona really likes Cornelia and Euphie *o* When she knew that Euphie had died, she drawed the illustration appeared in MUTUALITY artbook herself, not intending to publish it but then Ohkawa found it and use it to get money XD

Tsubaki Nekoi chose a Blck and White Mokona duo.
    >>>Nekoi likes Mokona so much..perhaps because she draws a lot of them? In an interview before, she said she likes Mokona (the characters) best…Wow but she even likes the cosplay…= v =

Nanase Ohkawa picked a Sakura Kinomoto.
    >>>Ohkawa sensei chose K.Sakura…because she has profit a lot from her???(Imagine a devil-look Ohkawa-sensei..hehe…so cute…Joking only!)

They promised to draw something to them and they also gave to them their Ioryogi plush toy that used to be in CLAMP’s studio and that Nekoi carried around everywhere in their events.
    >>>WOWOWOWW…Ioryogi plush toy of Nekoi-sensei??(With an envy look *.*) But they deserve it, I know =) Congratulations to all the winners!

  8. I am SO jealous…why didn’t they do that kind of stuff at Anime Expo 2006? TT_TT
(I saw that Ioryogi plush! For some reason I’m sad that they gave it away to fans lol)
I’m especially sad that you get to take pictures and video when we weren’t. I wonder why the more relaxed security? (Even if you won a signature, you really didn’t get to talk to them…it almost seemed like the security guards would shoot you if you did lol)

Hopefully they’ll come to N.America again someday so that we too may benefit from relaxed security ^_^
In the meantime, I’m so happy for you and everyone else who get to see them! The videos and photos are great!

  9. Yeah the second friday session wasn’t cancelled they were late because they were judging the clamp cosplay contest. One of the tickets we won with my friends was for this session, but we figured since the clamp were in front of us looking at the cosplayers, no need to rush to go to the signing room. Can’t be late if the star of the show is too, no? So we enjoyed the clamp cosplay very muchh.
