Mangettes: Gate 7

Amazon Canada is now listing the upcoming new CLAMP manga, Mangettes: Gate 7, and along with it, we have the first official details from the story!

Between our conscious, waking world and the subconscious state of slumber, there is a thinly veiled plane of lucid dreaming. While the conscious state belongs to individuals, the hidden plane of dreams is one shared by all human minds, past, present, and future. Yet only a few have ever possessed the power to enter this secret realm at will – where a war is being waged to control the waking world. For our earthly wishes and desires are not our own, but under the manipulation of these unseen masters of dreams. The heroine of Gate 7 is Hana, a high-school girl hailing from Kyoto, the daughter of a temple caretaker. Her peaceful ways give her the self-control to act in the hidden realm. But Hana can only reach it through the strange beast that acts as her totem in the world of dreams – and her companion on a journey to confront the puppeteers of our reality!

Amazon Canada gives a release date too, Mangettes: Gate 7 is slated for August 15, 2009.

Source: Kuriousity. And thanks a lot to everyone who let me know about it! Love you guys ♥

As for the plot, it sounds so interesting and promising! CLAMP handles really well dream sequences (see X), I’m eagerly looking forward to see their surrealism again. The plot reminded me a lot of their one-chapter-long Yumegari novel: high-school girl who can enter inside dreams. Pieces of it also reminded me of Matrix (the part where the dream world control the waking world). Very very interesting.

As for the title, Gate 7, mysterious at the very least. Is it a gate that leads access to the dream world? Or a gate the heroine will have to pass through at some point? And of course the number 7 had to be there, out of all numbers xD It’s too soon for speculations, I better stop xD

More information as they come!

Now i’m just curious who’s gonna be the lead artist for this manga. My bet is Mokona since her art style seems to match this kind of story~ but we’ll see :3

This…doesn’t sound like shoujo at all xDD

      Me too!!!

My bet is Mokona too, not only because her style suits this story, but also because I think she has more “breath” for drawing 80 pages a month.

      >This…doesn’t sound like shoujo at all xDD

You think? I think it does xD

  3. I was thinking of Yumegari when I read the summary as well. It’s not the first time Clamp delve into the theme of dreams and the idea of being able to enter dreams (and possibly manipulating it), but I know Clamp will never cease to amaze us with various twists and turns.

Speaking of which, I wonder if there’ll be any minor crossover with other Clamp series, or if this series will be a complete standalone.

    • Ohkawa is a master of dreams herself. She loves dreams, she has them every day. I’m looking forward to all the prettiness that the dream sequences will be!

I wonder that too! Being CLAMP, possibly there will be a few small or big crossovers. I hope we’ll see Yumeragi characters, why not? ^^

  4. Lulu told me about this some hours ago, it’s incredible news *_* many months before the official release O_o

Plot is very original for CLAMP (I sense some kind of futuristic environment, don’t know) as they have used many times dreams and “world of dreams” but it’s first time plot is developed in THAT WORLD and not in a physical world (except Yumegari, as you said).

Now we have to wait ’till Summer 09 *_*

The Dark Horse people did say that we would hear more info about in December ^^ Since this plot summary came from an unofficial source, I am expecting a formal press release from Dark Horse, maybe with even a promo pic ^^

      >I sense some kind of futuristic environment, don’t know

Me too (Matix? XD) The Dream World must be completely different from the Waking World.

      >but it’s first time plot is developed in THAT WORLD and not in a physical world (except Yumegari, as you said).

But I think it’s going to be half/half. Half Waking World, half Dream World. Even Yumegari partially took place in the real world and partially in the dream world. But it does feel like in this new manga, the dream world will get much more attention ^^

  5. I think CLAMP is preparing for it for a long time

I think CLAMP is preparing for it for a long time infact i think that is the reason why clamp had a mistake in the orientation in tsubasa..

perhaps clamp are already doing gate-7 for a long time before it’s actually published.

They are definitely planning for a long time.

For one, this story could be hidden in Ohkawa’s drawer for years.

For two, they are planning it since July 2007, because that’s when the Mangettes announcement was made.

However, I don’t think that they have started drawing just yet. I think they’ll start doing it next year.

  7. Sounds epic! The first thing I thought was ‘a Yumegari continuation?!’ XD Perhaps now that they’ve had more experience, CLAMP are going to explore the idea a bit more.

I guess that means Tsubasa and xxxHOLiC will be finished very soon as well!

    • I think it’s very similar to Yumegari, and maybe we might even see some crossovers with it. Maybe it takes place in the same universe.

That’s great because I always wanted more Yumegari ^^

      Definitely ^^

  8. Ahaha. She’s warped dreams, consciousness, and prophetic vision so it’s only right that Ohkawa would eventually want to manipulate the definition of liminality too~~

Very interested, thanks for the info ♥

      • Well… CG is a bit unclear about it (no idea if it’s due to translations or just CG) but it was a world of collective coscience where were stored the memories of every living and dead being. Only some beings were capable to enter in it on their own (the Code bearer), the others needed their help (they also build some sort of machine to get in but it was destroyed). Who can enter in it can talk with the dead and get their knowledge. Actually in CG there’s a code bearer who plan to destroy the world of C because ‘this would stop people from lying and hiding between masks’ and would allow living to connect with the dead. It’s more comp than this but, since it isn’t clearly explained I’m not sure how to explain it better. Somehow the whole World of C thing was dealt a bit too quickly in the end… (rumors said that in season 1 they had been forced to cut two episodes who might have been related to it and that the change of the time of transmission time (season 1 was transmitted at a later hour) forced the authors to make changes in season 2 that hadn’t been planned…)

  10. August 15… that would be one day after my birthday XD

Gates 7 sounds like an interesting title, and to think that the title is released so early!

I’m looking forward to the crossovers And the name for the heroine “Hana”, I think it’s only suitable for our line of flower names XD

Who thinks her birthday will be Arpil 1st? XD

    Thanks for the news~

Indeed it sounds! However, given that we had the announcement a year and a half ago, I think it’s only right to have the title now. Even if we’re 8 months away from it XDDD

      >And the name for the heroine “Hana”, I think it’s only suitable for our line of flower names XD

I noticed it ! Hana! Like Kobato “Hana”to, and like Sakura as well. Looking so much forward to the first pics *excited!!*

I can’t help but wonder what kind of character “Hana” will be. I forsee a lot of Sakura trees at the temple… And I imagine Yuuko would have a role in this story as well 😀

I’m really looking forward to the first pics as well! I wonder when they’ll be released~

        • Somehow I don’t think she will look too adorably cute like Kobato and Sakura. In spite of having such a name, I think she’ll have a similar look of Arashi or even Yumegari’s Tatsumi. I think she’ll have dark hair.

And we know there are two main characters, probably her pair.

Hmmm, I don’t know, a lot of CLAMP characters live up to their names. Like Doumeki Shizuka, Syaoran and Himawari but then again there are those who don’t. I kind of imagined her to look a bit like Zashiki Warashi.

The thing I’m anticipating the most about this new series is the art style t hat CLAMP would use. Very curious about that.

Yes, that’s true. It could be a false name, though XDDDDDDDDD

Seriously, now xD I guess you are right, “Hana” doesn’t suit someone like Arashi/Tatsumi. She sounds lovable due to her name.

  11. 😮 Wow. I totally didn’t think of the Matrix… My first thought was: “The collective unconscious? Is Clamp going all Carl Jung now?”

The real question is… Does this make me nerdier or less nerdier than those of you who thought of the Matrix first? XD Course, it may just be my intense dislike of that movie.

  13. Well, they got me!

You probably remember that THIS is the kind of story I always wanted them to write!! CLAMP FINALLY WRITING SOME GOOD OCCULT STUFF AGAIN! I missed those since Gohou Drug and, specially, Tokyo Babylon.

That “dream dimension” where all people meet and where past, present and future merge is often called “Akasha” in occult literature. Matrix is a direct comparison, but you could also see a lot of Neil Gaiman´s “Sandman” (American Comics are good sometimes) is often mentioned in lots of occult works, and I think the best recent example is Madame Blavatsky.

If that kind of topic interests anyone, also check SANDMAN.

    See ya

Occult? Don’t tell me that Code Geass is occult! The idea that CLAMP is going to go into this is awesome! I was reading through my copy of MUTUALITY: CLAMP Works in Code Geass, and was reading a conversation between MOKONA and Goro Taniguchi, (Japanese version, I don’t know if the English copy has the conversation), and it got so interesting when they got to talk about the storyline regarding the events in Akasha.
