XXXHOLiC◆Kei #10 Review

The end of Kohane’s arc. It amazes me that this episode was aired just about the same time of the end of Kohane’s arc in the manga, I think that’s the sort of thing we can expect when Ohkawa is part of the staff.

There were a few plot tweaks and changes here and there, like Watanuki giving the dream balloon and that turning out to be Kohane’s salvation or so to speak. It felt a little vain how everything was unfolded, we had more of Kohane’s backstory in the manga, like the reason her mother is the way she is being related to Kohane’s father.

It was nice to see that in spite of everything her mother has done for her, Kohane still loves her. She knows that she’s been driven completely by the fame and luxury that Kohane’s powers brought to her, and even though Kohane was happy and having fun in Yuuko’s store, she knew she didn’t belong there.

It caught my attention when Kohane said the murderer of that woman in the house was someone she really cared about, that’s so CLAMP XD I wonder if it was Seishirou…

So Kohane makes a wish, the Yumekai balloon fulfills it, she cuts her hair as a physical way of expressing she’s beginning a new chapter of her life, and walks away happily with her mother =) Happy ending for Kohane-chan. She deserved it.

The animation was a little off, which has became a constant for the latest episodes. Where the good animation of the first episodes has gone?

Next episode is the beginning of Himawari’s arc, long awaited arc by me and possibly many people too. And good news, it was written by Ohkawa!

Speaking of Ohkawa, she posted in her Private Board that lately she’s been listening a lot to a song called Odore (Dance), by singer Micro, while she works in Tsubasa and XXXHOLiC. Give it listen YouTube. It is also the theme song of the japanese drama series Osen.

Pretty uplifting song, I love to know which songs they are listening to while working =)

  1. I stopped watching this ‘Holic season around episode 4 ’cause I got lazy. XD;; But I’m definitely watching Himawari’s arc!

Annnd I’m going to have to check out that song. 😉 Even if I don’t like it, it’s going straight to my iPod anyway. XD I’ll probably listen to it everytime I read a ‘Holic/Tsubasa chapter!

    • You didn’t miss much, honestly. Seems like after episode 4 the series became less and less interesting. I hope the ending will be good.

It’s a pretty crazy song, I mean, for a Tsubasa/XXXHOLiC soundtrack, that is xD

  2. ooooh i know that song :DD I’ve been watching Osen drama too. The main girl in that series is a lot like Yuuko how she always wants to drink beer and sake ^^
I wonder if Ohkawa-san watchs it too.

    Himawari’s arc!! I’ve been waiting!

  3. I wonder if she listens to Def Tech, or did. Ha ha.

Unfortunately, I don’t like Odore. It sounds too messy.

I haven’t been too much of a Micro fan since Def Tech broke up, really…

    • You wondered right ^_~ She did mention Def Tech:

Def Techの時もかっこよかったけど、この曲は更に。 (something like “since Def Tech’s time he was already cool, this song is cool as well”)

      >Unfortunately, I don’t like Odore. It sounds too messy.

It didn’t catch my attention either =/

  4. This episode seemed so anticlimactic and predictable… I liked Kohane and was hoping for something a little more dramatic I guess. Oh well, that’s what I get for not reading the manga =p

I felt like the season started off really strong but it’s become more and more obvious that they’re cutting out Tsubasa stuff.

I’m sad there are only 13 episodes in this season, and I really hope the last 3 are good…

    • Word on anticlimatic and predictable. I knew she would have a happy ending, that sort of happy ending, the moment the episode began.

      >I’m sad there are only 13 episodes in this season, and I really hope the last 3 are good…

There’s nothing else we can do but to hope =/

  5. It’s a catchy song, but the bit when the tune changes halfway through is a bit awkward. Thanks for the link though. Perhaps it says something about the upcoming chapters! 😉

  6. Oh gods, I’m so behind on xxxHolic TV Series… actually I’m behind on the few anime shows I picked up this season. I’m glad they cut the Kohane arc short in the anime, I probably wouldn’t be able to stand such a long story that’s pretty much ado about nothing.

Hmm… the Odore song didn’t do much for me though.

Thanks for the review. Now that I know the Kohane part ends swiftly I’ll bring myself to watch the show again faster.

    • Now it’s time to catch up, since in 3 episodes it’ll be over ^_~

      >Hmm… the Odore song didn’t do much for me though.

Same here xD I actually thought it was a pretty odd choice (to write Tsubasa/XXXHOLiC). Sometimes Ohkawa’s tastes amazes me (in both good and bad ways xD).

      • xxxHolic will only have 13 episodes?!!?

The downside towards having an eclectic taste is that it’s so broad that you tend to hate some of it.

          Yes =)

Indeed. Her taste varies greatly between Britney Spears and other pop divas to Nine Inch Nails xD

  7. I kind of liked how it ended because it’s kind of too hard to follow the original story without Tsubasa crossover.

I didn’t like Odore, because the speed is not consistent…

I listened to one of the Def Tech’s CDs before from the library and it was so cool.

  8. A third episode in a row with below average drawings and animations, I hope the last three will make up for that. ¬_¬

They change a lot of things there, Kohane staying overnight at Yuuko’s shop, her mother backstory left untold and the final TV show not used at all. I suppose they had to cramp Kohane’s final into no more than 2 episodes so they had to change the story quite a bit.

    >It caught my attention when Kohane said the murderer of that woman in the house was someone she really cared about, that’s so CLAMP XD I wonder if it was Seishirou…

Ohkawa is toying with us on this one (although I’m sure it’s Sakurazuka Setsuka XD).

    • >although I’m sure it’s Sakurazuka Setsuka XD

At first I thought so too xD But she had short hair, and she wore such average clothes too.

The woman in the Sakura tree, however, could well be Setsuka xD

      • >But she had short hair, and she wore such average clothes too.

        Er… I though they were still talking about the woman in the cherry tree, but you’re right they were talking about the one in the house. That’s what I get for watching too much anime in a too hot afternoon… ^^;

It most be cold in your side of the world, still willing to switch house. XD

  9. It was an interesting ep, I’ve been reading the scanlations and i watched the last two eps with a friend whose buying the manga and refuses to read scans for that reason….which lead to me going o.o that’s not like the manga! and her getting spoilers…much to her dislike. But yes, I agree that it made me O.o eh? when i noticed that both of the version’s of Kohane’s arc ended at the same time.

Here’s hoping for a good Himawari arc interpretation in the anime.

and Kohane looks cute with short hair.

  10. 0.o The Odore Song is indeed messy…. -.-”

In case someone want to download the mp3, I run across a link in mediafire. It’s not mine, but I’m grateful to whoever upload it.

It’s not that way in the manga isn’t it? Or did I miss a chapter? The last time I see, it’s still Kohane spelling her wish to Yuko-san….

  11. This episode confused the crap out of me. I just sat there thinking WTF throughout the whole thing. I have no idea what they are/were trying to do with it. Then again I don’t get what CLAMP is doing in a lot of things right now.
I did like the different twist a bit. Sometimes it’s fun to see how an arc could be different and the like. Kohane actually looks cute with the short hair.
The animation is not up to par, which we all agree on. I didn’t like the change in Kohane’s arc because I really like her arcs in the manga (I also really like Kohane, one of the few people who do I think). That’s what is exciting about anime is that I get to see manga in action basically. It’s annoying ’cause I have such mixed feelings about this episode.

  12. Thanks for the review, good and interesting as always
I’ve just watched this episode.. It was…just good… A nice twist in the story, maybe I’d like it better if I didn’t knew the manga ending, thst’s much better. And Kohane cutting her hair, nice look, it remind me to the twins arc in the previous season…
