CLAMP IN WONDERLAND 2 News – Storyboard by CLAMP


x_reggg-san took pictures of her copy of CLAMP Newtype PASTEL, in which included the first official pictures of the CLAMP IN WONDERLAND 2 music video. I asked for her permission to re-post them here (thank you very much, reg-san ^^).

I confess that my first impression was “This looks UGLY!”, I was expecting way more than that. I don’t know what in it makes me feel that way, but it is a bit weird, isn’t it? Kobato is looking a bit dull, Watanuki’s eyes are brown when it should be blue… Yuuko’s eyes are weird as well (just the eyes, though). I also thought the way they colored looks too artificial to me, kinda plastic, I don’t know XD I really don’t like anime pics, maybe that’s the reason.

Not everything is bad, though, the Gouhou Drugs guys are very good, they were the ones I liked the most, specially Kazahaya ^__^

These are like, the paper sheets containing the animation drawings, it’s a step ahead of the storyboard, since the drawings are more detailed. Basically, it’s pretty much how the actual clip will look like.

In opposition to the colored pic, I really liked the drawings, they look really nice.

In the top left frame, we can see Hikaru fighting a giant Mokona xD

Beside, there’s Yuuko, Maru, Moro and Watanuki on what appears to be Yuuko’s yard, conjuring something since we can see her magic symbol on the ground.

More to the left, we see a shot of the Green Drugstore, with Rikuou and a very surprised Kazahaya as he sees the two Mokonas jumping across the drugstore.

Underneath, on the left, there’s a shot of Kazuhiko and Suu looking up. On the right, Hikaru, Umi and Fuu with their mashin.

Bellow, there’s Sakura of CCS with her primary staff, getting surprised as well with the two Mokonas.

Bellow, we can see Syaoran and Sakura from TRC, flying above a dragon (I think). Their clothes look pretty cool !

Bellow, all we can see is what appears to be a leg of a mashin? Or Hikaru’s leg (Angelic Layer).

Beside, on the left, the mechanical birds of CLOVER. Real nice.

On the left, I couldn’t recognize anything xD

Above, really cool shot of Suu showing her wings. Looks good. Beside it, on the left, there’s two frames, one with the title “CLAMP IN WONDERLAND 2″ (will be probably shown at the beginning, just like the first one) and another with what seems to be butterflies? Or any other flying creature.

Above, a very simple shot of Kamui. I liked the shoulders, similar to CLAMP’s latest style.

Above and on the center, Kobato with her umbrella and Ioryogi. I also really liked this shot, the style looks really good.

A new and excellent information was announced in the article, it says CLAMP did the storyboard for it, just like they did (actually, Mokona) for the first one ! They said they had to cut a lot of things otherwise the number of characters would be bigger than 100 ^^”

I couldn’t be happier with this news, because only CLAMP know how to merge one series with another perfectly, and I just love when they get involved with their anime. Now I just hope we’ll soon find out that Ohkawa wrote the lyrics for the songs, too.

Now that we’ve seen the scans, we can understand why the person from which I found the source for my previous post said that only those series would be on the video. However, I don’t think it means Chobits and the others are really out. Better, maybe they are really out, but we still shouldn’t consider it as a real fact. Maybe the layout of the pic, the way it’s structured, unfortunately ended up letting out those series. These are the “confirmed” ones, but maybe there will be more later.

    Really cute! It’s going to be wonderful to see them animated. Especially stuff that hasn’t been made into an anime, like Clover [well, there’s the music video, but please] and Gouhou Drug.

    Kobato & company do look a bit weird, but maybe it’ll be better in the actual video. We’ll see.

      I did, I’m sorry !!! Why, I shouldn’t have done it? ;___; I resized them to fit into the screen and I didn’t want scroll-bars to show up, so I cropped a little so that the real image wouldn’t be so affected by the resize. I’m sorry .__.

  9. I think the pictures looks great 🙂
    I was kinda expecting to see more CCS, but in the end, there was only this little super tiny pic of Sakura…*no CCS Syaoran? and Tomoyo-chan?* but all the other animes/mangas look awesome ^__^ It would sure be super funny if the TsubasaRC part ended up better drawn and animated then the TV anime by Bee Train (which would not be that surprising…) As for Kobato…she looks totally kawaii but she sure takes a lot of place for such a new serie that *still* hasn’t proven it’s worth since we saw so few chapters…(hey! Don’t go mistaken me! I LOVE Kobato!)

    • I think/hope there will be more of CCS charas on the actual clip ^^ I’m at least expecting Syaoran and Tomoyo for sure. And if we are lucky enough, Touya and Yukito, too? ^^

      I TOTALLY and COMPLETELY know what you mean XDDDDDDDDD She’s the highlight on the colored page, and her sketch is the biggest one ! I wonder if it’s only because the magazine is Newtype or if the music-clip will really feature a lot of Kobato.

    Those are a lot of characters!!!!!!!!
    I have to disagree with you this time xD I liked the way Kobato is drawed… But that’s the only thing I disagree with. Yuuko looks weird (well, her eyes)…. and the Mokonas too…. O.o And… they do look like plastic…. O.o (or perhaps it is so because of the photo?…. I hope so)
    You forgot to mention Yue above Kamui!!!! ^^
    How cool Mokona is in charge of the storyboard!
    I also wish Ohkawa did the lyrics for the songs ^___^

        • Mokona is the one who usually does the storyboards. She was the one credited for the Wish Gift Box video Opening, the last Magic Knight Rayearth Opening and Ending, the first Clamp in Wonderland Opening … is there any other? Mick only did the first Clamp in Wonderland ending.

    Argh, CLAMP, why couldn’t you have taken more of an interest in your animated shows? They all should have been as good as CCS, but no…. I’d rage out if one of my stories was animated, butchered and rapped to mediocrity. (*coughtsubasacough*)

      Whenever there’s MADHOUSE + CLAMP together (I mean, the actual members on the staff), only good stuff can come out of it ^^ CCS was really the best CLAMP anime ever.

        • I mean, as long as they have the money to pay them, who in their right mind wouldn’t invite Clamp to work on the animation? Or maybe that’s it, they are insain dominator that need to control everything and couldn’t bear to have the author of the original work to critic their work! o.O

          Or worst, they actually believe they can do better without them! o.O

          I hope not … let me believe in a world where no such people exist … *sit on the floor, rocking back and forth*

          • I don’t know, but I’ve seen somewhere (I don’t remember where @_@) Ohkawa saying something around these lines, about some anime of theirs: “I’ve been invited to do this and that”, I mean, nobody does nothing for free, there is money involved, but I really wonder if it’s really that.

            Having their OWN staff (hiring their own people) would glorify the studio’s name, don’t you think? I think that’s the vision of some studio XD

              That’s if the anime is good, else their name will be stained. ^_^

              But that pretty much depends on the director’s mood, I suppose. In example, Bones worked quite closely with Arakawa for fullmetal alchemist, but very little with Clamp for Angelic Layer … not that Angelic Layer is in the same league as Card Captor Sakura or Magic Knight Rayearth.

              But what really puzzle me is Clamp always had worked on the Kodansha TV series anime, they worked on Magic Knight Rayearth, Card Captor Sakura, Chobits and Holic, only Tsubasa is let alone …

              Or maybe it’s because Tsubasa is a shounen and shounen anime tend to be crappy, whatever publisher market their magazine …

                Indeed feels like there’s this factor in common. Maybe Kodansha’s editors contribute more for CLAMP’s involvement (you know, they have a very important participation on the anime adaptation too).

                Or maybe it’s all just a big coincidence XDD I mean, their biggest Kadokawa series is X with 18.5 volumes, after that, AL with only 5 volumes. And with the exception of those 2, the other Kadokawa series aren’t really TV-appropriated (at least I think). We all know why CLAMP did not work on X’s anime, and I think it was for the same reason why they didn’t work on AL too, since theyran one after the other.
                It’s a good point, but maybe just coincidence. I know they aren’t TV series, but CLAMP worked on X’s movie and Miyuki-chan’s OVA, so hopefully publishers don’t affect muchly.

                • There was an interview in which they said they couldn’t work on Chobits’s anime much because Chobits’s manga was taking too much time, so the same should be true for Angelic Lager and X. The same could be said about CCS, while working on both the manga and the anime, they didn’t had much time to get involved in other animation project, too bad for Clover, both the anime and manga.

                  In fact, through Clamp history, they rarely work on two animation projects at the same time and when they do, one is a light project. I guess they couldn’t work on both Tsaubasa’s and Holic’s anime at the same time, so it was one or the other. Why Holic rather than Tsubasa? Well, Holic is better anyway so it would be more fun to work on it (ok, personal bias here ^^;).

  13. It’ll probably look better animated. Hopefully they fix the eye color, they did get it right for the most part in the first one (but they did get it wrong in X-TV >_>). Still though, Gouhou Drug and Kobato animated is something to be quite happy about. ♥

    • The director of the X series said they changed the eye color on purpose, to mark it as their X version since it was their original ending (Clamp let them pretty free to do what they want, Chobits, both the anime and manga was taking too much energy and time -_- ).

          • Or Seishirou saying “Boku wa, anata wo …” instead of “boku wa, kimi wo”. I hate them so much for ruinning the scene! >_<

            I was in the interview of the DVD series I think, on the OVA one in Japanese and on the second DVD of the series for the American version.

            • I hate to drag this up almost three years too late. Ha ha. What Google pulls up for you!

              Changing “boku wa kimi wo” to “boku wa anata wo” is highly significant, and though it may have ruined CLAMP’s intentions for the scene, it goes one step further and suggests that Seishirou definitely finished his sentence off with “aishiteru.” Anata is a word you just don’t throw around.

                Out of context, it could have suggested love feelings, but within context, it doesn’t. Seishirou have been using keigo since X, he’s using “anata” and -masu verb form all the time with anyone and everyone. So do Fuuma and Kakyou, among others.

                Just within book 16, Seishirou and Subaru used “anata” 18 times to call each other, Kakyou used “anata” twice talking to Hinoto, Seishirou and Hokuto are calling each other anata as well. “Anata” is quite common in X series.

                With “Boku wa, kimi wo…”, Seishirou revert back to his Tokyo Babylon way of speech.
                Even Kakyou call Hokuto “kimi” while he use “anata” with everyone else.

    • I do think in the future, when GD has enough volumes, there will be an anime. It’s a long series, I don’t see why it shouldn’t get at least an OVA.

        O problema do Watanuki são os olhos mesmo mas não achei que está ruim. Achei mais proporcional ao mangá. A Yuuko é a mesma coisa… Eu achava estranho no anime mas acabei me acostumando…
        Achei a Kobato bonitinha ^^'
        Eu tb pego um pouco no pé de character design dos animes… Não gostei qdo mudaram a cor dos olhos do Kamui em X mas no final, acabei me acostumando novamente… Pena que Chobits foi descartado u.u

  18. WOW, Kobato looks much better than the way i was expecting…
    the colored pic is regular, but the drawings are awesome and the fact that CLAMP made the storyboard made me feel very very happy.
    I just have to pray to the CLAMP-god to include Chobits in the clip XD

  19. Maybe colours are little to plastic, but it’s not too bad 🙂 Guys from Gohou drug are so handsome *___* I can’t wait to see this animation. It will be weirdy to see all of them in one video XD
    Mokona could involve more than 100 characters – I wouldn’t mind XD Although video would be bigger than last one – much bigggger XD But I wouldn’t mind a movie rather than video. 😉

  21. Kobato looks really odd in that image XD Biut apart of the face and the hair, the dress is very well done!

    The paper sheets look very good! The Tsubasa one’s is so cool *____* (and Suu is pretty too!)

      WORD ! WORD ! I think the same thing ^^ Her eyes are supposed to be prettier too (it has this gradient effect which I don’t really like XDDDD). The dress is really AMAZING.

XD WAHHHH, *dies* I have to disagree with you XD, but I liked too much the way kobato is drawn XD, I felt so happy seeing her, I didn’t like the way the colors look on all the characters, because well anime promotional pictures tend to look plastic…and not vivid, but I guess in the animation the colors will be awsome X3 it’s madhouse! they’ll do great! the GD guys look awsome, I dunno why watanuki’s eyes are brown XD but he looks good, and yuuko’s eyes are weird XD but both watanuki and yuuko still remind of the manga version and the I.G anime version as well X3. And the paper sheets with the drawing! wahhh!! XD awsome awsome, the drawings are quite nice X3 I just hope we’ll see more ccs characters XD more clover characters, fye and kurogane XD and wahh, but well, this was just a picture @_@ it’s not the whole thing XD! I have faith! XD! THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH, I’m really waiting for more news of this, THANK YOU *bows*

    That was my first impression Too! xD. Kobato looks as a little, little girl, I dislike a bit the colors >__ eyes. And anyone can draw Yuuko better than I.G. productions xDD.

    But Kazahaya and Rikuo look pretty good.

    The sketch looks awesome *__*, I can’t wait ^^.

  24. I’m pretty satisfied with the first page. Sure, the light and shadowing have a weird 3D like effect, but that’s the kind of things you see on the Newtype pictures that aren’t in the actual anime. The X series Newtype picture had that kind of weird effect. I like the thick outline around the groups.

    They all are a bit off, but not that much compare to other animations. They are fairly detailed, I hope the quality of the actual animation will be up to this (though they rarely do).

    For the second page, I so glad to see the Tsubasa sketch, they are wearing the same cloth as the December page of the 2005 calendar! I like the way Suu looks! And the Magic Knights too!

    So, it seems like Yuuko will send both Mokona on a trip (they even have their backpack from the picture book on the xxxholic scene!).

    Nicely, these animation drawings are from Madhouse, so it’s possible to safely link the information written on them with storyboards from older animation. On Clover’s storyboard, there is 1 scene separated into 58 cuts. Cut is refered by “C.”, so the “C. 15” on the Kobato drawing in the middle of the pages would mean it will be the 15th cut of the scene.

    If we suppose Clamp in Wonderland 2 is also 1 scene long, the scene line up of the animation drawings we can see the numbers on should go like this:

    1 Clamp in Wonderland 2
    9 Yuuko, Maru, Moro, Domeki, Watanuki, mokona and mokona, around Yuuko’s magic sigil (it seems Himawari is out of CiW2)
    15 Kobato holding Ioryogi
    42 Suu
    42 mecha-birds
    47 Suu and Kazuhiko watch the two mokona
    58 Sakura meet the two mokona
    67 Tsubasa – Syaoran and Sakura on a dragon

    There’s two drawings for the cut #42, it’s likely because there’s a panning in this cut from the bird to Suu or something like that.

    There’s a lot of room between Kobato and Clover and we don’t know how much cut there will be in total, so there’s room enough for another series or two to be in. Especially if there are 1 cut series scenes, like in the first one, for Shin shunkaden and Shirahime shou.

    That’s about it, I’m very please with this, I’m loking forward to get the DVD! ^_^

      So that’s from where the dragon comes from !!! That pic is so gorgeous, I’m glad it was chosen for the video (No wonder Mokona really did the storyboard, since she used the exact same pic for the “for-fun” 2nd OP storyboard as well ^^).

      Ohhhh, thank you so much for the scoop ! Really interesting all the Cuts and Scenes numbers ^___^ Now we know the order of the events ! I assume GD and AL must be inside this big gap between Kobato and Clover ^^

      So the very first scene is the title? I thought we would have some small introduction like the first one ^^ And so far the video is bigger in Cuts than Clover’s one, yay XD Hopefully there’s a bit more after Tsubasa’s Cut.

        That’s just assumptions of mine, since we see at least one of the mokona in almost all of the other works scene so far, I assume we’ll follow them traveling around. But there’s no official confirmation of it yet.

        I though so too, but it’s “C. 1”, with no number of scene, it’s pretty likely to be the first cut. I may be wrong though, wait and see!

        And so far the video is bigger in Cuts than Clover’s one, yay XD Hopefully there’s a bit more after Tsubasa’s Cut.

        I hope so too! Mokona’s storyboards are fast paced and Clover was a slow paced one, except for the part with the fary park. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s up to 100 cut in Clamp in Wonderland instead of the 58 in Clover.

          Now that I have your great scans, I can see whoever drew those sheets wrote the word “manga” and “hon” on XXXHOLiC’s sheet. Maybe they’ll travell inside CLAMP’s own mangas? XD

          • There’s a arrow leading from the “manga hon” circle to an open book in front of Yuuko, I suppose Yuuko will send them in that book where they will travel from story to story.

    The amazing Clamp character colour changing eyes appear yet again! Seriously though, I hope this is just the animators getting the colouring wrong as it allways bugs me when characters eyes just SUDDENLY change colour!

    That aside the scetches look ammazing and though, as you yourself said, the cell looks a little wrong I’m still hopefull that this project is going to turn out well!

    After seeing this preview, I’m sure that the animation video will be awesome!! I can’t wait to see it! Demo, I still hoping to see Yukito Tsukishiro for Cardcaptor Sakura sequence.

    Ok…your perceptive abilities amuse me a lot… I would have never noticed Hikaru´s leg there O.O, but you are so right, amazing o.oU
    In the coloured pic, yes anime pics are not that nice but oh well, I think they tryed to make Kobato look good, but they just spoiled it a little bit with the hair colouring (the shadow colour in the hair is way to dark in my opinion), and please dont hit me but I dont mind that much Wata´s eyes as I do mind Yuuko´s (she is in drugs like TRC-133-splash-page´s sakura! xDDDDD). BUT, If I have to point out one thing I really don´t like, that is that stone-rock-ish texture on Yuuko´s outfite, c´mon you are proffesional you can do better than that…, Am I being to hard? what do you think, you colour great (I still remember taht Chitose pic *__*) they could do it better right? or Am just I too bitchy? XDD

      Hahahaha I really checked that image inch by inch XDDDD In the end it was really Hikaru’s leg o.o

      You know, right NOW, Kobato grew on me. I agree with you that the hair shading is too dark, and her face should look a bit more fluffy and adorable than that, but yeah, maybe we are asking too much XD

      As for the stone in Yuuko’s torso (XDDD), yeah, I was a bit taken aback by that too XDDDDD But I’m not that bugged xD I don’t like those clothes very much (there are better pieces in her wardrobe).

  29. I’ve got to admit, the Kohou Drug guys look brilliant, but the rest of it seems to be of a pretty poor quality. The sketch sheets look stunning, well upto CLAMP’s usual level, but the rest of it just seems very sub par.
